Abstract

There is a strong perception among observers that Southeast Asia is a “second front” in the “global war on terrorism” —after Middle Eastern countries as the “first front”. Others have even suggested that this region is a “haven” for terrorism. Among the countries in the Southeast Asia —Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines— Indonesia has special attention. Not only because Indonesia is a country with the largest Muslim population in the world —according to 2005 statistics, the country is inhabited not less than 208.819.86 soul with the percentage of more than 90 percent Muslim. Moreover, and perhaps more importantly, because of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), which was identified as the al-Qaeda network of localglobal Muslim organization under the command of Osama Bin Laden in Southeast Asia, not only initiated by Muslim Indonesia, but also gain fertile ground for growth. This paper seeks to provide an explanation of terrorism, social and political background of the emergence of terrorism in the Muslim world, and radical Islamist groups that contribute to the emergence of militant attitude among some Muslim countries, including Indonesia. KEY WORDS:Terrorism, Southeast Asia, Jemaah Islamiyah, al-Qaeda network, radical Islamist group, Collective Action Theory.

Abstract

Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur'an (MTQ), which competes for the holy book of Muslims, has received a negative response from some Indonesian Ulama. Because the Qur’an is the authoritative guideline for Muslims whose originality must be maintained. This study aims to be the antithesis of the assumption that MTQ activities are synonymous with disoriented aspects of da'wah. This research is a qualitative field research using an Islamic communication approach. As for access to data from this research, it was obtained by conducting observations, interviews and documentation studies. The research object raised was MTQ activities carried out in Jambi Province. The results of the study concluded that MTQ's preaching had implications for understanding, perception, and changes in people's behavior as an acceleration of the development of the Qur'anic community (Takwin al-Ummah). This research is expected to enrich the body of knowledge in the discipline of da'wah. This means that the da'wah dimension is not only limited to tabligh activities at religious pulpits, but is connected in all social activities of the community.

Abstract

Abstract: Indonesia is the largest democracy in the world, as well as the country with the most followers of Islam. Orientalists consider Islam in Indonesia as Islam that departs from principles that are different from Islam in the Middle East. The persuasive style of Indonesian Islam is due to the process of Islamization that has been carried out. The process of Islamization in the archipelago merged with the local culture. In contrast to the process of Islamization in the Middle East which was dominated by military action. By analyzing various sources, this study concludes that Indonesian Islam is able to contribute to the global world. Indonesian Islam provides an example of the practice of religious pluralism and democracy that go hand in hand. This is because Indonesia made the legality of several religions. In the end, it gave birth to the term Islam Wasatiyah which is the result of the integration of Indonesian Islamic culture. This Islamic movement was initiated by a large Islamic organization in Indonesia. And continue to be introduced in the global realm as a contribution to world civilization.

This study aims to analyze the process of information flow that occurs in information dispute conflicts and to analyze solutions to prevent and handle information dispute conflict problems. This study intends to analyze conflict resolution resolution of public information disputes in Indonesia using communication theory and conflict resolution theory in depth. The methodology in this research is qualitative method using library research method. Based on the results of the research analysis, it was concluded that the process of information flow that occurs in conflicts over public information disputes is hampered due to dissatisfaction from public information applicants with requests for information submitted from public bodies, because there are differences in perception. The solution to conflict prevention is increased awareness of the parties involved regarding rights and obligations related to public information, training and education on public information disclosure, formulation of clear policies on related Standard Operating Procedures and increased internal mediation between public bodies and information applicants. In addition, solutions for handling information dispute conflicts, in addition to mediation and adjudication in accordance with regulations, can be improved through increasing understanding of regulations regarding Public Information Disclosure and increasing the institutional capacity of the Information Commission.

Abstract

The present study aims to examine the phenomenon of the Virtual Public Sphere on social media, specifically focusing on the impact of digital hoaxes within the ILUNI Menwa UI Alumni WhatsApp Group. In the contemporary era of digital information, the proliferation of digital hoaxes, particularly those about the COVID-19 pandemic, has emerged as a noteworthy concern, exerting a discernible influence on public discourse. The primary objective of this study is to examine the effects of digital hoaxes on the Virtual Public Sphere. This research addresses a significant vacuum in the existing literature by integrating three critical theoretical frameworks: New Media Theory, Network Wealth Theory, and Jürgen Habermas' Concept of Virtual Public Spheres. The research inquiry examines the influence of digital hoaxes on communication and social interaction within the Virtual Public Sphere on WhatsApp and their potential ramifications on social integration within virtual groups. The existing body of research exhibits a notable deficiency in comprehending the significance of WhatsApp as a widely utilised social media platform within social communication, particularly regarding the potential risks associated with disseminating digital hoaxes. The research employed a qualitative methodology, specifically in-depth interviews with 30 ILUNI Menwa UI Alumni WhatsApp Group participants. In addition, a content analysis was conducted on the messages inside the group to gain insight into the impact of digital hoaxes on communication dynamics. The study's results indicate that digital hoaxes can impede logical discourse, generate disputes in information, and potentially undermine the integrity of communication on the WhatsApp platform. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the function of social media, specifically WhatsApp, in forming a Virtual Public Sphere. It also examines the potential consequences of digital hoaxes on social integration within virtual communities during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Abstract

This research wants to know the process of political communication in factionalism that occurs in Islamic Parties, namely Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). The approach taken in this research is qualitative with case study research type and interview method as data collection technique. Interviews were conducted with 12 (twelve) resource persons. The theories used in this research are political communication theory, conflict theory, and faction theory. The results showed that there are stages in Prosperous Justice Party factionalism, namely cooperative factionalism, competitive factionalism, and degenerative factionalism. In these three stages, each stage was analyzed in accordance with the elements of political communication, namely sender, encoding, message, channel, decoding, receiver, feedback, and noise. In the cooperative factionalism stage, there are justice and welfare factions. At the competitive factionalism stage, there are conflicts between factions and at the degenerative factionalism stage marked by the birth of a new party, namely the Gelombang Rakyat Indonesia party. The generation system in Prosperous Justice Party as a recipient communication element, palys a role in political communication and strengthens the party’s ability to overcome persistent conflicts and has saved the party from prolonged conflict. In addition to regeneration, PKS leaders and the Majelis Syuro as sender elements or communicators, have a central role in the political communication process. Their role covers various aspects, from formulating party messages to communicating with the public, party members, and other stakeholders.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal the propaganda evidence behind Hasan Tiro's communication reality in spreading the narrative of Islamism in Aceh. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a narrative analysis research strategy. The primary sources of this research are Hasan Tiro's books (writings) and speech recordings, which contain Islamist narratives disseminated to his followers. Based on the results of data analysis, this research produces novelty in developing political communication theory, namely Islamic propaganda communication theory with a da'wah maudhu'i approach. This research demonstrates that Hasan Tiro's political communication is religious narrative propaganda, and Hasan Tiro's propaganda narrative construction has the potential power to indoctrinate his followers with the Free Aceh ideology. The religious narrative constructed by Hasan Tiro encompasses jihadist thematic propositions from the Qur'an. This study has a limitation in that it does not include a netnographic analysis of the development of Hasan Tiro's propaganda on social media.
