Abstract

The 21st century learning trend emphasizes skills, not just knowledge. Among the emerging competencies are learning and innovation, which are very possible to be accommodated at the higher education level. In order to realize this, research skills are an important competency that must be possessed by students and are the outlet of the studies carried out. This study is a quantitative descriptive study that analyzes research skills in students' scientific work which is the output of the biotechnology course. The research skills aspect is based on the Research Skill Development (RSD) developed by Willison and O'Regan which has been modified. Based on the results of the analysis of scientific work which is the output of the biotechnology course, students achieved a score of 81 with a very good category. However, there are several aspects that still need to be strengthened. The lowest aspect of research skills is presenting problems, namely with a score of 2.0 and is categorized as lacking. The aspect that is also categorized as lacking is literature search which strengthens the analysis with a score of 2.2. Students need to strengthen their skills in literature search as an effort to deepen their findings. Further research can be directed at the implementation of problem-based learning combined with science writing heuristic as an effort to strengthen the aspects of problem presentation and literature search in research skills.

Abstract

The growing dependence on fossil fuels has triggered environmental concerns, including greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Biodiesel production from waste cooking oil offers an environmentally friendly alternative that can be implemented through practical science activities. However, limited laboratory facilities often hinder its application in higher education. This study aims to analyze students’ perceptions of a biodiesel production experiment using low-cost equipment. A mixed-method approach with a sequential explanatory design was employed. Quantitative data were collected through closed-ended questionnaires completed by 63 students from the “Energy in Life Systems” course, complemented by semi-structured interviews with 10 selected participants. The five dimensions assessed included conceptual understanding, ease of use, safety, engagement, and cost-efficiency. Results showed mean scores of 4.46 for conceptual understanding (very good), 4.37 for cost-efficiency (very good), 4.43 for safety (very good), 4.46 for engagement (very good), and 4.06 for ease of use (good). Qualitative findings reinforced that students found the practicum effective, safe, enjoyable, and aligned with real-world applications. In conclusion, the use of low-cost equipment in biodiesel practicum enhances meaningful and contextual science learning, especially in resource-limited educational settings. Therefore, low-cost equipment-based practicum is recommended to be integrated into the science education curriculum, particularly in the context of project-based learning and limited laboratory facilities. Key Words: biodiesel; low-cost equipment; practical learning; student perception; renewable energy

Abstract

Plastik merukan salah satu limbah yang sulit ditangani karena sifatnya yang non biodegradable. Singkong genderuwo merupakan potensi daerah Bojonegoro yang belum banyak dikembangkan. Pati dapat digunakan sebagai bahan utama pembuatan plastik. Untuk memperkuat ditambahkan nanoselulosa kulit durian yang juga merupakan limbah yang masih jarang dimanfaatkan. Dalam rangka meningkatkan fungsi sebagai kemasan aktif, digunakan ekstrak kulit secang sebagai antibakteria. Peneltian ini bertujuan untuk melihat pengaruh penambahan nanoselulosa kulit durian dan ekstrak kayu secang terhadap kualitas biodegrabilitas, kekuatan, efektifitas antibakteria dan karakteristik plastik berbahan pati singkong genderuwo. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimen dengan mengamati parameter uji terhadap 3 variasi formula: F1 plastik dengan penambahan nanoselulosa dan ekstrak, F2 plastik dengan penambahan ekstrak dan F3 plastik dengan penambahan nanoselulosa. Penambahan nanoselulosa berpengaruh terhadap kekuatan dan karakteristik plastik berbasis pati singkong genderuwo, akan tetapi tidak mempengaruhi biodegrabilitasnya. Penambahan ekstrak kayu secang yang terkonfirmasi melalui penapisan mengandung senyawa flavonoid, fenol, alkaloid dan terpenoid memberikan efek antimikroba sehingga sampel makanan bisa bertahan lebih lama. Diantara tiga formula, formula 1 memberikan peforma yang cukup baik dari parameter yang diujikan diantaranya kekuatan tarik beban 7 kg, biodegrabilitas pada pengamatan 7 hari 25,65%, ketebalan 0,033 cm, transparansi 4.369, kelarutan 12,85%, dan trasnmisi uap air 23x10-4. Dari ketiga formula F1 memberikan performa plastik yang paling baik. Biodegradable plastic SESCALAN berpotensi untuk diimplikasikan dalam dunia pendidikan maupun kegiatan kemasyarakatan.

Abstract

Informasi yang beredar pada masa pandemi sangat bervariasi dengan tingkat validitas yang berbeda-beda. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat fenomena literasi informasi yang terjadi pada masa ini. Fenomenologi dipilih sebagai metode penelitian dengan populasi penelitian adalah mahasiswa program IPA di provinsi Jawa Timur sedangkan sampelnya adalah mahasiswa pendidikan IPA dari 5 kabupaten dan 1 kota di Jawa Timur. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara dan pengisian formulir survei. Analisis data dilakukan dengan metode analisis Miles dan Huberman yang terdiri dari reduksi dan penyajian data berdasarkan masing-masing literasi informasi dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil analisis data menggambarkan bahwa responden cukup baik dalam menentukan sifat dan cakupan informasi yang dibutuhkan. Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan 79% sampel menyatakan pentingnya memilih topik dalam mengakses informasi mengenai covid 19. Upaya mengakses informasi yang dibutuhkan secara efektif dan efisien juga cukup baik, mengingat 58% sampel memilih situs resmi pemerintah yang sesuai. lebih meyakinkan dalam penyajian data. Sementara itu, proses evaluasi kritis terhadap informasi dan sumbernya juga telah dilakukan yang ditunjukkan dengan 93% sampel menyatakan perlunya klarifikasi dan diskusi atas informasi yang diperoleh. Pencapaian tujuan akses informasi cukup baik dengan adanya upaya sebagian besar responden dalam menentukan tujuan akses informasi pada awal proses. Dengan adanya penetapan tujuan maka arah pencarian akan lebih terfokus sehingga 75% sampel mengungkapkan tercapainya tujuan. Pemahaman yang baik terhadap aspek hukum, ekonomi, dan sosial terkait penggunaan informasi terlihat pada pemilahan informasi yang akan disebarluaskan. Sebanyak 137 sampel menyatakan bahwa validitas informasi merupakan kriteria penting agar informasi layak untuk diteruskan. Secara garis besar responden sudah berupaya menerapkan literasi informasi meskipun tentunya masih ada hal yang perlu diperkuat.
