Abstract

Abstract Early reading difficulties remain a common problem in elementary schools. Many lower-grade students struggle with recognizing similar letters, pronouncing vowels and consonants accurately, and understanding combined sounds such as digraphs and diphthongs. These conditions affect reading fluency and text comprehension, which in turn hinder academic achievement. This study aims to analyze the forms of early reading difficulties and their contributing factors among third-grade students at SD Negeri 2 Bawu, using decoding learning theory as the analytical framework. This research employed a qualitative case study approach through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that students experienced difficulties in distinguishing vowels, visually similar consonants, and digraphs and diphthongs. Contributing factors include psychological aspects, phonological development, family environment, and limited school teaching strategies. These findings highlight the importance of implementing phonological and multisensory-based learning strategies as well as parental involvement in supporting children’s reading development. This study contributes by providing empirical evidence on early reading difficulties and offering a foundation for developing relevant intervention models in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study investigates the habituation of four magic words (please, sorry, thank you, and excuse me) as a strategy to instill politeness values among second-grade students at MI Al-Ma’arif Blimbingrejo. The research was conducted using a qualitative approach with purposive sampling involving ten students categorized as active and passive, complemented by interviews with the classroom teacher. Data were collected through structured observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings reveal that active students used polite expressions 3–6 times per day with clear intonation and appropriate context, while passive students only used them 0–2 times daily, often hesitantly or not at all. Among the four words, “thank you” (40 times) and “please” (39 times) were most frequently used, while “sorry” (20 times) and “excuse me” (12 times) appeared less often. Interviews with the teacher emphasized the role of positive reinforcement, such as praise and smiles, in encouraging students, consistent with Skinner’s reinforcement theory. Meanwhile, students acknowledged using the words mainly in specific contexts, which aligns with Vygotsky’s view of social interaction as scaffolding for moral development. Challenges include limited habituation at home and passive student traits, reflecting Bronfenbrenner’s ecological perspective. Overall, the habituation strategy proved effective in fostering politeness and strengthening character education in elementary madrasah settings.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the quantum teaching with flashcard media in improving reading skills of elementary school students in aksara nglegena. The background of this research is the low reading ability of students in Javanese script, particularly the nglegena script. The nglegena script refers to the basic Javanese characters presented without diacritics (sandhangan) or conjunct forms (pasangan), yet it can still be read and form words or sentences. The Quantum Teaching model was implemented using the TANDUR approach (Grow, Experience, Name, Demonstrate, Repeat, and Celebrate), designed to create a fun and meaningful learning atmosphere. This research employed an experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design and a quantitative approach. The research subjects were 34 third-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Pekalongan. Data analysis using the Paired Sample T-Test showed a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000, indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results. Thus, the Quantum Teaching model with flashcard media proved to be effective in improving reading skills of Javanese nglegena script among third-grade students.
