Abstract

This study reveals the author's desire in Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns, which is the author's desires as a subject of lack and desires to obtain his identity. This study will answer two questions: 1) How does Khaled Hosseini's desire manifested in A Thousand Splendid Suns?; 2) What is the Khaled Hosseini?s desire-to-be and desire-to-have manifested in A Thousand Splendid Suns?. This study was done by using theory and method of Lacanian psychoanalysis. Lacanian psychoanalysis discusses human desire through language (signifier) with metaphor and metonymy mechanisms. The results prove that A Thousand Splendid Suns is a manifestation of the desires and lack that exist in Khaled Hosseini as the author through the desire to be (narcissistic) and the desire to have (anaclitic).

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze the process of Individuation of Hero in Khaled Hosseini’s novel “The Kite Runner” in the case of psychoanalitic. This phenomenon is showed by Amir’s psychology. The problem in this study formulated: How is The Individuation of Hero in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner?”. The source of data in this study is The Kite Runner novel which published on 2003 in America. The data collected through annotating, previewing, and interpreting to get a complete analysis about The Individuation of Hero in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. Carl Gustav Jung’s Psychoanalitic is used as a tool of analysis to support the finding on The Individuation of Hero in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner. The result of analysis found that the Individuation of Hero namely Amir as major character in Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner is able to achieve the individuation process with the existence of Persona, Anima, Shadow, and Self in his personality. Then, the major character is able to transform them into the conscious mind and at the same time synchronize and harmonize them, meaning that the major character is able to minimize the persona, realize his anima, balance his shadow, enhance his self gradually leading to the highest hierarchy in the center of the psyche. The individuation process of the major character occurs when he has to face his grim reality and force him to return to Kabul to save Sohrab (Hassan’s son) who goes through the sexual attack. Hassan’s loyalty to get the blue kite proves that he has led a life of virtue. Having realized that he has been a true coward, Amir feels sure that he can repay a kindness given by Hassan by means of returning to Kabul to save Sohrab (Hassan’s son). Amir tries so hard to overcome all the obstacles for the sake of saving Sohrab. When Amir manages to see Sohrab, his disguising is recognized. It turns out that Assef, being the stooge of Taliban’s leader, is the mastermind behind the locking up. Assef used to intimidate Amir and he is also a Pashtunese. Amir begs for mercy that Sohrab is allowed to set free, but he rejects it. Amir makes use of the moment to repay a kindness given by Hassan. Finally, Amir manages to set Sohrab free and takes him to the US and adopts him as his own son. Keywords: individuation, hero, persona, anima, shadow, self.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to reveal the phenomenon of socio-cultural facts of women as subalterns in the anthology of the short story "Ketika Saatnya" by Darmawati Majid. The problem in this research was "how were the third-world women narrated in the anthology of short stories Ketika Saatnya?" This study used the subalternate theory by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. The term subaltern referred to a population that was socially, politically, and geographically subdued by a group that controls them. The subaltern was a group whose voice was always represented and became a tool of a hegemonic practice that symbolized political, military, social, and even cultural domination by one group over another. The results of this study revealed that the position of women as subalterns was narrated as a subaltern group trying to convey their voice to be heard even though they occupied a position as "third-world women" who were trapped between tradition and modernization.

Abstract

The main problem of this paper focused on a female major character, namely Laila who was portrayed as a weak woman that faithfully waited for her husband to return home after sailing. This paper tried to reveal how the form of misogyny towards Laila's character through a feminism perspective. The status of a widow, the husband's debt, and her baby's child were a burden of her life that must be borne by herself. The status that she carried became the trigger for the misogynistic practices. This “Perempuan Pesisir” short story explained the reality of how the domestication motives of women in Southeast Sulawesi had become global-local issues, starting from our immediate environment, the environment in the capacity of the larger community, to the wider community at the level of the state and nations. Such a topic could have just emerged in the past few decades. However, it had been tormenting women centuries ago. Thus, this short story could be a source of reference or teaching material for the initial knowledge of feminism to the people on a patriarchal basis that was deeply rooted in Southeast Sulawesi.

