INQUIRY BASED TEACHING IN WRITING CLASSROOM: THE EFFECTIVENESS TO THE STUDENTS’ CREATIVITY Sari, Fitria Wulan

Abstract

The main objectives of the research are to find out whether (1) Inquiry Based Teaching is more effective than Guided Writing to teach writing skill; (2) Students having high creativity have better writing skill than those having low creativity; and (3) there is any interaction between teaching methods and students? creativity in teaching writing skill for students. The research applied in this research was an experimental research. The teaching methods are Inquiry Based Teaching and Guided Writing. Creativity as the attributive variable was divided into high creativity and low creativity. The population of the research was the students of junior high school consisting of 176 students. The samples of this research were the class 8B as experimental class and 8A as control class that consisted of 22 students in each class. The result of data analysis shows that; (1) Inquiry Based Teaching is more effective than Guided Writing to teach writing skill; (2) Students having high creativity have better writing skill than those having low creativity; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students? creativity to teach writing skill for the students. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that Inquiry Based Teaching is an effective method to teach writing skill, and the effectiveness is affected by the degree of students? creativity

Abstract

This article focuses on describing the use of Mind Map to increase students’ vocabulary mastery. The objective of this research was to improve students’ vocabulary mastery by applying Mind Map. It was descriptive qualitative research. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consists of Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. This research was managed in two cycles. The participants of this research were first semester students in one of the universities in North Maluku. The instruments used in this research were observation and test. From the data collection, it can be drawn a conclusion that the use of mind map was able to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. After analyzing the data sources, it was found that there was improvement score from the pre-test and post-test. The mean score of pre-test was 54, 91 and the post-test was 83, 43. Thus, it can be concluded that Mind Map is an appropriate method to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Listening is one of the skills in English which should be mastered well by the person who learns it. As the foreign language, it is not easy for the Indonesian students to master this skill. Moreover during the lockdown period of Covid-19 epoch when the students have distance language learning as the government policy, the process of teaching and learning especially teaching listening becomes more difficult. The use of tool is so important to support the process of teaching and learning in this situation. WhatsApp is chosen as the tool in the process of teaching and learning. This study aims to explore the English undergraduate students’ perception of the utilizing WhatsApp as a tool of teaching listening to assist distance language learning. The data were analyzed using questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the research findings show that students have positive perception towards the use of WhatsApp for learning listening. It is an easy, fun, pleasant and good tool to use in the teaching learning process. It makes the students enthusiasm to learn and can help them to get the listening audio material which they must listen easily.

Abstract

Novel The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly adalah Novel yang berisi tentang kekuatan sebuah mimpi dan perjuangan hidup yang keras dari seekor ayam petelur untuk mendapatkan kebebasan. Kisah tokoh utama yang bernama Daun merupakan seekor ayam petelur yang berjuang untuk tetap bertahan hidup untuk mewujudkan impiannya menjadi seorang Ibu yang dapat mengerami telur dan memiliki anak ayam. Peneliti memilih novel The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly karena tertarik dengan penyajian kisah perjalanan hidup berbeda pada umumnya, yaitu dari seekor ayam petelur. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah selain mengetahui proses perjalanan hidup yang dijalani tokoh utama, peneliti juga tertarik untuk meneliti karakteristik tokoh utama Daun dalam novel The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kalitatif, sedangkan teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah teknik kepustakaan dan teknik simak catat. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tokoh utama Daun, memiliki 5 karakter, yaitu optimis, penyayang, berani, hormat dan protektif.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the teachers strategies used in teaching speaking. This research took place at SMK Negeri 1 Kota Ternate. This research used a qualitative descriptive method to describe the teachers strategy in teaching speaking. The subjects in this research were 3 English Teachers at SMK Negeri 1 Kota Ternate in classes X and XI, 2 teachers from class X, and 1 teacher from class XI. The data were collected by classroom observation, interview, and documentation. The result of this research showed that every teacher used a strategy in teaching speaking according to the teaching material, classroom environment, and student needs. The strategies that are often used by teachers at SMK Negeri 1 Kota Ternate are live listening, task repetition, presentation and talks, discussion, and conversations and chats. While the strategies that are rarely used are recording and transcripts, noticing-gap-activity, drilling and chanting, writing tasks, and debates and for the unused strategy are stories, jokes, anecdotes, drama, role-play, and simulation, and speaking outside class.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the understanding of medical students about English medical terminology. This study used descriptive quanitative method. There were 21 medical students at Khairun Ternate University who were involved in this research. By using purposive sampling technique. . Data was collected by using a test and questioner via google form. Of the 21 students, only 4 students got good grades, the other 17 were very low. The results of this study indicate the average value of students is 49.7 in the poor category.

Abstract

Vocabulary is crucial in all language acquisitions, whether the first language, second language or foreign language. Due to the importance of vocabulary, a comprehensive language learning strategy is needed. The present study investigates the various vocabulary learning strategies used by undergraduate Indonesian students majoring English Language Education Study Programin learning new words. Descriptive qualitative was applied as a research method to find out the objective of the research. The techniques of data collection used in this research were observation and questionnaire. The data analysis used in this research was the interactive model analysis from Miles and Huberman that consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results showed that there were seventeen strategies used by the students in learning vocabulary.

Abstract

Beberapa masalah yang muncul dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang berasal dari siswa, guru, strategi, media, atau fasilitas yang digunakan dalam proses belajar mengajar. Guru bahasa Inggris menggunakan teknik pengajaran yang monoton untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris; mereka cenderung untuk fokus pada isi pengajaran mereka daripada bagaimana mereka menyampaikan materi mereka. Dibutuhkan media untuk mendukung teknik guru. Berdasarkan keadaan tersebut peneliti tertarik untuk melakukan studi literatur tentang penerapan media youtube dalam pembelajaran keterampilan berbahasa bagi siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif berupa studi kepustakaan. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode dokumentasi. Metode dokumentasi digunakan karena sumber data berasal dari beberapa artikel di jurnal yang membahas tentang penggunaan video youtube dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan teknik membaca dan mencatat. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan, dalam penelitian ini mengadopsi teori Miles dan Huberman yang meliputi tahapan reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa YouTube adalah alat yang efektif yang dapat membantu siswa memahami bahasa Inggris. Para siswa juga memiliki pandangan positif terhadap penggunaan YouTube dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Sebagian besar siswa berpikir bahwa YouTube membantu mereka meningkatkan pemahaman bahasa Inggris mereka. Mereka setuju bahwa mengintegrasikan video YouTube sebagai bagian dari kegiatan kelas memotivasi mereka untuk belajar serta meningkatkan minat mereka.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to discuss the effectiveness of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method in teaching imperative sentences for grade 7 students of SMP Negeri 6 Kota Ternate. This research was experimental research. The design of this research used a pre-experiment and the population in this research were students of class 7A SMP N 6 Kota Ternate with a total population of 186 students. Therefore, the researcher used convenience sampling where the authors 30 students as a sample in this research. The instruments used to collect data were pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The results of the average pre-test score of 17.66 and the average post-test score of 82.66.  In addition, the results of the t-test received are greater than the t-table, where the t-test is 33. 163 and the t-table are significantly 0.05 = 1. 699 with df = 29 so there is a significant development of students’ vocabulary (imperative sentence) and the ability to use the Total Physical Response method because it can improve grammar and vocabulary skills, especially imperative sentence.
