Abstract

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of disability that results in mobility limitations and physical changes in patients. Mobility limitations experienced by post-stroke patients not only affect physical functioning but also have psychological impacts, one of which is changes in body image. Altered body perception can influence the adaptation process and quality of life of post-stroke patients. Objective: This study aimed to analyze mobility limitation as a predictor of body image changes in post-stroke patients. Methods: This study employed a quantitative analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of post-stroke patients at Sultan Imanuddin Regional General Hospital, Pangkalan Bun. A purposive sampling technique was used, involving 30 respondents who met the inclusion criteria. Mobility limitation was measured using the Barthel Index, while body image changes were assessed using the Body Image Scale (BIS). Data analysis included univariate and bivariate analyses, as well as regression analysis to determine the role of mobility limitation as a predictor of body image changes. Results: The results showed that mobility limitation was significantly associated with body image changes in post-stroke patients. Higher levels of mobility limitation were associated with greater body image disturbance. Regression analysis indicated that mobility limitation played a predictive role in body image changes among post-stroke patients. Conclusion: Mobility limitation is a predictor of body image changes in post-stroke patients. Therefore, nursing interventions should focus not only on improving physical mobility but also on providing psychological support to help patients adapt to the physical changes they experience.

Abstract

The use of complementary and alternative therapies has increasingly become part of community health practices, particularly in relation to local culture and belief systems. However, community understanding of complementary therapies is not always supported by evidence-based information, which may pose potential risks in their application. In the context of holistic nursing, understanding cultural beliefs and community perspectives is essential to provide safe and comprehensive care. This study aimed to explore community understanding and beliefs regarding the use of complementary therapies from a local cultural perspective. This research employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. Participants were community members who had used complementary therapies and were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews guided by semi-structured questions and analyzed thematically until data saturation was achieved. Data trustworthiness was ensured through member checking and source triangulation. The findings revealed five main themes: community knowledge of complementary therapies derived from intergenerational experiences, cultural beliefs regarding the benefits and safety of complementary therapies, the influence of social environments on decision-making, the use of complementary therapies as a complement to medical treatment, and concerns related to safety and limited access to reliable information. These findings indicate that local culture and social environments play a significant role in shaping community health practices. Therefore, nurses have a strategic role in providing culturally sensitive and evidence-based education to support holistic nursing practice and the safe use of complementary therapies.
