Abstract

ABSTRACTCancer is a disease marked by the existence of abnormal growth of cell continuously and uncontroll in an organism body. Benzo(?)pyrene is one of the substances that can cause a cancer. The methanolic extract of Sargassum sp. and Gracillaria sp. has anticancer and antioxidant activity. Other compounds with antioxidant activity is taurine. The aim of this research is to examine the effect from methanolic extract of Sargassum sp. and Gracillaria sp .and also taurine on hepar histopatology of male mice (Mus musculus) induced by benzo(a)pyrene. This research used Completely Randomized Design. 30 male mice were divided into 6 groups of treatments, those were: K1 = (K-), K2= induced by benzo(?)pyrene for 10 days, K3= after induced by benzo(?)pyrene, were given the Sargassum sp. orally with a dose 8mg/mice during 15 days, K4=after induced by benzo(a)pyrene, were given the combination of Sargassum sp. (8mg/mice) and taurine(15,6mg/mice) orally during 15 days, K5= after induced by benzo (?)pyrene, were given the Gracillaria sp.orally with a dose 8mg/mice during 15 days, and K6=after induced by benzo(a)pyrene, were given the combination of Gracillaria sp. (8mg/mice) and taurine (15,6mg/mice) orally during 15 days. Data were analyzed using ANOVA (? = 5%). The result shows that the combination of Sargassum sp. and Gracillaria sp. and taurine can increase the number of erythrocyte , decrease the number of leucocyte and protect the damage of hepar histopatology of male mice (Mus musculus) induced by benzo (?)pyrene. Combination of extract Gracillaria sp. and taurine is the most effective to protect the damage hepar histopatology of male mice(Mus musculus) induced by benzo(? )pyrene.Keywords: male mice,Sargassum sp., Gracillaria sp., taurine, benzo(a)pyrene, hepar

Abstract

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of isoflavone-riched soybean flour with different levels of isoflavone on testosterone level, total Leydig cells, and total spermatogenic cells in the seminiferous tubules of male rats. Diet was given as isonitrogen and isocaloric with 10% of dietary protein from casein. Twenty five male of Sprague Dawley weaning rats (21 days old) were divided into five groups and treated with isoflavone-riched soybean flour by oral administration with different levels (dosages). The treatment was conducted for 2 months. The treatment of isoflavone-riched soybean flour with higher dosage of isoflavone increased the testosterone levels in the serum and the total Leydig cells in the seminiferous tubules of male rats. The optimum dosage of isoflavone was 1.5 mg/day resulted in the highest total spermatogenic cells of rat testes. The treatment isoflavone-riched soybean flour with 1.5 mg isoflavone/day on male rats resulted in the testosteron level of 2.96±0.45 ng/ml, total Leydig cells 70.22±9.34; while the number of spermatogonia, spermatocytes, early spermatids, late spermatids, and total spermatogenic cells were 48.44±4.82, 60.00±3.43, 221.56± 16.12, 164.33±17.94, and 494.33±32.94, respectively.

Abstract

The high exposure to free radicals and glucose blood levels in diabetes potentially damage the body cells and decrease body immune status that is shown by changes in the number of blood cells that can cause complications. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of ethanol extracts of jeruju (holy mangrove) leaves (Acanthus ilicifolius L.) and taurine on hematopoiesis profile by measuring the number of erythrocytes, the number of leukocytes and the leukocytes differential. This research used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) by 5 treatments with 5 repetitions conducted for 14 days. The treatment groups were: K1 negative control, K2 positive control (alloxan induced only), P1 induced by alloxan and given 100% ethanol extract of jeruju leaves at dose of 22.4 mg/bb/day, P2 induced by alloxan and given 50% ethanol extract of jeruju leaves dose of 22.4 mg/bb/day, and P3 induced by alloxan and given taurine dose of 15.6 mg/bb/day. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and followed by LSD test at the 5% level. The results showed that the administration of jeruju and taurin can maintain the number of leukocytes and the number of lymphocyte cells that were close to normal after induced by alloxan. But has no effect in the number of erythrocytes in mice

Abstract

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) is the second most common urology’s disease in Indonesia. This disease occurs due to hyperplasia of stromal cells and epithelial cells of the prostate. The clinical manifestations of this disease consist of obstruction symptoms, irritation symptoms, and post void symptoms. People with BPH often complain about the decrease of their quality of life. One of the factor that Impaired to their quality of life is erectile dysfunction. This study aims to identify the factors that impact the incidence of erectile dysfunction in BPH patients at Yukum Medical Centre Hospital. There were 67 men with bph was obtained from Yukum Medical Centre Hospital in January-September 2021. Data were collected with International Index of Erectile Function-5 questionnaire and medical records. Data were analysis with chi-square test using SPSS and a p-value (<0,05 was considered significant). The result showed that 39 BPH patients had erectile dysfunction. Mean age of BPH patiens with erectile dysfunction was 66,74 (SD±6,51) and mean IIEF-5 scores of the BPH patients was 19,41 (SD±4,23). Age and prostate volume had significant impact with p-value 0,004 and 0,002 respectively. Treatment and medication didn’t have significant impact with p-value 0,193, and 0,856 respectively. Age and prostate volume have a significant impact on the incidence of erectile dysfunction in BPH patients. However, treatment and the type of medication doesn’t impact the risk of incident erectile dysfunction in BPH patients.

