Abstract

Electrokinetics is one of soft ground improvement methods to improve its bearing capacity. The objective of this research is to investigate the increase of friction and end bearing resistance of an embedded instrumented model pile in marine clay after electrokinetics treatment. The initial geotechnical properties of soil surrounding the pile foundation is obtained by several soil laboratory tests. For pile bearing capacity analysis, friction and end bearing resistance of pile was measured by load cell measuring device, while un-drained shear strength analysis was measured by vane shear test. The result of this research showed that after 24 hours electrokinetics treatment, the un-drained shear strength increased closer to the pile, and the bearing capacity of pile increased 14 times.

Abstract

The high water content in marine clays could loosen the bond of soil particles, resulting in low bearing capacity and high compressibility of the soil. Excessive settlements could happened to the structures built on it. An electrokinetic process was attempted to reduce the high water content of the marine clay. An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effect of electrokinetic on marine clay improvement. This study focused on the use of electrokinetic to enhance the soil bearing capacity of marine clay by improving index properties of the marine clay. The result of this research was obtained by doing several analyses on water content, pH value, and soil particles of soil sample located between cathode and anode. Based on the results from laboratory testing, it can be concluded that electrokinetic process decreased the water content and pH value of soil surrounding the anode. Also, soil particles surrounding the anode became in close proximity. This indicated that as it became closer to the anode, soil became denser.

Abstract

Abstract

The need for housing in a metropolitan city such as Surabaya will increase with time.  These needs can be met by building new houses or renovating. Sometimes the construction and renovation of houses will more or less have an environmental impact on the surrounding buildings.  The case study in this paper aims to increase public awareness of the impact of construction project on the surrounding buildings. The case study was conducted by doing field observations on the location of a residential house construction which had an impact on the adjacent houses, located on the right and left side. It was obtained that the damage to the adjacent houses was caused by the demolition of the old building, the addition of loads, and the process of compaction of the backfill.  Repair and strengthening of buildings must be carried out to restore the function of the building and prevent further damage. Unfortunately, repairing the building requires significant additional costs and causes the construction time to be longer.

Abstract

Abstract

The use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), for both strengthening material and anode for Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system, is being investigated.  The focus of this study is to develop the epoxy that has good bond strength and electrical conductivity. Graphite powder is used as conductive pigments with percentage ranges from 7.5% to 17.5%.  All specimens were partially submerged in 5% NaCl solution and induced with electrical current of 10 mA/m2 and 20 mA/m2 for 30 days. An average potential increase of 200 mV was recorded using half cell potential test. The application of 30 days ICCP up to current density of 20 mA/m2 did not affect the bond strength significantly and still complies with ACI recommendation. However, graphite content of more than 15% are found to be not workable and the bond strength is greatly reduced to less than 1 MPa This study concluded that the recommended graphite powder content shall be in the range of 10% to 15%.

Abstract

Steep slope conditions combined with the influence of vibrations can lead to landslides. Therefore, slope stability is crucial in highland areas. This study aims to analyze the effect of vibrations on the stability of sandy clay slopes with varying sand and clay compositions of 70%:30%, 60%:40%, and 50%:50%, as well as slope angles of 45° and 60°. The research began with soil characterization tests and a Proctor test. Subsequently, vibration simulations were conducted using a vibrator machine. The results showed that variations in clay content and slope angle influence the landslide patterns that occur when the slope is subjected to vibrations. The higher the sand content, the greater the potential for landslides due to decreased soil stability under vibration. Additionally, the steeper the slope, the higher the risk of landslides.
