Abstract

Abstract. This research aims to investigate student engagement in SCL (Student-Centered Learning) activities. The researcher focuses on four dimensions of engagement (cognitive engagement, behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and social engagement). A review of related literature suggests that those four dimensions matter in conducting English learning studies. In addition, student engagement plays a vital role in the teaching and learning process. A qualitative descriptive study had used to observe 35 students. The research utilized a semi-structured interview with four students to give a brief explanation. The data analysis of this research presents four dimensions of engagement in the implementation of Project Based Learning (PjBL) as one of SCL in an English Language study. The result show that they engaged actively with the PjBL model. SCL's approach took part in their desire to adhere to learning activities. Furthermore, teachers as a facilitator make the learning process run dynamically. Accordingly, the findings of this research support the premise that student engagement optimizes learning and maximizes the learning outcome.

Abstract

Teacher feedback plays an important role in improving student’s writing skill. This study aimed to analysis the feedback technique given by the teacher and the reason for its application. This research was a descriptive study designed to provide a detailed explanation of the implementation of feedback technique given by the teacher at SMA N 15 Semarang. In addition, the data was collected using two instruments; document and interview. There were two finding of the research. Firstly, teacher used the minimal marking technique to provide feedback to students. The feedback provided was intended to help students work on their grammatical errors or writing form using symbol to shorten the correction, such as “P” for punctuation, “Cap” for capitalization, “Spell” for spelling, and etc. Secondly, the teacher employed this technique because it was effective and time-saving. Additionally, it also helps students to understand easily their mistakes. However, as the study used a small sample size, the results require further exploration. Therefore, the minimal marking technique could be applied more broadly in EFL classroom to assess its wider effectiveness.

Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates how metacognitive strategies and self-efficacy beliefs affect listening comprehension in eleventh-grade students, addressing the gap between theoretical recommendations and classroom practice.Method – A quantitative path-analysis design was applied to data from 200 students in Cepu, Central Java, Indonesia. Metacognitive strategy use (planning, monitoring, and evaluating) and self-efficacy beliefs were measured via validated questionnaires; listening comprehension was assessed with a standardized test. Findings – Metacognitive strategies significantly predicted listening comprehension (? = 0.38, R² = 0.41, p < 0.01). Self-efficacy had a stronger direct effect (? = 0.52, R² = 0.56, p < 0.001). Path analysis confirmed partial mediation: self-efficacy accounted for 39% of the strategies’ impact (indirect ? = 0.24, p = 0.003). Together, both constructs explained 63.7% of variance in listening scores (R² = 0.637). Research Implications – These results highlight the importance of integrated instruction that combines explicit metacognitive strategy training with confidence-building interventions. Educators should embed scaffolded strategy lessons and targeted feedback into listening curricula to boost both cognitive skills and learner self-belief.
