Abstract

The EFL teaching is challenging. Moreover, teaching English towards the hearing-impaired students (hereafter HIS) must have its own uniqueness because of the greater challenges. The exploration in this phenomenological study goes with the teacher?s lived experience in teaching English especially vocabulary towards the HIS. Telling narratively of the teacher?s lived experience in teaching English towards the HIS is the purpose of this research. The descriptions go on the teacher?s understanding, belief, feeling, intention, and action which are elaborated by the purpose of the teaching, the materials, the technique, and the achievement. According to the findings, the purposes of teaching vocabulary are to enrich their vocabulary mastery and to proof that the HIS can learn language. The teacher can only teach simple words because it takes time and lots of efforts. Visualization is the best teaching technique ever for the HIS because it helps better memorization since it gives emotional feeling for them. In conclusion, the HIS can learn simple vocabulary. Visualization helps them memorizing words better.

Abstract

Based on the short story The Killers by Ernest Hemingway. This research aims to find out the characters and characterizations in the short story The Killers. And knowing the relationship between characters and characterizations and the strengths and weaknesses of the short story “The Killers”. This research is a descriptive qualitative research whose data source is the short story The Killers. The data collection technique is done with the simak technique by observing and taking notes on the dialog used by each character of the short story to determine the characterization of each character. The data collected is analyzed by approaching Edgar V. Robert's theory to analyze the character and characterization in the short story The Killers through what the character says about himself, what the character himself does, what other characters say about the analyzed character, and what the author says about the analyzed character. The results of this study show that the main character has 7 characters with different characters and characteristics. There are 3 types of characters in it, namely protagonists, antagonists, and tritagonists. These characters show themselves through the dialog used by each character. The contribution shown by the researcher is that this research can help in finding the strengths and weaknesses of the short story The Killers through characters and characterizations, to provide recommendations to readers to be selective in choosing age-appropriate reading.

