Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di HKBP Ressort Pelikan Medan dengan fokus pada pelaksanaan program bimbingan belajar gratis bagi anak dan remaja jemaat pada jenjang SD, SMP, dan SMA. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman materi pelajaran, motivasi belajar, serta prestasi akademik peserta melalui pendampingan belajar yang terstruktur dan berkelanjutan. Metode pelaksanaan menggunakan pendekatan partisipatif dengan menerapkan pembelajaran kolaboratif yang melibatkan tutor dan peserta didik dalam proses belajar secara aktif. Kegiatan dilakukan melalui beberapa tahap, yaitu persiapan, pelaksanaan, monitoring, dan evaluasi. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa program bimbingan belajar gratis mampu meningkatkan keaktifan peserta, memperbaiki pemahaman terhadap materi pelajaran, serta menumbuhkan motivasi dan kepercayaan diri dalam belajar. Selain itu, kegiatan ini juga memperkuat peran gereja sebagai mitra pendidikan dalam mendukung perkembangan akademik dan karakter generasi muda jemaat. Program ini diharapkan dapat terus dikembangkan sebagai bentuk pelayanan gereja di bidang pendidikan dan kontribusi perguruan tinggi dalam meningkatkan kualitas sumber daya manusia

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types and meanings of metaphors found in selected poems by Chairil Anwar based on Goatly’s theory of metaphor. The objectives of this study are to identify the kinds of metaphors used and to interpret their meanings in each poem. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected from ten selected poems, namely Aku, Sajak Putih, Diponegoro, Penghidupan, Suara Malam, Catetan Tahun 1945, Aku Berada Kembali, Cintaku Jauh di Pulau, Senja di Pelabuhan Kecil, and Derai-derai Cemara. The data were analyzed by classifying the metaphors into active metaphor, subjective metaphor, asymmetric metaphor, dead metaphor, and mimetic metaphor according to Goatly’s framework. The findings show that Chairil Anwar dominantly uses active metaphors to express strong emotions, rebellion, struggle, and existential awareness. Subjective metaphors are frequently used to convey personal feelings and psychological conditions. Asymmetric metaphors reflect power relations, conflict, and life struggles, while dead metaphors indicate expressions that have become conventional in meaning. Mimetic metaphors are used to create imaginative and dramatic imagery in the poems. The analysis reveals that metaphors play an important role in strengthening meaning, emotional intensity, and poetic expression in Chairil Anwar’s works. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of metaphor analysis in literary studies, especially in Indonesian poetry. It is expected that this research can enrich readers’ comprehension of figurative language and provide references for future researchers who are interested in metaphor studies using Goatly’s theory.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of phrases in writing descriptive texts produced by the tenth-grade students of SMK N 3 Medan, particularly Class X KI 3 of the Chemical Industry major. The objectives of this research are to identify the types of phrases used by the students and to determine the dominant type of phrase found in their descriptive writing. This research applied a qualitative descriptive design. The data were collected from students’ written descriptive texts. The technique of data analysis was based on Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings of the study reveal that the students used several types of phrases in their descriptive texts, namely noun phrases, verb phrases, adjective phrases, and prepositional phrases. Among these types, noun phrases were dominantly used by the students in constructing descriptive texts. This indicates that students tend to focus on describing objects, people, and places by using noun-centered constructions. However, the use of other phrase types was relatively limited, which shows that students still lack syntactic variety in their writing. In conclusion, the use of phrases plays a crucial role in constructing clear and detailed descriptive texts. The dominance of noun phrases reflects the nature of descriptive writing, yet students need further guidance in using various phrase types to improve sentence complexity and writing quality. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers provide more focused instruction and practice on phrase structures to enhance students’ grammatical competence and writing skills.

Abstract

This study analyzes the realization of interpersonal function in the tenth grade English textbook Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress used in Senior High School under the Merdeka Curriculum. The objectives are to identify how interpersonal function is realized through mood types and to determine the dominant mood type in the textbook. The study applies Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), focusing on the interpersonal metafunction and the Mood system, which includes declarative, interrogative, and imperative clauses. A descriptive qualitative design with document analysis was employed. The data were clauses taken from reading texts. A total of 180 clauses were analyzed by identifying mood elements such as Subject, Finite, Predicator, Complement, and Adjunct, and then classified into mood types. The findings show that all three mood types are realized in the textbook, with declarative mood as the most dominant, functioning to present information and explanation. Interrogative mood is used to guide students’ comprehension and encourage interaction, while imperative mood functions to give instructions and direct learning activities. The dominance of declarative mood indicates that the textbook positions the writer as an information provider and students as receivers of knowledge, although the presence of interrogative and imperative clauses still promotes participation. Overall, the textbook supports communicative learning and contributes to the development of students’ communicicative competence through its linguistic choices.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) merupakan bentuk komitmen institusi pendidikan untuk memberikan kontribusi nyata kepada masyarakat melalui berbagai kegiatan yang bermanfaat.SMK Negeri 1 Teluk Mengkudu memerlukan pendekatan pembelajaran inovatif untuk mengatasi tantangan siswa di era digital, seperti kurangnya motivasi akses informasi, serta meningkatkan pengalaman belajar relevan dan efektif. Tujuan PKM ini untuk memotivasi belajar siswa dengan menciptakan lingkungan yang inspiratif dan menarik.Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat dengan judul “Meningkatkan energi anak negeri melalui pembelajaran inovatif di SMK Negeri 1 Teluk Mengkudu” adalah metode edukatif. Metode edukatif dalam Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (PKM) adalah pendekatan yang digunakan untuk menyampaikan pengetahuan, keterampilan, atau sikap kepada masyarakat sasaran dengan cara yang efektif dan interaktif. PKM "Meningkatkan Energi Anak Negeri" di SMKN 1 Teluk Mengkudu sukses tingkatkan semangat belajar siswa melalui empat program utama: seminar pendidikan tentang teknologi, optimalisasi perpustakaan, pelatihan public speaking, dan pembelajaran interaktif dengan Wordwall. Hasilnya, motivasi dan prestasi siswa meningkat, menjadi landasan pengembangan lingkungan belajar yang inovatif dan inspiratif.Program PKM di SMKN 1 Teluk Mengkudu berhasil meningkatkan pengetahuan, motivasi belajar, dan keterampilan komunikasi siswa melalui seminar pendidikan, optimalisasi perpustakaan, pelatihan public speaking, dan pembelajaran interaktif Wordwall. Diharapkan, program ini menjadi fondasi bagi peningkatan kualitas pendidikan dan penciptaan generasi yang siap menghadapi tantangan masa depan di sekolah dan masyarakat.
