Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) comprise a large number of sensor nodes, which are spread out within a region and communicate using wireless links. In some WSN applications, recognizing boundary nodes is important for topology discovery, geographic routing and tracking. In this paper, we study the problem of recognizing the boundary nodes of a WSN. We firstly identify the factors that influence the design of algorithms for boundary detection. Then, we classify the existing work in boundary detection, which is vital for target tracking to detect when the targets enter or leave the sensor field.

Abstract

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are subject to failures. Even though reliable routing protocols for WSNs exist and are well-understood, the physical network topology must ensure that alternate routes with an acceptable length to the sinksare in fact available when failures occur. This requires a sensor network deployment to be planned with an objective of ensuring some measure of robustness in the topology, so that when failures do occur the protocols can continue to offer reliable delivery. To ensure that sensor nodes have sufficient paths, it may be necessary to add a number of additional relay nodes, which do not sense, but only forward data from other nodes. In this paper, we review a range of existing algorithms to deploy relay nodes for fault tolerance. We classify the state-of-the-art relay placement algorithms based on routing structures, connectivity requirements, deployment locations, and fault-tolerant requirements.

Abstract

Abstract

Water quality in public swimming pools affects human health. While changing the water too soon is wasteful, postponing changing the dirty water is not hygiene. In this paper, we propose an Internet of Things-based wireless system to monitor and predict water quality in public swimming pools. Our system utilizes an Arduino Uno, an ESP8266 ESP-01 WiFi module, a DS18B20 temperature sensor, a pH sensor, and a turbidity sensor. We predict the water quality using a data mining prediction model, namely the decision tree Iterative Dichotomiser 3 algorithm. We show by experiment that our sensor node and the wireless monitoring system work correctly. We also show by simulation using Weka that we can get 100% accuracy with a kappa statistical value of 1 and 0% error rate.

Abstract

In urban areas where land for parking is very limited, drivers often waste time, fuel, and emissions circling around without information if unoccupied parking spaces are available or not. In this paper, we design and implement a low-cost wireless system to count the number of cars and motorcycles in a parking lot. The system consists of two sensor devices, which are installed at an entrance gate and an exit gate of a parking lot. Each device has a NodeMCU ESP8266, an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, and an MPU-9266 accelerometer. We use REST API as the web service to connect sensor devices and users, who will access the parking information using a web browser. The C4.5 algorithm is utilized to construct a decision tree to classify detected objects as cars, motorcycles, or people. We show by experiment that our sensor devices and the wireless monitoring system work correctly.

Abstract

The COVID-19 outbreak that has hit the whole world, including Indonesia, has disrupted community activities, making people in various countries have to stay at home to break the COVID-19 chain. One of the activities affected is the teaching and learning activity. The teaching and learning activity, which should be a face-to-face activity, has to be replaced by using an online system. Due to many existing online learning platforms, it is difficult for educators to determine an appropriate online learning platform or application to support the needs of students. This study proposes a recommendation system, which is built using the Elimination Et Choix Traduisant La Realite (ELECTRE) method, to select an online learning platform. This method is able to process the weight of the value of each criterion and alternative used in order to get the final result in the form of an appropriate alternative. The result of this study is a recommendation system that can assist educators to choose an appropriate online learning platform.

Abstract

Bad road conditions may lead to road accidents, especially when drivers are unaware of potholes. The presence of potholes can increase from time to time and may get worse due to road age and bad weather. With the Internet of Things technology, vehicles on the road can be a means of collecting road condition data, such as vibration. The raw vibration data are useful only after they are processed into meaningful information. Information about the condition of roads can help other road users be aware of potholes. This paper proposes an Internet of Things application for road conditions detection. We design and implement a device comprising one NodeMCU ESP8266, one accelerometer gyroscope sensor to detect the existence of potholes based on the amount of detected vibration, and a GPS module to get the information about potholes' locations. For the web service, we use REST API so that users can get real-time potholes' information in the Android application. To cluster potholes based on detected vibration, i.e., deep, medium, and shallow, we implement the k-means clustering algorithm with k = 3. The Android application utilizes a Google map to visualize potholes' locations and the result of clustering on a road map. We use colored pins to indicate the depth of potholes. Deep potholes are shown on the map using red pins, medium potholes using orange pins, and shallow potholes using green pins.
