Abstract

Microgreens, the nutrient-packed young seedlings of vegetables and cereals, have emerged as a promising alternative feed source in animal husbandry. This study evaluates the efficacy of corn microgreens as poultry feed compared to conventional dried corn in village chicken production. Using a randomized complete block design, twenty 2-month-old village chickens (average initial weight: 750g) were divided into two groups: one fed with dried corn (control) and another with corn microgreens (treatment). Growth performance was assessed through weekly measurements of body weight, body length, and wing length over a 4-week period. Results indicated significant improvements (p<0.05) in all growth parameters for the microgreen-fed group. The treatment group showed 18% greater weight gain, 12% increased body length, and 15% longer wing development compared to controls. These enhancements are attributed to the higher concentrations of essential nutrients, particularly proteins (23% higher) and antioxidants (40% higher), in corn microgreens versus mature corn. The study demonstrates that corn microgreens can serve as a superior feed alternative, potentially reducing reliance on conventional feeds while improving poultry growth rates. These findings offer valuable insights for small-scale poultry farmers seeking cost-effective, nutrient-dense feeding strategies.

Abstract

This community service program aims to replicate the mixed cropping system as an innovation in land use development in the urban area of Sidoarjo Regency, East Java. With high pressure on land availability due to urbanization, the productive use of yard land is crucial to support local food security and community well-being. The program was implemented from May to June 2025, involving 10 locations in several sub-districts with various combinations of fast-growing vegetables and horticultural crops. The activity approach included land identification, outreach, technical training, planting implementation, and intensive mentoring. The results showed a significant increase in land productivity and active community participation in intercropping land management. Mixed cropping has proven effective in increasing crop diversification while maintaining micro-ecosystem balance by reducing the use of chemical pesticides. Despite constraints such as limited water supply and maintenance time, efficient irrigation solutions and time management can be an alternative. This model has the potential to be replicated in other urban areas with similar characteristics and can serve as a reference for developing spatial planning policies based on local food security. This activity contributes to community empowerment and sustainable development in urban areas.

Abstract

Jatijejer Village located in Trawas Subdistrict, Mojokerto, East Java, has significant potential in agriculture due to its fertile soil but this potential has not been fully optimized. The main crops widely cultivated there are lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf) and citronella (Cymbopogon nardus (L.) Rendle), which can be processed into essential oils with high economic value and various other benefits. The initial effort in developing Jatijejer Village into the first Atsiri Village in East Java is field learning, which provides a comprehensive overview of the target goals. Hortus Medicus and Rumah Atsiri Indonesia in Tawangmangu, Central Java, were chosen due to their experience in cultivating and processing aromatic plants and producing essential oils. This field learning involved 30 participants, including village officials, representatives of farmer groups, PKK, BUMDES of Jatijejer Village, and community service teams from the University of Surabaya and Wijaya Kusuma University Surabaya. Each participant completed pretests and posttests to measure knowledge improvement after the field learning. The results showed an increase in participants' knowledge, with an average pretest score of 58% rising to 98% in the posttest. This field learning activity proved effective in enhancing participants' knowledge, supporting the success of the village development program, and optimizing the economic and tourism potential of Jatijejer Village.

Abstract

The problem of accumulating organic waste can be solved by converting it into compost and can be used to strengthen food security in urban areas. The purpose of this research is to find a solution to the problem of urban organic waste burden into an economically valuable resource by processing it into compost, studying the effect of urban organic waste compost on the growth and yield of vegetable plants (shallots), and providing a fertile and affordable planting medium, reducing dependence on conventional fertilizers that must be imported from outside the city. Research on the application of compost produced from a compost house for shallot plants with 4 treatments: pure soil planting medium, soil planting medium plus leaf compost, soil planting medium plus young coconut fiber compost, and soil planting medium plus rain tree leaves. The study used a randomized block design with seven replications. The results of the study were that the best growth and yield of shallot plants were obtained from plants planted in soil media without being mixed with compost, while the worst were from plants planted in soil media with fresh rain tree leaf compost. The conclusion of the study was that the compost used was not yet mature because the composting process was only 28-35 days, or with rain tree leaves without a composting process. The use of immature compost or organic material that has not fully decomposed will actually have a negative impact on plants. Plants and microbes compete for nutrients or plants can be poisoned by compounds produced by the composting process (such as ammonium compounds). The implication of this research is that compost utilization will have a positive impact when the compost is fully mature. Compost producers, such as compost houses or recycling centers (PDU) in Surabaya, should release mature compost or socialize to the public that compost produced from compost houses needs to be incubated for at least 30 days before it can be used for urban farming activities.