Abstract

Thalassemia is a genetic disorder that involves the formation of abnormal hemoglobin. Thalassemia is divided into two main categories namely alpha and beta thalassemia depending on the hemoglobin chain affected. Although some categories of thalassemia are mild and cause only mild anemia and iron deficiency problems in patients, other, more severe forms of thalassemia can result in death. Thalassemia sufferers can get treatment according to the severity of the condition. The degree of ineffective erythropoiesis is known to be associated with clinical severity in individuals with thalassemia. However, the association of ineffective erythropoiesis biomarker levels with different thalassemia genotypes is limited. Studies have explored levels of red blood cells exposed to phosphatidylserine and ineffective erythropoiesis biomarkers in patients with different genotypes. Based on the results of the review, beta thalassemia patients have the highest GDF-15 levels, followed by patients with non-deletal alpha thalassemia. Patients with non-delesional alpha thalassemia showed elevated hemoglobin levels and decreased GDF-15 levels after splenectomy. Patients with beta thalassemia and non-delesional alpha thalassemia had the highest levels of red blood cell exposure to PS and ineffective erythropoiesis biomarkers, which correlated with the clinical severity of thalassemia. Differences in erythropoiesis rates are not effective in thalassemia, which emphasizes the need for different treatment approaches in patients with different thalassemia genotypes.

Abstract

The COVID-19 virus infection some time ago caused a pandemic and became a health problem in the world, including Indonesia. The cause of COVID-19 infection is the SARS-CoV-2 virus which can be detected by Real Time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR). Platelets play a role in inflammation and the pathogenesis of various inflammatory clinical conditions which are also affected by COVID-19 infection, which can change according to the severity of the infection. The purpose of this study was to analyze differences in MPV and PDW in the severity of COVID-19 patients. This type of research is an analytic observational study with a cross sectional research design. Data on platelet index values and the degree of severity were obtained from medical records during the period June to August 2021 from 209 COVID-19 patients treated at RSUD Dr. H. Abdul Moeloek Lampung Province. Statistical tests were carried out using the Kruskal Wallis Annova test, followed by the Mann Whitney test. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the PDW index (p = 0.004) to the degree of severity of COVID-19, while the MPV index was not significantly different to the degree of severity of COVID-19. Excessive production of cytokines and acute phase reactants due to immune response and inflammation for COVID-19 infection, thereby affecting the development of megakaryocytes resulting in changes in the PDW Platelet index, the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 infection is very complex and it is possible that the early stages of the disease do not affect all parameters hematology.

Abstract

Increased levels of free radicals in the body are thought to trigger oxidative stress and cause aging. Biologists state that aging is one of the causes of infertility in men. Squid ink is known to have high antioxidant activity so that it can be used as an alternative treatment. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of knowing the effect of inking squid on the quality and quantity of male individual spermatozoa, which included sperm count, motility, and viability of the spermatozoa of mice experiencing oxidative stress due to D-Galactose induction. This research was conducted experimentally in December 2022 – March 2023 where 24 male mice were divided into 4 groups, namely K, K- (D-Gal 150 mg/kgBB), P1 (D-Gal 150 mg/kgBB + squid ink 40 mL/kgBB), and P2 (D-Gal 150 mg/kgBB + squid ink 100 mL/kgBB). The results showed that squid ink was able to increase the quality and quantity (sperm count, motility, and viability) of mice spermatozoa which had previously decreased due to D-Galactose induction, where the best results for each parameter were shown by P2.

Abstract

In order to increase community participation in preventing the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, education for the community needs to be carried out through counseling. Tanggamus Regency is one of the areas in Lampung where DHF occurred, where from January to June 2024 there were 227 cases. To increase public knowledge in Banjar Agung Udik Village, Pugung District, Tanggamus Regency regarding phytotelmata as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, this counseling was carried out. Counseling was carried out using the pretest, lecture and discussion methods, and practicum. The results of the counseling showed that most participants knew that DBD and malaria were transmitted by mosquitoes, but not all knew the name of the vector species. Participants knew where mosquitoes perched at home and how to avoid mosquito bites. Participants also know mosquito breeding places, but are new to phytotelmata in this counseling. The practicum carried out by participants successfully identified six plant species that were proven to be phytotelmata. Thus, it can be concluded that this counseling has succeeded in providing knowledge to the community about the potential of phytotelmata as a source of mosquito-borne diseases.Keywords: Phytotelmata; Mosquito Borne Diseases; Mosquito Breeding Places; Mosquitoes Bite. Dalam rangka meningkatkan peran serta masyarakat dalam mencegah penyebaran penyakit tukar nyamuk itulah pendidikan kepada masyarakat perlu perlu dilakukan  melalui penyuluhan.  Kabupaten Tanggamus adalah salah satu daerah di Lampung yang kejadian DBD-nya dimana sejak Januari hingga Juni 2024 ada 227 kasus. Untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan masyarakat di Desa Banjar Agung Udik, Kecamatan Pugung, Kabupaten Tanggamus terhadap fitotelmata sebagai tempat perindukan nyamuk maka penyuluhan ini dilakukan. Penyuluhan dilakukan dengan metode pretes,  ceramah dan diskusi, serta praktikum. Hasil penyuluhan didapatkan bahwa  sebagian besar peserta tahu bahwa DBD dan malaria ditularkan nyamuk, tetapi tidak semua tahu nama spesies namuk vektornya. Peserta tahu tempat hinggap nyamuk di rumah dan juga  tahu  cara menghindarkan diri dari gigitan nyamuk. Peserta juga tahu tempat-tempat berkembang biak nyamuk, tetapi baru mengenal fitotelmata dalam penyuluhan ini. Praktikum yang dilakukan peserta berhasil mengidentifikasi enam spesies tumbuhan yang terbukti menjadi fitotelmata.Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penyuluhan ini berhasil memberkan pengetahuan kepada masyarakat tentang potensi fitotelmata sebagai sumber penyebar penyakit tular nyamuk.Kata kunci: Fitotelmata; Penyakit Tular Nyamuk; Tempat Perindukan Nymauk; Gigitan Nyamuk.