Abstract

Abstrak: Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan pemandu wisata melalui pemberdayaan masyarakat.  Hal ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas kinerja masyarakat di wisata Air Merah Mungguk. Desa Mungguk memiliki obyek wisata Air Merah, namun masih mengalami kesulitan dalam hal memandu wisatawan yang datang. Hal ini dikarenakan masih minimnya pengetahuan masyarakat tentang memandu wisata. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini adalah survey, sosialisasi, pelatihan, monitoring dan evaluasi. Bentuk-bentuk pemberdayaan masyarakat melibatkan partisipasi masyarakat mulai dari proses perencanaan dan pelaksanaan kegiatan. Program-program yang telah dilaksanakan meliputi sosialisasi sapta pesona dan pelatihan pemandu wisata. Dari kegiatan monitoring dan evaluasi terlihat bahwa setelah mengikuti pelatihan-pelatihan yang dilakukan, pemahaman warga tentang cara memandu wisatawan meningkat.  Pemberdayaan masyarakat melalui pelatihan pemandu wisata ini meningkatkan kualitas kinerja pemandu wisata di wisata Air Merah desa Mungguk.Abstract: This service activity aims to provide tour guide training through community empowerment. This aims to improve the quality of community performance in Air Merah Mungguk tourism. Mungguk Village has Air Merah tourist attraction, but it still has difficulties in guiding tourists who come. This is due to the lack of public knowledge about guiding tours. The approach used in this activity is survey, outreach, training, monitoring and evaluation. Forms of community empowerment involve community participation starting from the planning process and implementing activities. The programs that have been implemented include socialization of Sapta Pesona and tour guide training. From the monitoring and evaluation activities, it can be seen that after participating in the trainings carried out, the residents' understanding of how to guide tourists has increased. The empowerment of the community through tour guide training can improve the quality of the performance of tour guides in Air Merah, Mungguk village.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perception of teachers and students towards online learning in class 10 Mia SMA Maniamas Ngabang. The writers were using descriptive qualitative as a method in this research. The subjects were 2 English teachers and 35 students in the academic year of 2021/2022. Data sources in this research were: source (informants), place, and document. The data collection techniques used were questionnaire and interview, while data analysis techniques were data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusion. The results of this research were: (1) The learning process was less than optimal, teachers got difficulty in assessing students attitudes, lack of learning media facilities, and unstable internet networks. (2) From the number of 10th grade students at SMA Maniamas Ngabang showed that 11 students were not active in participating the learning process, while 24 students were active in participating the learning. Students were unable to understand learning materials and assignments due to limited space and time, unstable internet network, limited internet quota, and there were some students who did not have android phone. (3) Online learning could make students more independent in learning, but sometime they could not learn without direct role from their teacher.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' understanding toward online learning usingGoogle Classroomduring the PandemicCovid-19at SMA Pelita Ngabang. Beside that, the researchers conducted this research to find out the obstacles that students face during online learningusingGoogle Classroom. This research is a qualitative descriptive which conducted in tenth grade students of SMA Pelita Ngabang. Data collection techniques used were closed questionnaire, interview, and documentation related to the sources related to this research. The results of the questionnaire and the results of interview with students can be concluded that currently there were many students of tenth grade students at SMA Pelita Ngabang understand how to useGoogle Classroomalthough there were some students who did not understand how to useGoogle Classroomduring the pandemicCovid-19.The process of online learning by using mediaGoogle Classroomwas very appropriate to be applied during the pandemicCovid-19. Nevertheless, there were some obstacles that students often face when participating in the online learning processbecause of limited facilities such asAndroid phones. In addition, they often change their email passwords that could make them difficult to login because they forgot their email passwords. Regarding the network that was not good during the online learning processusingGoogle Classroom wasalso became an obstacle in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Pengelolaan sampah adalah salah satu tantangan yang dihadapi oleh pengelola perkotaan di seluruh dunia, termasuk Indonesia. Karena ekonomi berkembang, taraf kehidupan penduduk juga meningkat.  Seperti yang terjadi di BTN Bisma, yang terletak di kecamatan Ngabang kabupaten Landak, hanya ada satu bak sampah besar berbentuk bak truk yang digunakan setiap minggu. Permasalahan penanganan sampah yang masih kurang serius ini yang menjadikan tim pengabdi melakukan pengabdian ini.  Dengan mempertimbangkan situasi ini, kelompok pengabdi memutuskan untuk mengolah sampah rumah tangga warga BTN Bisma untuk digunakan sebagai pupuk organik cair (POC). Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk memanfaatkan sampah rumah tangga diolah menjadi pupuk organik cair.  Mahasiswa Universitas Katolik Santo Agustinus Hippo, Kelompok Tani Bisma Asri, dan ibu-ibu warga BTN Bisma Residence melakukan kegiatan ini dalam kerja sama dengan Dinas Pertanian, Perikanan dan Ketahanan Pangan kabupaten Landak serta Himpunan Kerukunan Tani Indonesia. Secara umum, tujuan dari pengabdian ini adalah: (1) meningkatkan keterampilan dan pengetahuan mitra dengan cara memberikan pelatihan tentang cara mengubah sampah organik menjadi pupuk cair organik; dan (2) menyediakan sarana pembuatan pupuk organik cair dan mitra mampu memproduksi pupuk organik cair secara mandiri. Hasil pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) pengetahuan mitra meningkat sebesar 57, 9% dibuktikan hasil pre test dan post test. (2) Keterampilan mitra meningkat 100% dibuktikan dengan hasil observasi. (3) Tersedianya sarana pembuatan POC dan berdasarkan hasil pendampingan selama dua bulan dan dua minggu dan hasil evaluasi, mitra mampu memproduksi POC secara mandiri

Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of compound words and examine how their meanings are formed in the lyrics of the Encanto movie soundtrack. The analysis is based on Lieber’s (2009) theory for morphological classification, which divides compounds into endocentric and exocentric types, and Saeed’s (2016) theory for semantic classification, which distinguishes between transparent and opaque meanings. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with documentation as the data collection technique. The steps include listening to the songs, checking the lyrics, identifying compound words, and classifying them based on their structure and meaning. The results show a total of 30 compound words: 24 (80%) are endocentric and 6 (20%) are exocentric; 23 (77%) have transparent meanings, while 7 (23%) are opaque. This study highlights the structural and semantic features of compound words found in song lyrics and shows how linguistic elements can enrich musical expression

