Abstract

Abstract

The analysis of the mixture of anthouse plant (Myrmecodia pendans) and red pepper vine (Piper ornatum) in H2SO4 1M solution had been studied by weight loss, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Spectrometer test. The Myrmecodia pendans and Piper ornatum were chosen because they contain antioxidants that can inhibit the corrosion rate. The specimen used in this study was API 5L Grade B steel in H2SO4 1M solution. The compositions used in this study were 100% MP : 0% PO, 75% MP : 25% PO, 50% MP : 50% PO, 25% MP : 75% PO, and 0% MP : 100% PO (MP: Myrmecodia pendans, PO: Piper ornatum). FTIR testing result shows that a passive layer was formed by O, H, and N bonds. The weight loss method shows that the highest efficiency of 52.43% was achieved by 50% MP : 50% PO mix composition. Polarization testing shows that the corrosion rate decreased drastically with the addition of 50% MP : 50% PO mix composition, i.e., from 36.32 mpy to 7.93 mpy, due to the passive layer formed on the steel surface. EIS results show the presence of resistance solution (Rs), charge transfer resistance (Rct), and CPE. The adsorption free energy value of the mixture of Myrmecodia pendans and Piper ornatum was −10.02 kJ/mol and it was a physical adsorption.

Abstract

Abstract

Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) is a metal protection system from corrosion using DC current source from outside the system. The positive pole of DC current source is connected to the inert anode while the negative pole of the DC current source connected with metal or cathode to be protected from corrosion attack. ICCP has several advantages such as easy to control the flow of protection, is easy to detect damage to the protection system, and can be used in various types of cathodes and a different environment, and others. Research (Tito, 2002) mentions the advantages of the ICCP system is that it can be designed for applications with a high degree of flexibility because they have wide range of current output capacity. It’s means that current demand can be set either manually or automatically by changing the output voltage in accordance with the needs, another advantage of this system can protect an area that is large enough. The studies regarding the ICCP is progressing towards design in tune with the cathode and the environment, this is due to the cathode and a certain kind of environment will require different designs. This research is designed ICCP on the cathode API 5L grade B with different coatings in different soil moisture conditions. At the cathode with different coating thicknesses showed that the thicker the coating, the current required protection will decrease, while the environmental conditions with different humidity, the higher the soil moisture, the resulting flow needs protection also increased Keywords: corrosion, cathodic protection, impressed current, API 5L.

Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is one of the constituent minerals of bone and teeth, that has been widely used for synthesizing bone graft. Due to the limitation on properties of the hydroxyapatite, it is doping with Magnesium (HAp-Mg). The addition of Chitosan (Chi) was expected to improve the antibacterial properties of HAp-Mg. The present research aims to study the influence of Chitosan with 0, 5, 15, and 25 wt% addition on biocompatibility properties of Chi/HAp-Mg composite. HAp-Mg was synthesized using the sol-gel method; meanwhile, Chi/HAp-Mg composite was manufactured by mixing Chitosan in acetic acid, and HAp-Mg was added into the mixture. The synthesized samples were characterized using XRD and SEM. In vitro antibacterial activities of the Chi/HAp-Mg composite were evaluated against Escherichia coli bacteria. Biocompatibility analysis from antibacterial activity showed that composite with the optimal composition on the addition of 15 wt% Chitosan has the best ability in inhibiting the growth of E. coli bacteria.

Abstract

Most car bodies made for mass production are made from steel or aluminum. Both are strong metals, but steel is cheaper than aluminum and is more commonly used in lower-end cars for a broader consumer range. The weakness of steel compared to aluminum is that it is susceptible to corrosion under certain conditions, and thus it may deteriorate over time without proper care. To prevent corrosion, modern cars are coated with paint to prevent direct contact with the environment. As a second line of protection, a car battery can be connected to the body to create an impressed current cathodic protection circuit. In this study, a steel sample from the car body is connected to an ICCP or impressed current cathodic protection circuit with a small 12v battery and a graphite anode. The specimen's paint layers are removed through grinding and tested in water, wet soil, and open air. The specimens in water and wet soil experienced minimum corrosion during the testing period, while the ones in open air experienced significant corrosion products on the surface. Overall, due to the small specimen size compared to battery output, all specimens experience a case of overprotection of up to -5516 mv in wet soil and -2666 mv in water. Due to limitations, we are unable to do proper measurements in the open-air environment.

Abstract

Corrosion of metals is inevitable. One of the factors that affect corrosion is environmental conditions that contain pollutants like SO2, NO2, and Cl- which are found in many industrial and seaside areas. Surabaya is an area that has 2 types of conditions. In addition, Surabaya is the capital of the province where infrastructure development is running rapidly. Thus, this study maps the level of atmospheric corrosion in five areas in Surabaya by collecting corrosion rate data for 4 months with weight loss method using AISI 1020 Steel and SK5 Steel as test metals. XRD and SEM-EDX tests were conducted to compare the corrosion results. The average corrosion rate of low carbon steel was 0,6561 mpy and high carbon steel was 1,2523 mpy. The results concluded that the high level of atmospheric corrosivity of low carbon steel is in Sukomanunggal, Bulak, Rungkut, Pakal, Krembangan, and Bubutan sub-districts. The medium level is in Tegalsari, Gubeng, Tenggilis Mejoyo, Karang Pilang, Jambangan, Sawahan, and Dukuh Pakis sub-districts. The low level is in Lakarsantri, Mulyorejo, Simokerto, Sambikerep, Genteng, and Wonokromo sub-districts. Meanwhile, high atmospheric corrosivity levels for high carbon steel are in Krembangan, Karang Pilang, Bulak, Tenggilis Mejoyo, Pakal, and Jambangan sub-districts. The medium level is in Rungkut, Sawahan, Bubutan, Wonokromo, Tegalsari, Sukomanunggal, and Lakarsantri sub-districts. The level is in Dukuh Pakis, Genteng, Gubeng, Simokerto, Sambikerep, and Mulyorejo sub-districts. This mapping is based on the level of corrosion in each sub-district which is influenced by the presence of industry and its geographical location.
