Abstract

This article refers to the lack of literacy regarding the Jegog Jembrana gamelan in terms of musicality. The Jegog Jembrana gamelan has many techniques, one of which is the jurung-jurung technique. The jurung-jurung or transition technique is one of the stylists' interests in creating a new work. Jurung-jurung is one of the Jegog techniques, which means types of transitions in classical Jegog compositions and not all classical Jegog percussion transitions have the Jurung-jurung technique, but they are in accordance with the classical composition of Jegog percussion. The method I use is based on the creation method according to Alma. M Watkins namely exploration, improvisation, and formation. This method is very influential in making this composition because the stages are simple and easy to understand. The relevance of this work will be very useful for the community and artists who want to develop Jegog Jembrana art.

Abstract

The paradigm that was born from a mistake and misunderstanding of something different seemed to create a dividing barrier. Stigma has become a barrier between tradition and contemporary which is essentially related to one another. It takes a different perspective to find a correlation that will straighten out the "misunderstanding" of two things that are assumed to be different and often clashed. Pluminasi is a contemporary music based on the wealth or potential as well as traditional Balinese gamelan musical techniques. The exploration of musical potential in the form of sound wave manipulation with a resonator blockade system and the formation of the Ngorod musical formulation was realized using the creation method by Alma M. Hawkins, as well as the Manipulation composition method specially prepared for Pluminasi as a music composition. The application of this method resulted in three sound wave processing techniques and a musical formulation with a ngorod (swiping) system. As a contemporary musical composition, Pluminasi is worked on by exploring musical potentials and traditional gamelan playing techniques into a novelty where tradition is a strong foundation and not an attempt to destroy tradition.

Abstract

Pancung musical artwork is a Karawitan art creation that is inspired by the phenomenon of natural beauty, especially the gurgling flow of water around the Pancung river which is decorated with rock carvings together with the sacred Beji temple environment. Along the river, which is located on the west part of Banjar Kebon Singapadu, has its own charms such as waterfalls, springs, natural cliffs and those that have been carved by local residents. This area is commonly known by local residents as Beji Pancung. Based on this natural phenomenon, there is an interest for the composer to transform this phenomenon into an innovative musical composition. The media used to support this idea is a set of Gamelan Gong Gede Saih Pitu with the addition of the angklung kocok (shake) instrument. The method of creation in this music uses the creative process approach of Alma M. Hawkins, namely exploration, improvisation, and formation. This composition is based on the Tri Angga structure, namely kawitan, pengawak, and pengecet. Each part in the structure describes the atmosphere and the phenomena of Pancung's natural beauty from upstream to downstream which can be observed through processing patterns in musical elements, such as melody, rhythm, tempo, harmony, and dynamics, as well as patet playing which is rich in additive nuances.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Kakawin Sumanasantaka (Death Because Sumanasa Flowers) is one of sources in searching musical terms from about 22 manuscripts in early Old Javanese literature. This article is part of the research entitled "Tracing The Karawitan Trail in an Ancient Java Script: Studies of Its Forms, Functions and Meanings". The study is intended to clarify the forms and functions of musical instruments during the East Java period around the 10th century. This study uses a historical method, following the stages of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. At the heuristical stage, kakawin Sumanasantaka written by Worsley, P., S. Supomo, M. Fletchert dan T.H. Hunter was found. In 2014, it was also found a work entitled Kakawin Sumanasantaka, Mati Karena Bunga Sumanasa Karya Mpu Monaguna: Kajian Sebuah Puisi Epik Jawa Kuno. A critical analysis of the texts is applied internally through a direct translation and then followed by the historiography process. Forms and functions of musical instruments in Kakawin Sumanasantaka cannot be separated from the functions of musical instruments in the Old Java period, as a means of Javanese ceremonies and accompaniments of secular activities. Keywords: form, function, karawitan, kakawin, Sumanasantaka ABSTRAK Kakawin Sumanasantaka (Mati Karena Bunga Sumanasa) merupakan salah satu sumber penelusuran jejak istilah karawitan dari sekitar 22 naskah kesusastraan berbahasa Jawa Kuno awal. Hunter.

