Abstract

This article is a continuation of the article entitled Comparing Discourses in George W. Bush and Scott Morrison’s Speeches on ‘war on terror’ about the transitivity systems, including types of processes, participant functions, and circumstance elements, are used in these two speech discourses by George W. Bush and Scott Morrison. This research is qualitative research with a descriptive statistical method that presents linguistic analysis findings in speech discourses about the war on terror. This article aims to identify and explain how George W. Bush and Scott Morrison construct the image of terrorism through the language used in their speech discourses. The analysis uses Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and utilizes the framework of transitivity analysis, which identifies the ideational meaning embodied by choice of grammar. This study found that George W. Bush uses material processing to show a negative image of terrorism. In addition to the material process, Scott Morrison also uses a verbal process to convey the image of terrorists. The linguistic features in both speech discourses both depict a negative image of terrorists. The findings also prove that the choice of grammar in the two discourses indirectly uses the speaker’s perspective on terrorists, which influences listeners' opinion.

Abstract

This study explains the discourse structure of antagonism in one of Trump’s political speeches. The analysis also describes the function of antagonistic discourse for Trump’s political purposes against his opponents from the Democratic Party like Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren. CDA is the approach used in this research. The theories of political frontier antagonism from Malmberg, Howarth, and Stravakakis supported by the annihilating dynamics of meaning from O’Dawyer are applied to the data taken from the transcription of Trump’s political speeches. The findings show that Trump utilizes specific nouns modified by adjectives to form a political barrier of antagonism between him against the opponents of the Democratic Party. The structure of discourse found in this study shows that Trump uses antagonism in his political speech to inflict a heavy blow to his opponents’ political image.

Abstract

The Burning Sun scandal provides an important opportunity to study the use of language in criminal behavior and its influence on power structures in illegal networks. This research aims to answer the questions: How is language used in conversations related to this scandal to create and sustain criminal behavior? Using critical discourse analysis (CDA) based on Norman Fairclough's framework, this study analyzed conversations related to the case. Conversational evidence was taken from several trusted Korean news portals and categorized by topics such as prostitution, drug use, gambling, and illegal content dissemination. The analysis showed that the criminal group used language that reflected a well-coordinated structure, where various roles were clearly laid out, despite the rigid communication patterns. The use of imperative and interrogative sentences indicates careful planning and efficient interaction. In addition, this study reveals how social expectations and cultural prejudices are utilized, especially in the exploitation of women. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of text analysis in forensic investigations, providing insights into how language reflects criminal activity and power dynamics. The findings support combining linguistic methods with legal procedures to uncover hidden aspects of criminal organizations and improve the efficiency of law enforcement.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to use Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics viewpoint to uncover the interpersonal meanings that are realized in five selected news articles from The Jakarta Post and TEMPO.CO. This study employed a qualitative method. The data source is two articles from The Jakarta Post and three articles from TEMPO.CO, all under the categories of the 2024 presidential election debate. The data were collected through textual analysis and close reading techniques. The results of this research are as follows: (1) The declarative mood is frequently used across all five articles with 97% for TJP and 99% for TC. The sentences are mostly realized by temporal deicticity, while modality appears in small percentages. (2) Both TJP and TC potray Anies Baswedan positively but with different emphases. TJP highlights Baswedan’s personal attributes and political background. TC emphasizes Baswedan’s political expertise and policy proposals. This distinction in focus reflects the different strategies employed by TJP and TC to shape public perception during the election period. TJP and TC employ similar tenor patterns where they position themselves as equals to their readers and conveying a positive tone in their interactions.
