Abstract

Aggressive Periodontitis is a form of periodontitis which is characterized with the presence of deep pocket, rapid loss of connective tissue attachment and alveolar bone. The rapid damage is caused by the dysfunction chemotaxis and phagocytosis from neutrophil.Calprotectin is a major cytosolic protein of neutrophils, monocytes and epithelial cells. The calprotectin level in gingival crevicular fluid is useful marker for evaluation the progression of inflammation in periodontitis disease. In this study, we investigated calprotectin level at different periodontal pocket depth from patient with aggressive periodontitis. This research involved twelve subjects who had been diagnosed as suffered from aggressive periodontitis. Their gingival crevicular fluid was taken from different periodontal pocket depths (slight ≤3mm, moderate 4-6mm, severe ≥ 7 mm), using sterile papperpoints. Level of calprotectin in gingival crevicular fluid were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) procedures. The result showed that gingival crevicular fluids calprotectin level increased approximately in proportion to probing depth slight, moderate, and severe (p< 0,05), and showed a significant positive correlation with probing depth (R=0,776, p< 0,05). This research concluded that the calprotectin level in gingival crevicular fluid is positively related to clinical indicators (probing depth) and reflect the degree of gingival inflamation in patient with aggressive periodontitis

Abstract

Background: Periodontal disease is caused by the interaction between pathogenic bacteria and plaque, without the accumulation of plaque, periodontal disease will not appear. Plaque will be visible one to two days if no oral cleaning steps are taken. The combination of antimicrobial therapy such as antibiotics and mouthwash as well as mechanical therapy such as scaling and root plain gives more effective results. However, if done in the long term it will cause resistance. To overcome this, alternative materials are needed that are used to inhibit bacterial growth, one of which is robusta coffee beans. The content of robusta coffee bean extract contains phenolic and flavonoid compounds that function as antibacterials that work by disrupting the function of the cytoplasmic and cytoplasmic membranes of bacteria.Method: In this study, 6 groups were used, namely KN, K-, K+, KP 25%, KP 50%, and KP 75%. The gingivitis model was made with wire using ligation technique for 3 days, then toothpaste was applied, brushing process, and disclosing agent was given, and the plaque index calculation was PHP (Personal Hygiene Performance). The data obtained were then analyzed using the Kruskall-Wallis test followed by the Mann-Whitney test.Result: The Robusta coffee bean extract toothpaste group at a concentration of 75% experienced a significant reduction in plaque compared to the negative control group and the 25% treatment group (p<0.05), but there were no significant differences or had the same ability when compared to the experimental group. 50% treatment group, normal control group and positive control group. Conclusion: The 75% concentration of Robusta coffee bean extract found in toothpaste is proven to be effective in inhibiting the formation of dental plaque.

Abstract

Background: The prevention of gingivitis using chemicals containing antibiotics and chlorhexidine can disrupt the balance of the oral microbiota and have side effects in long-term use. A recent development in the prevention of gingivitis is the use of natural ingredients. Coffee is a natural ingredient that compounds several antibacterial and anti-inflammation properties. Purpose: The study aimed to determine the potential of toothpaste containing Robusta coffee bean extract in reducing gingival inflammation and inhibiting the formation of dental plaque. Methods: Twenty male Rattus norvegicus were divided into four groups, namely the control group and treatment groups (TG) TG25%, TG50%, and TG75%. All groups were fitted with ligature wire on the first left molar to accumulate dental plaque. After the fourth day, the ligature wire was removed, and the TG25%, TG50%, and TG75% groups were brushed once a day using toothpaste containing various concentrations of Robusta coffee extract, while the control group was brushed without using toothpaste. Plaque index, gingival index, and interleukin-1 (IL-1) expression were observed on the fifth day. The data was statistically tested using a one-way analysis of variance and post hoc least significant difference. Results: The statistical test showed that the TG75% group had the lowest value of plaque, gingival index, and IL-1 expression, while the control group had the highest (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Robusta coffee bean extract toothpaste has the potential to reduce gingival inflammation and dental plaque formation in a rat with gingivitis. The most effective concentration of Robusta coffee bean extract toothpaste in reducing gingival inflammation and dental plaque formation was 75%.

Abstract

Periodontitis is caused by bacteria in plaque, namely Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Prevention of periodontal disease can be done by controlling plaque, namely brushing teeth using toothpaste to remove plaque and prevent plaque maturation. Alternative ingredients (herbs) that can be used to make toothpaste are robusta coffee beans which contain caffeine, flavonoids, trigonelin, and chlorogenic acid as antibacterial. The purpose of this study was to analyze the inhibition of toothpaste containing robusta coffee bean extract at concentrations of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, and 50% against the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans. This type of research is experimental laboratory with posttest only control group design. This study was divided into 6 groups, namely positive control (Arabica coffee toothpaste), negative control (placebo paste), Robusta coffee bean extract toothpaste 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, and 50%. Inhibition test using well diffusion method by making holes in the media. The diameter of the inhibition zone was measured using a caliper. The results showed that the control (-) group and the 6.25% group had no inhibitory power against the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans. The robusta coffee bean extract toothpaste at concentrations of the 50% group (18.69 mm) had the greatest inhibition, but K (+) had greater inhibition than the 50% (22.89 mm) group. The conclusion of this study is that the robusta coffee bean extract toothpaste at concentrations of 12.5%, 25%, and 50% had inhibitory power against the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans, but the greatest inhibitory power was at a concentration of 50%.

Abstract

Introduction: During pregnancy, there are changes in hormone levels that can affect the condition of the oral cavity. An increase in hormones leads to gingival changes and a decrease in salivary flow that can affect the hygiene of the oral cavity and periodontal tissues leading to the occurrence of local inflammation and increased plaque accumulation. A sustained increase in plaque accumulation leads to periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the hygiene status of the oral cavity and the health of the periodontal tissue of pregnant women. Method: This type of research is descriptive observational with a total sampling data collection technique involving 51 pregnant women in 8 posyandu Pondokrejo Village, Glantangan Plantation area. Data collection was obtained through the oral hygiene index simplified (OHI-S), Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN), and questionnaires. Results: The results of the OHI-S examination of pregnant women were obtained at 58.8% including moderate criteria, 35.3% bad, and 5.9% good. CPITN results are healthy periodontal 0%; bleeding when probing 0%; calculus and other retentive factors 86.3%; pathological pocket 4-5 mm 11.8%; pathological pocket 6 mm 2%. Pregnant women were most in the age of 26-35 years (58.82%), 3rd trimester (41.18%), last primary education (43.14%), had one-sided chewing habits (56.86%), never visited the dentist (92.16%), never scaling (90.20%), and brushed their teeth every bath (68.63%). Conclusion: The most common oral health status in pregnant women in the glantangan plantation area is moderate. The most common periodontal tissue health status in pregnant women is the condition that it is supragingival or subgingival calculus or there are debris retentive factors such as crowns and restorations that are not adapted properly.
