Abstract

The development of effective English language proficiency among Guidance and Counselling students is crucial for their academic success and future professional endeavours. However, there is a gap in the literature concerning the specific language needs and preferences of this student population within the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). This study aims to identify the essential English sub-skills required by Guidance and Counselling students currently enrolled in the second semester of the 2022–2023 academic year, encompassing listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Employing a descriptive quantitative method, data was collected through an online questionnaire administered to 53 students. The findings highlight the importance of listening comprehension skills, with 79.3% recognizing the value of understanding lectures and classmates during English lessons. Additionally, the study emphasizes the significance of proficient speaking abilities for facilitating dialogues, with 66.7% valuing discussions on general and current topics with classmates. Furthermore, the ability to critically analyse internet articles (64.4%) emerged as the most valued reading skill for evidence-based practice and cross-cultural sensitivity. Lastly, the participants most recognized the importance of writing skills for conducting group research in English (56.3%). Overall, the study underscores the multidimensional nature of English language proficiency required for Guidance and Counselling students and the need for an integrated approach to language education that fosters well-rounded competence. By addressing these language needs, educational institutions can better prepare students for the communicative demands of their future roles as counsellors.

Abstract

The rise of social media has significantly changed marketing dynamics, with Instagram influencers now playing a crucial role in shaping consumer perceptions. Despite a growing body of research on social media communication, the specific use of implicature in influencer language remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining how Instagram influencers utilize both conventional and conversational implicature to subtly influence their followers' perceptions and behaviors. The research objective is to analyze the pragmatic strategies employed in influencer posts and assess their impact on follower engagement. A qualitative approach was used, involving a detailed examination of Instagram posts to identify and categorize instances of implicature. The analysis revealed that influencers effectively use conventional implicature, such as phrases like "obsessed with" and "can’t get enough," often enhanced by emojis to imply strong endorsements. Additionally, conversational implicature was found in statements like "Can’t wait to start reading," which suggest positive recommendations through contextual cues and emotional tone. The study concludes that influencers adeptly use these implicature strategies to convey endorsements subtly and engagingly, providing valuable insights for enhancing influencer marketing strategies.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the pragmatic functions of humor employed in memes shared across major social media platforms. Utilizing a qualitative approach grounded in pragmatic analysis, the study explored how users leverage linguistic and visual elements to construct comedic meaning and achieve communicative goals. Drawing from a diverse corpus of popular memes from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit, the analysis identified pragmatic strategies such as incongruity, exaggeration, wordplay, and parody used to create humorous effects. The findings revealed humor's vital roles in facilitating social commentary, subverting dominant narratives, fostering community-building, and negotiating identity. Users deployed sarcasm, hyperbole, and visual metaphors to critique norms, question power structures, and provide platforms for marginalized voices. Furthermore, humor enabled collective processing of shared experiences, fostering camaraderie and mutual understanding. By tapping into contextual factors like intertextual references and shared knowledge, memes resonated with audiences and facilitated the negotiation of collective narratives. The research underscores humor's multifaceted potential in shaping digital discourse, including expression, critique, community formation, and identity construction, highlighting its capacity to empower, connect, and facilitate meaningful dialogue through laughter.

Abstract

This research investigates the culture in the English textbook "When English Rings a Bell" for VII Grade Junior High School, written by Siti Wachidah et al. The present work relied on a content-analyzed documentary study. Furthermore, this research used documentary analysis by categorizing the findings into four types based on theory of Moran (2001) about language learning cultural functions as a tool of content analysis: language for participating in culture, language to describe culture, language to interpret culture, and language to respond to culture. A descriptive analysis was applied to read, identify, and display data by culture. According to the result, all chapters in the book incorporate the four cultural knowing frameworks. Cultural content is used 43 times to refer to description, knowing about; 21 times to refer to cultural participation, knowing how; 19 times to refer to interpretation, knowing why; and 10 times to refer to response, knowing oneself. In conclusion, the textbook is compatible in the cultural context. This is shown by the fact that the textbook uses names, actions, places, and characters from the source culture, i.e., the Indonesian culture.