Abstract

A pandemic or global epidemic is a disease transmitted simultaneously throughout the world. In 2019, the world faced a global outbreak of Covid-19. As a result, all lifelines have been paralyzed, starting from access to education, the economy, and health. However, there is a common thread from the event. One of them is the contribution of some vocabulary or foreign language terms. This paper aims to present some pandemic vocabulary and its equivalents through the collection of short stories “Cerita Saat Jeda” by Kaizen Writing Alumni Dee Lestari. The problem in this paper is formulated in the form of a question, “What is the English pandemic vocabulary narrated in the collection of short stories “Cerita Saat Jeda"? To answer these problems, the article uses the literary criticism approach of M.H. Abrams "the mirror and the lamp." According to Abrams, literature has three functions, namely, as a mirror, as a lamp, and as a medium. The research results show that the Covid-19 pandemic positively impacts society by producing new vocabulary or terms through literary works. The pandemic has become the new Indonesian language vocabulary in the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI).

Abstract

This work aims to provide a detailed account of the moral teachings conveyed in the North Halmahera Talaga Biru Folklore. This method of this study employs qualitative research. The data collection technique employs interviews, audio recordings, and a comprehensive review of relevant literature. On the other hand, analyzing data involves multiple steps, including data reduction, display, verification, and conclusion. The research results reveal two overarching messages: positive and negative. The good messages encompassed in the text are as follows: 1) hope, 2) struggle, 3) sacrifice, 4) loyalty, 5) cooperation, 6) cultural values, 7) patience, 8) friendship, and 9) religious values. On the other hand, the contrasting message conveys a sense of sorrow. Sadness is a negative emotion due to the excessive and unreasonable sadness depicted in the Talaga Biru mythology. The depicted grief revolves around the character Majojaru, who experiences profound sorrow and sheds tears for a continuous duration of three days and three nights, ultimately resulting in their demise. In addition, it is anticipated that this will contribute to the development of theoretical knowledge about the moral themes found in folklore from North Halmahera. Moreover, it can serve as a valuable resource for managing culturally and literarily oriented tourism. Furthermore, this study is anticipated to make a valuable contribution to endeavours aimed at enhancing public consciousness regarding the significance of conserving the adjacent natural environment as a habitat for all global ecosystems.

Abstract

The era of digitalization opens spaces for anyone to express themselves, primarily through virtual spaces such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. The implication is that cultural and moral degradation is caused by foreign cultural intervention through content uploaded on social media, especially regarding impoliteness in language. Social media has several forms of language impoliteness, such as swearing, threats, insults, and hoax news. This form of language impoliteness in social media leads to defamation and hate speech. Defamation and hate speech violate Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE). The problem of defamation and hate speech is one of the vital national issues that must be resolved. Therefore, as a lecturer responsible for the tri dharma of higher education, the authors plan to conduct community service titled "The Counseling of Language Politeness at SMA Agape West Halmahera".

Abstract

The anthology of short stories “Ketika Saatnya” is one of the literary works depicting the Buginese woman image written by Darmawati Majid, a Bugis woman. The problem with this article is how the literature illustrates the Buginese woman’s image based on Spivak’s idea of the subaltern and Islamic perspectives on women’s behaviours. This qualitative method, such as postcolonial discourse analysis, involves classifying data according to certain attributes and elements pertinent to the research aims to acquire research outcomes. It categorizes women as a subordinate demographic within society, politics, and geography, subject to the authority of a dominant group, particularly men. Buginese tradition signifies the supremacy of one male faction over another. This research indicates that Bugis women have consistently been placed in subordinate positions. The marginalized minority is portrayed as endeavouring to articulate their viewpoints and attain acknowledgement despite being labelled as “women of underprivileged areas” caught between conventional and Muslim ideologies.
