Abstract

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) approach to learning plays an important role in improving teacher competency, learning innovation, and technology use skills. However, the results of an initial survey at Sekolah Indonesia Makkah showed that 44.12% of teachers faced challenges in the form of a lack of training and understanding related to STEM integration. This study involved 34 teachers and aimed to improve their ability to implement STEM-based learning through the Collaborative Professional Development (CPD) approach. The results showed that teachers who participated in CPD activities experienced a significant increase in their understanding and readiness to implement STEM. In addition, teachers began to realize the benefits of STEM learning in developing students' affective, cognitive, and psychomotor aspects, as well as its potential as a means of career guidance. As many as 52.94% of teachers stated that they strongly believed that STEM was important to implement, and 58.82% considered the CPD program to be continued. This study recommends that CPD training be carried out continuously with more applicable and contextual materials. Strengthening collaboration between teachers and the integration of STEM-based curriculum is also needed to support the sustainability and effectiveness of the program in the long term.

Abstract

Nata is a fermented product made from cellulose and synthesized by Acetobacter xylinum, offering potential as a functional food rich in dietary fiber. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of varying volumes of molasses and mung bean sprout (Phaseolus radiatus L.) broth as sources of carbon and nitrogen on the crude fiber content of nata produced from watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) rind waste. Each fermentation medium had a total volume of 1000 mL and included the following treatments: N1 (5% molasses and 5% sprout broth), N2 (10% molasses and 10% sprout broth), N3 (15% molasses and 15% sprout broth), and N0 (control), which used coconut water, granulated sugar, and food grade urea. Fermentation was carried out under static conditions at room temperature for 10 days, and the resulting nata was analyzed for crude fiber content using the gravimetric method. The results showed that variations in the volumes of molasses and sprout broth significantly influenced the crude fiber content of nata (p < 0.05). The Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) further confirmed statistically significant differences among treatments. Treatment N2 produced the highest crude fiber content (8.05 ± 0.02%), while the control (N0) yielded the lowest value (5.11 ± 0.01%). The absence of nata formation in N3 indicated substrate saturation and nutritional imbalance. These findings emphasize the importance of carbon and nitrogen balance in optimizing nata production from agroindustrial waste. Treatment N2 was identified as the most effective in enhancing both crude fiber content and overall nata quality.

Abstract

The 21st century requires science process skills, yet class 7-B students at UPT SMPN 10 Gresik have not engaged in learning activities that enhance these skills. This is a classroom research study that aims to improve students' science process skills, especially observing, predicting, interpreting, concluding, and communicating, by applying a problem-based learning model. We identified the classroom problem and the plan for the research, collected data by implementing a problem-based learning model, and analyzed and interpreted the data. If the students' science process skills have not reached the expected level, we must reflect and revise the plan. Student worksheets to facilitate problem-based learning in the study. The research sample comprised 32 students in class 7-B UPT SMPN 10 Gresik. We collect data using pretest and posttest science process skills. We analyzed and classified the obtained data using the guidelines for categorizing science process skills. The results showed that the average percentage of students' science process skills in the pre-cycle was 16.0 in the very poor category. In cycle II, the average percentage of science process skills rose to 39.1 in the poor category. Then, in cycle II, the average percentage of students' science process skills was 77.8 in the good category. These findings indicated that the problem-based learning model can improve science process skills. So, science learning activities should use a problem-based learning model so teachers can practice their students’ science process skills.

Abstract

Tempeh and tofu are widely consumed by Indonesians and easily made using simple tools and method, thus numerous home industries producing are emerging. However, soybean processing in these industries produces high volume of wastewater. This study provides a simple wastewater treatment instrument design that could be used by soybean-based home industries by applying a series of physical, chemical, and biological treatment. Physical treatment was performed by filtration, chemical by addition of alum salts, while biological treatment was done by supplementing with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from leftover container of fermented milk. Wastewater was recorded by its parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen/DO, biological oxygen demand/BOD, turbidity) at every phase of treatment after incubation for two various of periods; 1 hour and 5 days. Results showed that wastewater treated using instrument design had changes in all of its parameters observed during the course of treatment.  Wastewater treated in all phase of instrument incubated for 1 hour showed parameters approaching wastewater quality standards, thus it was safer to be disposed to environment compared to wastewater incubated for 5 days. Wastewater treatment as designed in the current study can be applied by soybean-based home industries with short incubation time to remediate wastewater produced during soybean processing before disposal.

Abstract

ARTICLE HIGLIGHTS- Fermetodege as a source of cellulolytic bacteria that degrade cellulosic materials.- Enhances ruminant feed by improving palatability and digestibility.- Utilizes water hyacinth, reducing invasive plant spread and supporting ecosystems.- Bioprospecting reveals new bacteria for effective fermentation starter development.ABSTRACTFermetodege is a name of fermented ruminant feed produced from free heavy metals water hyacinth, rice bran, and corn cobs. Its quality, as well as the fermentation process, are affected by numerous factors, such as the diversity, evenness, and dominance of indigenous cellulolytic bacterial species. A proper understanding of these influential factors is needed to improve the quality of the fermented feed. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the diversity, evenness, and dominance of cellulolytic bacteria isolated from fermetodege. The cellulolytic activity of the isolates was tested by observing their growth on the carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) media. Isolates with cellulolytic activity formed a clear zone after the colonies were soaked with 0.1% Congo red and rinsed with 1 M NaCl. The Shannon-Weiner's diversity and evenness indexes, as well as Simpson's species dominance, were then calculated. The result showed that the Shannon-Weiner’s diversity index ranged from 0.6849 to 1.8173, and it was categorized as medium. The evenness index was between 0.7778 and 0.9983, which indicates a stable distribution of species. Meanwhile, the Simpson’s species dominance ranged from 0.1835 to 0.5082, which implies that none of the species was dominant. These results show that fermetodege is potentially a source of bacterial isolates and can be used as a fermentation consortium starter.
