Abstract

Abstract

Background: Pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among children under five years of age, particularly those younger than two years. Malnutrition is an important risk factor that can impair immune function and increase susceptibility to respiratory infections, including pneumonia. Hospital records at Selasih Regional Hospital, Pelalawan District, indicated an increase in pneumonia cases and malnutrition among children under two years of age. This study aimed to determine the relationship between nutritional status and the incidence of pneumonia among children aged 6–24 months. Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional design using secondary data obtained from inpatient medical records at Selasih Regional Hospital. The study population consisted of all children aged 6–24 months who were hospitalized between 2017 and 2022. A total of 393 medical records met the inclusion criteria and were included using a total sampling technique. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. Results: A significant relationship was found between nutritional status and the incidence of pneumonia (p<0.001). Children with poor nutritional status were 28.7 times more likely to develop pneumonia than children with normal nutritional status (OR=28.7; 95% CI: 13.5–60.7). Conclusion: Poor nutritional status is strongly associated with an increased risk of pneumonia among children aged 6–24 months. Efforts to improve nutritional status may help reduce the burden of pneumonia among young children.

Abstract

Abstract

Excessive and continuous consumption of junk food will impact children's health, especially it can cause nutritional disorders at an early age which leads to an increased risk of non-communicable diseases. Cases of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) or chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and kidney failure in children are caused by consumption patterns with unbalanced nutrition from an early age experiencing an increasing trend. Community service with the theme of Real Food Consumption Education as an Effort to Prevent Non-Communicable Diseases in Elementary School Children was carried out on Monday, June 23, 2025 for fifth grade students at 008 Public Elementary School, Lubuk Siam Village. This educational implementation was carried out by explaining the material and also followed by games using pictures of various types of real food and fast food. After the presentation of the material, students participated in games using cards containing pictures of various examples of real food and fast food. This community service aims to educate school-age children to be able to choose good and healthy foods to prevent non-communicable diseases in children. In addition to children, parents and teachers also have a role to understand the importance of providing healthy nutrition, especially in consuming sugar, salt and fat. Providing good nutrition to children is one way to fulfill their right to health, a shared endeavor. This community service project utilized PowerPoint presentations and handouts. Based on the results of the community service activities, it was discovered that students did not yet fully understand the difference between real food and fast food. Therefore, ongoing education on the importance of consuming natural foods is essential to prevent the occurrence of non-communicable diseases in the future.

Abstract

Background: Immunization coverage in Indonesia declined, with most provinces, including Riau, missing the Ministry of Health's strategic plan targets. In Lubuk Siam Village, Riau, community awareness of the importance of immunization was low. A 2023 survey showed that only 13% of toddlers were immunized. Methods: This mixed-method study utilized a sequential exploratory design. It began with the collection of qualitative data, which was then followed by quantitative data to enhance the findings. The study was conducted from May to September 2025 in Riau, Indonesia. The target population consisted of all mothers with toddlers aged 0 to 60 months. A total of 113 mothers participated in the study. Results: Bivariate analysis showed that family support (p = 0.031), knowledge (p = 0.004), and attitude (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with immunization status. In the final multivariable model, attitude was the strongest predictor of immunization status (AOR = 9.11; p < 0.001). Qualitative findings identified parental concerns about vaccine side effects, lack of paternal support, low maternal education, weak community leadership, limited health promotion activities, and family-centered decision-making as barriers to immunization. Conclusions: Maternal attitude was the most influential factor associated with immunization status. Family support, community influences, and health education were identified as key factors affecting immunization uptake. Strengthening family engagement and health promotion programs may improve immunization coverage
