Abstract

On My Block (2018) series, directed by Lauren Iungerich and aired on Netflix in 2018, tells the story of four friends who live in a block in the city of Los Angeles, United States. Chaos often occurs due to the presence of many Hispanic gangsters. Cesar, one of four friends, faces a dilemma between following his family's wishes to become the successor to a gangster named Santos in his area or going to school for a better future with his friends. The dilemma faced by Cesar can be described as a negotiation between filiative and affiliative relations as elaborated by Edward Said (1978). Affiliation is a gift and cannot be changed which is passed down from generation to generation in the family, whereas affiliation is obtained through social interaction with other people. Cesar himself negotiated between filiates and affiliates which in the end, he preferred the filiate to become the head of the Santos gangsters in the block. This film shows a different story plot from other youth films set in slum areas in America which emphasize that success is only shown through education at school. This series instead presents the success achieved by Cesar through his choice as head of the Santos gangsters. However, another character, Monse, who is an African Hispanic woman, decides to go to higher education which is different from Cesar's choice. So, this series shows the construction of the Hispanic-American version of the American Dream which is shown through strong filial ties.

Abstract

This research examines the interconnectedness of language, memory, and literature through Maarten Hidskes' book Di Belanda Tak Seorang Mempercayai Saya: Korban Metode Westerling di Sulawesi Selatan 1946-1947. The study investigates how Hidskes reconstructs his father’s involvement in the 1946 South Sulawesi violence, focusing on the role of language in shaping memory and historical narrative. By analyzing the author’s use of limited personal memories, interviews, letters, and archival documents, this work explores how fragmented historical accounts are pieced together through linguistic resources. The research applies theories from memory studies, particularly the dynamic interplay between memory and language (Echterhoff, 2008) and the concept of "Verbal Overshadowing" (Schooler et al., 1997), to understand how language affects memory retrieval and narrative construction. The study also contextualizes Hidskes' approach within the broader literary tradition of memory studies, comparing his narrative techniques with other works that address the relationship between language, memory, and history. This research sheds light on how language not only represents but also constructs memory, especially in post-conflict societies where historical narratives are often fragmented and contested.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the language styles used by the main characters, Cruella (Estella) and Baroness, in the Cruella movie (2021). The language use of the two main characters is studied because their socioeconomic classes differ, which leads to variances in language styles. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study analyzes the language styles and communication components that influence the movie Cruella. Martin Joos’ (1967, as cited in Chaer and Agustina, 2010) theory is used to analyze the types of language styles, whilst Hymes’ “SPEAKING” (2013) theory is used to analyze communication component. The data collection technique used is the uninvolved conversation observation (simak bebas cakap) to understand the use of language styles directly. According to the study’s findings, there are 65 language styles: 26 casual style, 22 consultative style, 13 formal style, and 4 intimate style. The use of these language styles is heavily influenced by communication components such as setting, participants, and conversation goals. The results show that casual style dominates the conversation, suggesting that language is more than just a communication tool; it is also a political and psychological domain where identities are at stake.

Abstract

Pun is a type of figure of speech that manipulates sound or meaning. In narrative discourse, pun serves not only as humor but also establishes thematic coherence as well as poetic and dramatic effects. Consequently, the use of puns poses a challenge in translation, as it involves different linguistic features and cultural references. This study examined the functions and translation strategies of puns in The Hidden Oracle novel by Rick Riordan. An author, particularly in children’s and young adult (YA), renowned for integrating puns and intertextuality with Greek and Roman mythology in his works. This research employed Delabastita’s (1993, 1996) theories to examine the strategies of pun translation. Additionally, a synthesis of Delabastita’s (1993) and Harding’s (2017) theories was applied to analyze the functions of puns. Using the descriptive qualitative method, this article compares the source text and the target text to explore how the pun is preserved, shifted, or lost, as well as its impact on its function. Of the 31 data, 17 of them serve to add thematic coherence and humor simultaneously. In its translation, however, over half of the puns are not preserved but rendered through non-puns, related rhetorical devices, and many more. These findings show that the translation of The Hidden Oracle novel tends to prioritize rendering the main message over style. Thus, establishing that the interconnected aspects of the functions of puns in their translation influence the translated novel’s overall coherence and narrative effects, such as humor, tension and attention, and taboo.

Abstract

This article discusses the establishment of a waste management and climate awareness program ("RESIK") as an effort to create a disaster-resilient village in Bojong Kulur. The program addresses issues such as recurring floods, low public awareness of waste management, and the impending closure of the Bantargebang landfill. The objective of this service is to increase public awareness of climate issues, improve waste management capabilities, create environmentally friendly settlements, and establish a circular management system. The method used is mentoring and technology implementation for Youth Groups, PKK, Women Farmers Groups, and Waste Bank Managers. The results achieved were the implementation of interventions in the form of a digital waste bank, an IoT-based dropbox, and a plastic shredding machine. This program highlights the importance of community involvement and pentahelix collaboration to achieve sustainable economic benefits through waste processing.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the cultural communication strategies used by teachers in shaping the characters of cageur, bageur, and pinter among high school students in Cianjur Regency. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method in a public high school that integrates Sundanese cultural values into its character education program. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with teachers, school leaders, and students, classroom and school cultural activity observations, and documentation studies of character education programs and policies. The findings indicate that teachers apply cultural communication strategies through role modeling, the use of Sundanese language and local expressions, culturally relevant narratives aligned with students’ lives, and dialogic and participatory communication in the classroom. These strategies are strengthened by school culture and regional policies that emphasize the philosophies of cageur, bageur, pinter, and Pancawaluya. This facilitates the internalization of healthy living, good morals, and holistic intelligence among students. The study concludes that teachers act as cultural communicators and character-building agents who bridge Sundanese local wisdom with the demands of 21st-century education.
