Abstract

This article examines the social, economic, and ecological conflicts stemming from the development of Rempang Eco City, a National Strategic Project (PSN) in the Riau Islands. The research utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach, incorporating in-depth interviews with four participants. There are 33 questions in the interview, but only 22 of them are important, this is related to the saturation data found in the interview questions. It took a month to obtain the information. The results indicate that traditional ways of making a living are disappearing, people are moving and breaking up communities, the economy is weak, and women have trouble getting to natural resources because of things like coastal degradation, land and green grabbing, and limited access to natural resources. The government and investors focus on the long-term economic benefits, but local communities have to deal with social and environmental problems that are worse than the money they get. This article adds to the field of political ecology by talking about the developmental paradox: instead of promoting inclusive prosperity, the project makes social inequality worse, hurts environmental sustainability, and puts the cultural identity of indigenous borderland communities at risk.

Abstract

Population welfare plays a fundamental role in shaping political, economic, and social systems, as it reflects the achievement of national development goals. Welfare indicators generally encompass social, economic, and governance dimensions. This study aims to classify Indonesian provinces based on People’s Welfare Indicators using a machine learning approach, namely the Unsupervised Possibilistic Fuzzy C-Means (UPFC) method, which integrates Fuzzy C-Means and the Possibilistic Cluster Algorithm to manage uncertainty and overlapping cluster boundaries in socioeconomic data. The results identify two distinct clusters: pre-prosperous and prosperous provinces. A total of 55.88% (19 provinces) are categorized as pre-prosperous, while 15 provinces are classified as prosperous. Beyond statistical classification, the clustering pattern reveals a clear socio-regional structure. Prosperous provinces are largely concentrated in western Indonesia, particularly on Java, characterized by stronger infrastructure, economic productivity, and access to public services. In contrast, many provinces in eastern Indonesia fall into the pre-prosperous cluster, indicating persistent structural disparities. Theoretically, the findings support the uneven development perspective, demonstrating that welfare inequality in Indonesia is spatially structured rather than randomly distributed. Practically, the results provide an evidence-based foundation for targeted fiscal allocation and prioritization of basic service provision to promote more balanced and inclusive national development.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This research discusses the role of families and nursing homes in improving the quality of life of the elderly. Social problems facing the elderly include the ability of families and nursing homes to meet their needs. The elderly are part of the demographic bonus challenge and need support for physical, economic, psychological and social well-being. Shifts in family functions have led to an increase in the number of elderly people in nursing homes. The International Convention on the Elderly emphasizes the importance of access to basic needs and employment opportunities, but Indonesia has not ratified this convention, even though there are local policies that recognize the elderly as a vulnerable group that must be empowered. This research uses a constructivist paradigm and qualitative methods with in-depth interviews and participant observation to collect data. The results show that the pattern of caring for elderly people in families and nursing homes is different, with nursing homes often being a place for elderly people who have been neglected by their families. Families have an important role in caring for and supporting elderly people, which can significantly influence their quality of life. Nursing homes also play a role in providing care and support, but face challenges such as limited resources and social stigma. This research highlights the importance of a holistic approach in elderly care, both in the context of families and nursing home institutions. Well-functioning families and well-managed nursing homes can improve the quality of life of seniors, by taking into account their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs.

Abstract

Undocumented migrant workers are highly vulnerable to various risks due to their limited access to legal protection and social security in the host country. Under such circumstances, social capital serves as a crucial resource that enables them to sustain their livelihoods. This study aims to describe the role of social capital in the survival strategies of undocumented migrant workers originating from Dabo Lama Village, Singkep District, Lingga Regency, Indonesia, who are employed in Malaysia. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving purposively selected informants. The analysis was guided by Robert D. Putnam's theory of social capital, which emphasizes three key dimensions: trust, social networks, and norms. The findings reveal that social capital constitutes the primary resource that enables undocumented migrant workers to cope with the challenges arising from their irregular status. Trust established through relationships with family members, relatives, neighbors, friends, and fellow migrant workers facilitates access to employment opportunities, information, and assistance during difficult situations. Social networks function as important channels for obtaining jobs, accommodation, informal protection, and economic support while living in Malaysia. Meanwhile, shared norms of mutual trust, reciprocity, solidarity, and mutual assistance strengthen social cohesion and maintain sustainable social relationships among migrant workers. These three dimensions of social capital interact to form an adaptive mechanism that enables undocumented migrant workers to survive despite limited formal protection and the high risks associated with working in Malaysia.