Abstract

This article aims to explore the traditional cultural practices of pasantian reading clubs in facing globality and subjective perceptions of modernity, transformation and change. Pasantian members sing and interpret conventional Balinese texts, thus playing a crucial role in maintaining the artistic and ideological identity of Bali Hindu people. However, engagement in these practices is significantly challenged by rapid sociological changes, which have led to a notable decline in the number of people involved in pasantian. The study focused on understanding how pasantian interact with notions of globality and how these groups can be strengthened to preserve local cultural and ideological values. A qualitative approach employed ethnographic methods such as participant observation and in-depth interviews to explore the practices of pasantian in terms of continuity and change. Findings highlight the importance of practitioners of traditional art forms in negotiating the local-global nexus and suggest strategies for revitalizing pasantian groups.

Abstract

Like other art forms, dance and music serve as expressive media for conveying social messages, including nationalism. However, nationalism in musical rhythms is often less explicit than in verbal or visual arts. This article explores the actualization of the spirit of nationhood in dance and karawitan—traditional Balinese musical compositions—by I Wayan Beratha (1926–2014), a maestro who created over 50 works, including dance pieces and instrumental compositions inspired by the national spirit of their time. Using a qualitative approach, this study gathers data through literature reviews, document analysis, and in-depth interviews. Ricoeur’s hermeneutical theory informs the analysis, positioning texts as a foundation for interpreting their social and ideological contexts. Findings reveal that Beratha’s works embody ideological themes, creative expression, and a deep commitment to national unity. His contributions continue to inspire contemporary artists, encouraging them to preserve and expand upon his legacy.

Abstract

Binaural music, which is characterized by the presentation of two slightly different sound frequencies to each ear, has gained increasing attention owing to its potential positive effects on the brain. Research suggests that binaural beats can influence cognitive and emotional states by modulating brainwave activity. When the brain perceives the difference between the two frequencies, it generates a third "perceived" frequency, known as a binaural beat, which corresponds to specific brainwave states (delta, theta, alpha, beta, or gamma). These brainwave states are linked to various mental and physiological benefits, including relaxation, improved focus, enhanced creativity, reduced anxiety, and better sleep quality. Additionally, studies have indicated that regular exposure to binaural beats may promote neuroplasticity, improve memory retention, and facilitate the brain’s capacity for learning and information processing. This abstract provides a concise overview of how binaural music may serve as a tool to improve mental health, cognitive performance, and emotional well-being, offering a promising avenue for therapeutic and wellness applications. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects and optimal conditions for the impact of binaural music on brain function.

Abstract

Joged Bumbung art, particularly in Buleleng Regency, faces challenges in maintaining its appeal among the community. This is due to the dominance of the classic style, which is considered less attractive to the younger generation, who are more interested in a contemporary version of Joged Bumbung. In this context, this article discusses the creation of a percussion composition, the petegak pejogedan, by Sarwa Luwih through the MBKM Independent Study/Project Program. This work is an innovative effort to revive the classic Joged Bumbung art. The petegak pejogedan, a composition played before the Joged Bumbung performance begins, generally still uses the traditional style from the 1970s. However, there is a trend of decreasing interest in this style, despite its significant historical value in classical Joged Bumbung performances. Through this work, the author aims to create a new composition that combines traditional elements with innovation, such as incorporating the Karinding and Bumbung Genggong musical instruments, which have not previously been found in Joged Bumbung percussion.

Abstract

Chronic stress is a pervasive global health issue linked to psychological and physiological disorders. Music therapy has emerged as a non-invasive, cost-effective intervention with demonstrated benefits in emotional regulation and neurochemical modulation. Among its proposed mechanisms is the stimulation of beta-endorphin production, a neuropeptide associated with pain relief, mood enhancement, and stress reduction. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of instrumental and vocal music therapy on beta-endorphin hormone levels and subjective stress reduction in adults experiencing moderate to high stress A randomized controlled trial was conducted involving 90 participants aged 18–45 with self-reported stress levels above the clinical threshold. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups: instrumental music therapy, vocal music therapy, or a no-intervention control. Each intervention group received 30-minute music therapy sessions three times per week for four weeks. Serum beta-endorphin levels were measured pre- and post-intervention using ELISA assays. Subjective stress was assessed using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Both instrumental and vocal music therapy groups showed significant increases in beta-endorphin levels compared to the control (p < 0.01), alongside marked reductions in PSS scores (p < 0.001). Vocal therapy demonstrated a slightly higher effect size. Instrumental and vocal music therapy significantly enhance beta-endorphin secretion and reduce perceived stress, suggesting their utility as complementary interventions in stress management protocols.
