Abstract

The object of this research is the painting entitled “Kakak dan Adik” by Basuki Abdullah. To obtain theoretical results, the analysis is carried out by applying an aesthetic approach using the aesthetic form theory proposed by DeWitt H. Parker. This analysis is carried out with the aim of knowing the concepts or ideas and meanings that shape the beauty of the object used, the color chosen, and overall messages to be conveyed through this painting. These beauty can be seen through six principles regarding aesthetic forms in works of art, namely: The principle of Organic unity, the priciple of theme, the principle of thematic variation, the principle of balance, the principle of evolution, and the principle of hierarchy. Then from the use of these six principles, it was found that every element in the painting “Kakak dan Adik” indeed contains the values of beauty. That things can be seen from how these elements need each other in explaining the overall meaning of empathy for compassion and humanity. This feeling emerged when the painter was in a frenzy of social change which was the impact of changes in the nation’s economis system at that time.

Abstract

Deaf individuals primarily rely on visual modes of communication such as sign language, which also function as powerful expressions of cultural identity. Despite this, their representation within the arts remains limited, particularly in Indonesia, where access and inclusion are still developing. This study explores how visual art, specifically zine-making, can serve as an inclusive and culturally grounded creative space for the Deaf community, emphasizing the interaction between Deaf identity, sign language, and visual expression. Rooted in a constructivist epistemology, this research is grounded in the belief that knowledge is actively constructed through interaction, experience, and meaning-making. To support this philosophical stance, the study employs three interrelated methodologies: Practice-Led Research to guide the artistic process and creative exploration; Aesthetic Phenomenology to examine the lived and embodied experiences of visual creation and reception; and Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to analyze the relational dynamics among human and non-human actors involved in the zine-making process. Through collaborative artistic engagement with Deaf individuals and reflective documentation of their interactions, the study reveals that zines function not only as artistic outcomes but also as inclusive communication tools that bridge the Deaf and hearing worlds. Visual elements inspired by BISINDO (Indonesian Sign Language) operate as symbolic markers of Deaf identity, while the integration of grapyak, a Javanese cultural value emphasizing hospitality, supports the formation of inclusive aesthetics rooted in local traditions. This research contributes to the field of disability arts by demonstrating how zine-making can serve as a site of cultural dialogue, visual empowerment, and artistic inclusion. It also provides a model for integrating local cultural values into inclusive visual practices.

Abstract

Ukiyo-e literally means "modern painting" or paintings with themes of everyday life. One painter who is very famous for his artistic works of natural landscapes is Katsushika Hokusai. When he was old enough, Hokusai spent it creating a collection of paintings known as Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjûrokkei) or thirty-six views of Mount Fuji. One of his works in the series, entitled Kanagawa-oki Nami Ura or as it is also known as "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa", is very global because the artist succeeded in making his work unique, where he represents the view of large waves accompanied by Mount Fuji using a combination of colors and techniques. unique. Significant Form, according to Clive Bell, is a relationship and combination of lines or colors that aesthetically creates a form. In his book, Clive Bell emphasizes that the quality that makes a work of art exist and without which it does not exist is called significant form. The Great Wave Off Kanagawa includes the theory put forward by Clive Bell, which is that from lines, choosing colors that are aesthetically pleasing can create aesthetic shapes.

Abstract

The challenge of preserving traditional clothing such as jarik, kebaya, sarong, batik, songket, and weaving is increasingly marginalized by modernity and globalization. The main goal of this paper is to design and realize traditional fashion works based on virtual technology that are adaptive and contextual without losing their philosophical meaning and cultural value. The aesthetic approach of the archipelago in this study uses the concept of Sanggit work—a creative principle in traditional art that emphasizes the revitalization and adaptation of cultural values—as a strategy for revitalizing traditional clothing. This research also employs the Design Thinking method in five stages (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test), strengthened by the Sanggit aesthetic approach, which emphasizes cultural revitalization in a contemporary form. The beauty of traditional fashion forms full of religious values is summed up as a concept of beauty that not only preserves visual heritage but also transforms it into ethical values and cultural identity. Five samples of traditional clothing from various regions—Central Java, Minangkabau, Maluku, Osing Banyuwangi, and Dayak Ngaju—formed the basis for the creation of the work. The results of the research, which went through the Sanggit process, produced traditional clothing originally used for ceremonial purposes, revitalized as work clothes and party clothes without eliminating the nuances and symbols of the archipelago's culture.
