Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe and to explain the realization of conversational features in massively multiplayer online game chat entitled Mafia City. This study used a conversation analysis approach with a qualitative design. The focus of this study is the gamers’ interactions through the game chat. The instrument of the research is I myself as the participant observer. Tables of specifications are the secondary instrument in the observation. The results of the study show that in Mafia City, the use of conversational features such as turn-takings, adjacency pairs, and repairs is possible. Even so, the realization of those features was not exactly similar compared to those in face-to-face conversation. The main problem was the disrupted turn-takings and adjacency pairs. For repairs, the most common type that appeared in the chat was self-initiated self-repair, while the most common pattern that occurred was replacement. Their occurrences were in consequence of the nature of online chat which is visually decontextualized. For jargons, the chatters are creative enough to create acronyms, contractions, and abbreviations freely. For the realization of extra-linguistic features, the chatters used emoticons as the result of the chatters’ creativity in dealing with the lack of prosodic features. These findings can be beneficial for the development of discourse study, especially in internet-based communication.

Abstract

This research aims to elaborate the difficulty levels of three different texts that bring the same topic. This research is a discourse analysis which was done by analyzing the lexical density, nominalization, and the finiteness of the texts. The three texts that have been analyzed were taken online from Wikipedia and two personal blogs for English research. The results show that the first text can be taken as the most complex text for high level readers, the second text for the intermediate level readers, and the third text for the elementary or low level readers. In terms of lexical density, the first text gains very high percentage which is up to 60%, this shows that the text is the most informative of all. Whereas, the second text and the third text’s lexical density are both 50%, which indicates that there are lack of contents in them.  Regarding to nominalization, the first text is still on the highest level with 12 nominalizations, the second text is on the intermediate level with 10 nominalizations, and the third text is on the lowest level, without any nominalization. The last is from the finiteness side. The first text has the lowest number of finiteness; the second text has the second highest number of finites, whereas the third text has the highest number of finites of all. This is the result of the highest number of lexical density and nominalization of the first text that decreases the frequency of sentences in it. The results of this research can be useful for online readers to decide what kind of reading materials which are suitable for their English levels.

Abstract

This study analyzes moral values and patriotism in Disney's "The Little Mermaid" (2023) using descriptive qualitative methodology with content analysis techniques. The research addresses contemporary society's moral crisis and declining patriotic sentiment, particularly among younger generations, through examining how popular media can serve as educational vehicles for positive value transmission. Utilizing Magnis-Suseno's theoretical framework for moral values and Ginting's patriotism theory, the analysis identified five dominant moral values: courage, integrity, responsibility, cosmic awareness, and reconciliation, categorized across three human relationship dimensions. The patriotism analysis revealed four key values classified into blind and constructive patriotism, with constructive patriotism dominating 75% of examined scenes. Findings demonstrate that courage and integrity are the most prominent moral values, while pro-people leadership and multicultural unity represent significant patriotic elements. The research employed theory triangulation and data source triangulation to ensure validity. Results suggest that Disney's adaptation effectively integrates moral education and patriotic values relevant to Indonesia's contemporary challenges, including elite corruption and political polarization. This study contributes to educational literature by demonstrating how modern film adaptations can serve as meaningful resources for character development and nationalism education.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research investigates the influence of Dayak cultural values, specifically those inherent in the Ramin Batangk concept, on the English language achievements of students at Institut Shanti Bhuana in Bengkayang. The Ramin Batangk, a traditional Dayak longhouse, embodies a rich cultural heritage characterized by communal values such as cooperation, discipline, respect for nature, and spirituality. These values are integrated into the students' dormitory life, which reflects both traditional Dayak culture and modern boarding school practices. Employing a correlational research design, the study examines the relationship between students' perceptions of these cultural values and their English language performance. The findings indicate a positive correlation between the cultural values practiced within the dormitories and students' academic success in English. Specifically, values such as cooperation, discipline, and perseverance significantly contribute to enhancing students' English achievement. These results underscore the importance of a culturally enriched learning environment in fostering both academic success and the preservation of cultural identity. The study recommends that educational strategies at Institut Shanti Bhuana continue to emphasize the integration of Dayak cultural values to further promote academic excellence and personal development among students.
