Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) is increasingly acknowledged as a sustainable method of managing municipal solid waste while simultaneously producing valuable energy. However, the quality and compactness of RDF as a fuel can vary substantially depending on the materials used to produce it. The incorporation of biomass waste and calcium oxide (CaO) significantly influences the pelletizing behavior of biopellets by altering their physical and thermal properties, which in turn determines their effectiveness and suitability as a fuel source. In this study, representative RDF pellets were prepared by blending four primary components: wood sawdust, organic waste, plastic waste, and a fixed proportion of CaO. The investigation focused on assessing the effects of varying biomass waste-to-organic waste ratios on the physicochemical characteristics, densification behavior, and proximate properties of typical RDF pellets. The experimental design included biomass-to-organic waste ratios of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 5:1, and 6:1 while the proportions of plastic (20 wt%) and CaO (5 wt%) were held constant. The findings revealed that optimal RDF performance was achieved at biomass-to-organic waste ratios of 1:1 and 6:1, respectively. The resulting RDF pellets exhibited the following properties: ash content of 7.04 ± 8.78%, moisture content of 8.19 ± 8.82%, volatile matter ranging from 65.11 ± 66.19%, fixed carbon content of 13.95 ± 17.32%, calorific values between 4193 ± 4419 kcal·kg-1, and bulk densities of 0.98 ± 1.18 kg·dm-3. These results highlight the potential of RDF pellets as a promising alternative fuel source for boiler applications.

Abstract

The synthesis of ketones from stearic fatty acids using the fatty acid decarboxylation method to ketones has been carried out to increase the added value of palm oil derivative products. One of the derivative products of palm oil is Crude Palm Oil which can be converted into fatty acids through the triglyceride hydrolysis process. Palm fatty acids are Indonesia's most potentially environmentally friendly raw material. This research aims to synthesize ketones from palm fatty acids using a catalyst. Ketone compounds were synthesized using a solid base catalyst as a double hydroxide layer based on Mg-Al-Cu. Identification of the presence of a C=O ketone group was carried out by testing the Fehling test, Tollens, spectrophotometer (FTIR), and computing the yield. The results showed the success of ketone synthesis using the fatty acid decarboxylation method into ketones through a test of Fehling's on stearic fatty acid ketone products. Meanwhile, in the Tollens test, there wasn't a change in the silver mirror. Furthermore, the spectrophotometer test (FTIR) showed the presence of a C=O bond or a carbonyl group at the peak wave 1707 cm-1. Ketone's synthesis produced was 95.09%.

Abstract

This study aims to develop asbestos-free and environmentally friendly brake pads using apus bamboo powder (Gigantochloa apus). In the experiments, bamboo powder, resin, and catalyst were used as the raw materials and varied to ensure the quality of the prepared brake pads. To analyze the performance of brake pads, the fabricated brake pads are subjected to physicochemical tests (such as microscopic tests and functional group analysis) and mechanical tests (such as puncture tests, compression tests, and friction tests). The research results showed that adjusting the composition of the raw materials allowed a change in the performance of the brake pad, including porosity, morphological structure, and mechanical properties. Indeed, the condition of the low porosity on the inside of the brake pad strategically optimizes the compression strength of the material, making this design ideal for applications that require high resistance to compression loads. This study shows the possibility of apus bamboo powder as an alternative to asbestos in the production of non-asbestos brake pads, offering a safer and environmentally friendly solution as well as giving ideas for supporting current issues in the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Abstract

This paper explains how to calculate and interpret dimensionless numbers in fluid mechanics for chemical engineering applications, focusing on the Reynolds, Mach, Froude, Euler, Power, Stokes, Weber, Capillary, and Cavitation numbers. The first part presents each dimensionless number individually based on its definition, formula, required variables, threshold values, physical meaning, calculation example, interpretation, and handling strategy. The second part presents integrated case examples to show how several dimensionless numbers can be used together to analyze more complex chemical engineering systems. The examples include pipe flow, gas flow, heat exchangers, slurry pipelines, pumps, valves, nozzles, mixing vessels, wastewater aeration basins, aerated fermentation bioreactors, spray drying systems, cyclones, and particle-laden flows. Through these examples, this paper aims to help readers connect dimensionless-number calculations with process behavior, engineering interpretation, and practical decision-making in chemical engineering.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of nanotechnology into chemical engineering education and its implications for future curriculum development. A bibliometric and technological review was conducted using publications from major scientific databases, with standardized datasets and mapped collaboration and keyword networks to identify pedagogical and curricular trends. The findings indicate a steady growth of interdisciplinary research linking nanoscale concepts with process engineering, accompanied by increasing adoption of virtual laboratories, computer simulations, and intelligent tutoring systems. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including uneven faculty preparedness, limited access to advanced instrumentation, and the lack of unified competency frameworks across institutions. These constraints are largely driven by macro-centric teaching traditions, resource limitations, and inconsistent curriculum standards. To address these gaps, the study proposes targeted updates to core and elective courses that emphasize nano-centric content, sustainability, and digital pedagogy. Overall, the paper presents a practical framework aligned with Safe-by-Design principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
