Abstract

This discourse analysis focuses on the emotional narrative of Diane Warren's song "How Do I Live?" employing a comprehensive framework encompassing textual and contextual dimensions. The study scrutinizes the grammatical and lexical aspects, unveiling intricate linguistic devices used to convey sentiments of love and longing. The analysis highlights the song's linguistic richness and emotional depth through meticulous examination of reference, ellipsis, conjunction, repetition, synonymy, and collocation. Additionally, a contextual interpretation sheds light on the personal, locational, and temporal dimensions, emphasizing the immediacy and urgency of the writer's emotional experience. Personal deixis, featuring first and second-person pronouns and the endearing address "baby," creates a powerful emotional connection between the writer and the loved one. Spatial deixis employs metaphors to vividly depict the writer's emotional world, emphasizing the profound impact of the loved one on their emotional well-being. Temporal deixis, featuring a mix of tenses and time-related expressions, grounds the emotional narrative in relatable moments of longing and apprehension. This analysis showcases how the song effectively combines linguistic and contextual elements to create a poignant narrative, providing valuable insights into the complex interplay of language, emotions, and narrative in song lyrics.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety is a prevalent issue that significantly hinders the learning process for students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This study aims to explore the causes of speaking anxiety among EFL students at PSDKU Aru and to identify coping strategies that may help mitigate the anxiety. The significance of this research lies in its focus on understanding the multifaceted nature of speaking anxiety, which includes both psychological and physiological dimensions, and its impact on students' ability to learn and communicate effectively in English. Data were collected from 37 students in the English Education Study Program using a structured questionnaire, which measured different types of anxiety, contributing factors, and the coping mechanisms students adopted. Results revealed that a substantial number of students experienced various forms of speaking anxiety, such as nervousness, tense body language, and fear of negative evaluation. Factors contributing to this anxiety include lack of vocabulary, fear of making grammatical errors, and low self-confidence. Several strategies were used by students to manage their anxiety, such as regular practice, relaxation techniques, and positive thinking. The findings of this study suggest the need for targeted interventions in educational practices to create a supportive learning environment that encourages students to overcome anxiety and become more confident speakers of English. This paper provides insights that can assist educators in designing effective teaching methods to alleviate the impact of speaking anxiety on EFL learners.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the narrative writing skills of high school students through the use of the Toontastic 3D application as an interactive learning medium. The targets of the activity are grade X students at SMA Negeri 5 Ambon who have challenges in developing ideas and narrative writing structures. Theoretically, this activity is based on the constructivist learning approach and the theory of multiple intelligences, which emphasizes the importance of active student involvement and the use of media that suits visual and kinesthetic learning styles. Toontastic 3D, as an animation-based digital media, provides opportunities for students to creatively organize and develop storylines while strengthening their narrative cohesion and coherence. The method of activity implementation includes socialization, training on the use of the application, assistance in writing animation-based narratives, and reflection sessions. The evaluation was conducted through questionnaires that were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of the questionnaire analysis from 30 respondents showed that 87% of students felt more motivated in writing after using Toontastic 3D, 83% stated that this media helped them in organizing the story structure (introduction, conflict, climax, and resolution), and 78% claimed to be more confident in expressing their ideas in writing. In addition, students reported that the visual and interactive learning experience made the writing process more enjoyable and meaningful. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the integration of interactive digital media such as Toontastic 3D is an effective approach to support the improvement of narrative writing literacy among secondary school students. This activity also encourages innovation in Indonesian language learning through the use of technology that suits the characteristics of the digital generation.