Abstract

Dalam memahami pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris khususnya Basic English for Tourism mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Katolik Santo Agustinus Hippo mengalami kesulitan terutama dalam penggunaan Bahasa Inggris untuk praktik di dunia pariwisata. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan Praktisi Mengajar kali ini adalah ceramah, tanya jawab, penggunaan gambar dan video, serta bermain peran. Sedangkan untuk evaluasinya dilakukan dengan pengisian kuesioner. Kegiatan Praktisi Mengajar ini berlangsung selama tiga bulan mulai dari Sosialisasi, pendaftaran, pengumuman dan pelaksanaan Praktisi Mengajar selama tiga bulan, dimulai pada tanggal 3 Oktober sd 18 Desember 2024. Dari hasil evaluasi yang didapat dari kegiatan Praktisi Mengajar ini dari 26 mahasiswa mengatakan bahwa kegiatan Praktisi Mengajar ini sangat bermanfaat untuk menambah pengetahuan mereka terutama dalam mata kuliah English for Tourism. 33,3% mahasiswa merasa puas dan 66,7% merasa sangat puas mengikuti kegiatan Praktisi Mengajar ini. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa semua mahasiswa mendapatkan manfaat dari kegiatan ini.

Abstract

Rapid advancements in science and technology over the past decade have greatly influenced the development of teaching materials. This accelerated progress has provided significant support to educators in enhancing the quality of both online and offline learning experiences. This study aims to develop a local wisdom-based book creator media while assessing its validity, effectiveness, and innovativeness.The research methodology employed a research and development (R&D) approach, specifically following the procedure outlined by Borg and Gall, which consists of 10 stages. However, this study focused on 8 key stages within the development process. The findings of this research indicate that the local wisdom-based book creator media demonstrate a high level of feasibility. A questionnaire was employed as the primary data collection technique to evaluate the feasibility of the media book creator. Expert assessments were obtained from media experts, material experts, and IT experts, while feedback from lecturers and students also contributed to the evaluation process. The results show that media experts evaluated it at 90%, material experts at 93%, IT experts at 95%, and student responses indicated an 85% feasibility rating, collectively suggesting the learning media to be "highly feasible" for implementation. Educators can leverage this medium to provide students with a more interactive and culturally relevant learning experience, fostering a deeper connection between academic content and their local contexts.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to examine how reading short stories can help eighth-grade students at Private Junior High in Sidas improve their vocabulary mastery. The context of the problem shows that students have difficulty mastering English because of conventional teaching methods. This research employed a quantitative method with an experimental design involving 34 eighth-grade students selected through cluster random sampling. The research instrument consisted of a vocabulary mastery test comprising 20 multiple-choice items covering six aspects: word definitions, synonyms, fill-in-the-blanks, antonyms, translations, and spelling. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 through a t-test and Cohen's d effect size. The results showed that the experimental group’s mean score increased from 42.35 in the pre-test to 67.05 in the post-test, while the control group’s score increased slightly from 46.09 to 53.44. A significant difference was found using the independent t-test (t = -3.712, p = 0.000) with an effect size of 0.92, indicating a strong practical impact. These findings confirm that the short story reading method is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery compared to traditional methods. The success of this method lies in its contextual learning approach and the use of explicit vocabulary teaching techniques, which make the learning process more engaging. ABSTRAK Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkaji bagaimana membaca cerita pendek dapat membantu siswa kelas VIII di SMP Swasta di Sidas meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata. Konteks masalah menunjukkan bahwa siswa kesulitan dalam menguasai bahasa inggris karena metode pengajaran yang masih konvensional. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimen, dengan 34 siswa kelas VIII sebagai sampel yang dipilih melalui teknik cluster random sampling. Instrumen penelitian berupa tes pilihan ganda sebanyak 20 soal yang mencakup enam aspek: definisi kata, sinonim, isian kosong, antonim, terjemahan, dan ejaan. Data dianalisis menggunakan SPSS versi 25 dengan uji t dan ukuran efek Cohen's d. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa skor rata-rata kelompok eksperimen meningkat dari 42.35 pada pre-test menjadi 67.05 pada post-test, sementara kelompok kontrol hanya meningkat dari 46.09 menjadi 53.44. Perbedaan signifikan ditemukan melalui uji t independen (t = -3.712, p = 0.000) dengan ukuran efek sebesar 0.92, yang menunjukkan pengaruh praktis yang besar. Hasil ini membuktikan bahwa metode membaca cerita pendek efektif dalam meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa dibandingkan dengan metode tradisional. Keberhasilan metode ini terletak pada pendekatan pembelajaran yang kontekstual dan penggunaan teknik pengajaran kosakata secara eksplisit, yang membuat proses belajar menjadi lebih menarik.
