Abstract

Islamic communication and broadcasting in the practice of pilgrimage and umrah is an important theme that is rarely highlighted, although in a separate focus of discussion, each theme has been widely studied. A good and effective Islamic communication and broadcasting practices are needed to support the services and guidance of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. This is based on the objective conditions of the Hajj and Umrah journeys, especially related to religious guidance that has not been able to meet the needs and expectations of the pilgrims themselves. This study is basically an attempt by researchers to investigate how the themes of Islamic communication and broadcasting studies in the pilgrimage and umrah trips are discussed and reviewed in various existing scientific publications. Therefore, the chosen form of research is literature review, which focuses on publishing articles in various Scopus indexed journals and the Google Scholar article database on related themes in the 2010-2021 period. The results showed: (1) Conceptual attributes: Islamic communication and broadcasting is understood as a field of study that examines communication practices for the development of Islamic da'wah in harmony with Islamic principles and teachings; (2) Antecedents: the lack of studies, the actual condition of the management of the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages, as well as the need for changes in service orientation and communication in the Hajj and Umrah journeys; (3) Consequences: increasing the faith and religiosity of the congregation, the delivery of Islamic messages to the congregation, increasing the understanding of the congregation, and increasing awareness to present competent Hajj and Umrah travel guides; (4) Socio-cultural context: changes in the socio-cultural, political, economic situation and patterns of community religiosity; and (5) Related concepts: adding other scientific perspectives to the study of Islamic communication and broadcasting in the pilgrimage and umrah journeys.

Despite the contradiction between the comprehensive nature of Islamic da’wah (kāffah) and fragmented digital da’wah practices, there is no adequate theoretical framework to bridge the transformation of religious authority when algorithms modify da’wah messages without supervision. The study examines changes in Islamic da’wah practices in the digital era, utilizing artificial intelligence, and employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach. The results reveal seven significant impacts: 1) a shift from spiritual-moral aspects to technology-driven message dissemination; 2) format adaptation following digital trends; 3) social media's influence in expanding access; 4) artificial intelligence contributions in content presentation; 5) challenges in balancing popularity with teaching integrity; 6) ethical issues in religious communication; and 7) the importance of education and supervision. The findings have significant implications for Islamic educational institutions, suggesting an urgent need to develop integrated curricula that equip future religious leaders with both technological competencies and an understanding of prophetic communication ethics in digital contexts, thereby maintaining the integrity of Islamic teachings while engaging contemporary audiences.

Abstract

The study essentially aims to analyze the changes occurring within the practice of dakwah as a form of communicating Islamic messages in the era of digital technology and artificial intelligence. The practice of dakwah must retain its prophetic communication dimension even as it adjusts to new communication formats brought about by the digital era and artificial intelligence. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method. This method was chosen for its capacity to provide a profound understanding of complex phenomena within their contexts, aligned with the research objective to analyze the changes in communication patterns and their effects on dakwah practices. Data is gathered through documentation and observation of dakwah practices across various platforms and digital media. The study indicates that the shifts in dakwah communication patterns in the digital era and the advancement of artificial intelligence have significant and intricate impacts on the comprehensive communication of Islamic prophetic messages. Key points include: (1) Changes in the meaning and practice of dakwah depict a shift in focus from the spiritual and moral aspects to the dissemination of Islamic messages through technological platforms; (2) Changes in dakwah communication formats and platforms reflect the adaptation of preachers to digital trends and audience preferences; (3) The influence of social media in dakwah practices opens broad avenues for disseminating Islamic messages; (4) Artificial intelligence (AI) has notably contributed to presenting dakwah content to the public; (5) Normative dynamics in digital-era dakwah communication reveal the challenges in maintaining a balance between popularity and the integrity of religious teachings; (6) Ethical challenges and controversies in digital dakwah underscore the need to uphold moral and ethical values in religious communication; and (7) Education and supervision emerge as pivotal in addressing the challenges of digital dakwah. Content creators, preachers, and society at large must be equipped with a proper understanding of technology usage aligned with scholarly and ethical responsibility, ensuring that the conveyance of religious messages remains accurate, substantial, and consistent with Islamic values.

Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan metode deskriptif-analitik yang berfokus pada kajian berbagai literatur dan fenomena dakwah kontemporer. Data dikumpulkan melalui dokumentasi, observasi, wawancara, dan triangulasi untuk pengecekan dan pendalaman kajian. Hasil studi ini menunjukkan bahwa: (1) Dakwah Islam merupakan kegiatan penting yang harus terus dijalankan untuk memenuhi kebutuhan informasi dan pengajaran agama masyarakat digital yang rentan mengalami kekeringan spiritual, dekandensi nilai dan moral, ataupun perubahan perilaku dan budaya hidup yang menjauh dari ajaran Islam; (2) Praktik dakwah harus menyesuaikan diri dengan perubahan-perubahan yang ada serta kecenderungan baru masyarakat yang muncul di era digital tersebut, terutama dengan melakukan perubahan strategi dan metode dakwah yang lebih efektif; dan (3) Penggunaan media-media teknologi untuk kepentingan dakwah harus mempertimbangkan karakteristik dan keterbatasan media, jenis pengguna, serta kepentingan apa yang ingin dicapai dari penggunaan media tersebut.
