Abstract

In the arena of academic discourse, there is a kind of ‘dissatisfaction’ over the indicators of sustainability. Although Indonesia has formally adopted its sustainable development indicators from the United Nations, the research to find compatible indicators for certain contexts still to continues. There are hundreds and/or even thousands of reports tell us the new indicators of sustainability with various methods and approaches. But very few are paying attention to – or at least – building sustainability indicators of suburban areas, especially the metropolitan suburbs of Jakarta. Therefore, this study tried to develop a typical suburban sustainability indicator called the Suburban Sustainability Index (SSI). As an empirical case, we observe four suburbs which located in hinterland of Metropolitan Jakarta: South Tangerang City, Tangerang City, Depok, and Bekasi. Based on the three dimensions of sustainability (social, economic, and environment), we developed 30 indicators and tested them with Min-Max analysis. More than that, we also conduct Index Analysis to assess the sustainability status of the four suburbs. We found that three regions were less sustainable, and one region was quite sustainable. Further elaboration on these findings is presented in this article.

Abstract

Access to clean water and electricity is one of the sustainable development agendas being addressed worldwide. However, people living on small islands scattered throughout Indonesia still face difficulties in accessing clean water and electricity. In an effort to overcome this problem, the Indonesian government and other donors are building small-scale clean-water infrastructure in a number of these small islands. Other infrastructure, such as electricity supply, has also been developed in a number of places. The infrastructure framework for these works is directed toward community-based management efforts. However, various problems have emerged after the construction of these facilities. Instead of achieving increased community participation in their management, the opposite occurs. This article investigates this situation using a rapid survey of communities in Bintan Island and Kapo-Kapo Island in the Mandeh Waters area, and finds that the development of small-scale infrastructure has a different impact on the two regions observed. An elaboration of various field findings is presented in detail in this article.

Abstract

Conceptually, there are many views in viewing the concept of poverty. So the issues may include social, economic, cultural and even political aspects. In spatial aspect, National Statistics Bureau (BPS) has also made distinctions between rural and urban poverty since 1999. This variance sometimes makes it difficult for undergraduate researchers to conduct an assessment of this issue. Therefore, this article attempts to analyze and strive to understand the character of urban poverty by using fourteen measures used by BPS. Fourteen indicators were then tested in the field using survey and observation methods. The results of the survey and observation are discussed further in this article

Abstract

The problem of rising fossil energy faced with the limited availability of the commodity in the future. Therefore, it needs new energy sources to tackle the issue. An alternative that can help the economy is the utilization of waste coconut shell that is processed into charcoal. With using principal component analysis, the result of the estimation indicates, there is a unique character that is contained in the shell charcoal commodity. The character of shell charcoal is closed to Giffen goods behavior. The most logical answer is because charcoal is the main raw material of shell burning for a restaurant that has a menu that was burned; and it becomes the unique preferences of the restaurant. They prefer barbecuing their food menu by using charcoal rather than other fuels such as stove, which uses kerosene and LPG. It is because barbecuing with charcoal will produce a better aroma than using the stove with fuel kerosene or LPG.

One of industry exist in the middle of neighborhood is coconut shell charcoal industries. Five manufacturerswere observed to identify and analyze the patterns of production, distribution and production effectiveness. The observation result shows that the entire manufacturer relying on traditional markets in South Tangerang Municipality, Parung District and South Jakarta as a major supplier of raw materials. The main constraints faced by the industries in obtaining raw materials are competition among them (asymmetric information). The pattern of distribution is directly and indirectly distribution. Direct distribution patterns made by selling charcoal to the end consumer (restaurant) and indirect distribution patterns performed by using large suppliers and retailers in traditional markets. The distribution pattern is also performed passively in which the industries are waiting for consumer to come and then make a transaction. However, the entire industries have the effectiveness of production.
