Abstract

When it comes to English Literature Classes, sometimes students? find it very hard to understand the materials. Practices of sharing knowledge between teacher and students or between their peers became alternative solution to overcome these difficulties. This study tries to explore students? responses toward knowledge sharing practice in learning English literature through WhatsApp. This is a descriptive qualitative study that uses Forum Group Discussion as the instrument. The participants of this research are 10 students that currently enrolled in literature subject. It can be concluded from the study that although most of the students thought that literature subject is quite difficult, but it is still challenging to them. In relation to Knowledge sharing practices via WhatsApp clear some confusions faced by the students in literature subject.

Abstract

This study investigates in-service English teachers’ voices toward the use of authentic materials in teaching reading and the challenges in using the materials. A narrative inquiry study is employed in which the data were qualitatively collected through interview and documentation process. This study was conducted at one of the Private Junior High Schools in Bogor, Indonesia. An in-service English teacher was chosen as a participant who participated in the process of collecting data through structured interviews by audio recording. The result of this research shows that an in-service English teacher have positive perceptions toward the use of authentic material in teaching reading. Various positive reasons and challenges for the use of authentic materials in the classroom were revealed.

Abstract

There has been an abundant raise in recent years in the concern in using digital games for language learning. Additionally, gaming plays an important role in the everyday lives of youngsters and young adults in developed countries. It is a considerable option for teacher to adapt gaming into language learning since gaming itself became a habit that will easily be adopted into learning. This study will examine gaming opportunities in language learning, and how higher education students benefitting from that. It will employ quantitative research that uses Structured Interview and Online Questionnaire as research Instruments. By the end of the study, higher education students found out that digital game is an easy media to implement in language learning due to their familiarity to digital games. The implementation of digital games excites the students in learning English, and makes a conducive learning situation.

Abstract

Assessment literacy, the thorough understanding of assessment, is essential in education. However, the development of teacher assessment literacy in Indonesia has been alarmingly slow. This study investigated the development of teacher assessment literacy in English classes using a descriptive qualitative research design with 33 items related to basic assessment concepts. The results showed that there has been no significant change in the literacy level of English teachers in Indonesia. This low literacy level has not been seriously addressed by the government or education units, which has had various negative consequences for students and teachers alike

Abstract

This study attempts to critically explore the representation of witches in two genres of text, i.e. popular animated movie Spirited Away and a historical essay published on history.com. Critical Discourse Analysis and Critical-feminist Approach to Marx’s ‘primitive accumulation’ are incorporated as the guiding framework in the data analysis process. Findings showcase that the representation of witches in animated movie highlights the criticism of capitalist disruption of Japanese gender roles as can be seen from the ambivalent characters of the movie’s main witch antagonist, Yubaba and her twin sister Zeniba. Furthermore, in the historical essay, findings portray that witches’ representation in historical article does not guarantee that they are free from marginalizing and stereotypical accusation. Even though the highlight is on the severe state-sponsored punishment and disciplining toward women’s body during the great witch hunt, the actors exerting power are made invisible, resulting in the perpetuation of unjust power balance within the society.
