Abstract

The global appeal of animated films has increased significantly, leading to an urgent demand for high-quality and easily comprehensible subtitle translations. This research investigates the complexities of subtitle translation in the animated film Frozen (2013) by exploring the interaction between visual elements and dialogue. Employing multimodal discourse analysis, the study evaluates how subtitles can enhance or diminish the narrative experience by aligning with or diverging from the film’s visual context. The findings indicate that while translations generally capture the intended meaning and tone, there are critical moments—especially in humorous scenes—where subtitles fail to fully resonate with the accompanying visuals. This misalignment underscores the importance of a refined approach to translation that considers the interplay of various expressive modes. The research ultimately aims to contribute to best practices in audiovisual translation, emphasizing the need for coherence between subtitles and visual storytelling to enrich audience engagement.

Abstract

Extrovert and introvert students are studied in this case using the study of their personal and learning styles as acquired from their challenges in academic writing. This research has used a descriptive qualitative approach to studying specifically the students with writing difficulties in the English Language Education Study Programme, Class of 2021. Interviews were conducted and then analysed thematically, and key issues identified. Of the 16 students who participated, only one was an introvert, but extrovert students suffer from singular/plural usage, tenses, prepositions, subject/verb agreement, articles, spelling, prefix-suffix, capitalization, punctuation, vocabulary, paragraph Paraphrasing, summarizing, and organization, cohesion and coherence. Like our introvert students, introvert students don’t have subject/verb agreement, articles, capitalization, or paragraph organization problems, but they have similar issues. These problems are influenced by both internal (personality) and external (feedbacks, time, language strategy) factors

Abstract

This study investigates the pedagogical role of translanguaging in multilingual English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, centering on the perspectives of both students and lecturers, along with the underlying factors that inform these views. Adopting a phenomenological approach, the research draws on data from semi-structured interviews, preceded by classroom observations that served to contextualize the phenomenon and refine participant selection. The findings suggest that translanguaging facilitates deeper comprehension, stimulates active learner engagement, and reinforces linguistic confidence. Nonetheless, Its enactment is mediated by institutional norms, asymmetrical language practices, and a general lack of pedagogical awareness. Participants’ perspectives are further influenced by variables such as linguistic background, language engagement, academic expectations and goals, classroom environment and lecturer practices, peer influence and collaborative dynamics, teaching experience and curriculum policy. These insights point to the pressing need for a coherent and principled framework that integrates translanguaging as a deliberate instructional resource rather than an incidental coping mechanism. The study contributes to the evolving discourse on multilingual education and offers implications for enhancing EFL pedagogy in higher education contexts.

Abstract

This research aims to find the types of flouting maxim that appear in the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle movie. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method, used to explain in depth about the flouting maxim. The data were taken from conversations in the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle movie by watching it repeatedly. In this research, the researcher used the theory of Grice (1975) to analyze the types of flouting maxim, which consist of four types of maxims, namely the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relevance, and the maxim of manner. The results of this research indicate that the four types of flouting maxim appear during the conversation in the movie. Among the types of flouting maxim, the dominant data that appears in this research is the flouting the maxim of relevance. Meanwhile, the flouting maxim that occurs least frequently is the maxim of quality. There is one uniqueness found in this research that is not in Grice's theory but is found in the data. There is a hyperbolic metaphor in the flouting the maxim of manner by one of the characters in the movie. This research aims to find the types of flouting maxim that appear in the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle movie. Abstract

Academic vocabulary is essential for students to engage effectively in academic discourse. This study analyzes the extent of academic vocabulary usage among students based on Coxhead’s (2000) Academic Word List (AWL). Using a corpus-based approach, the study examines a dataset comprising 902,618 tokens to determine the coverage of AWL words in student writing. The findings reveal that students used 559 out of the 570 AWL words, demonstrating a high level of academic vocabulary coverage. To further investigate the factors influencing academic vocabulary usage, interviews were conducted with students categorized into high and low proficiency groups. High-level academic vocabulary users demonstrated stronger engagement with academic texts, benefited from structured educational support, and employed active learning strategies. Conversely, low-level users exhibited limited exposure to academic texts, lacked explicit vocabulary instruction, and relied on passive learning approaches. These findings highlight the importance of targeted pedagogical interventions to enhance students’ academic vocabulary acquisition and application.

Abstract

Polysemy, the phenomenon where a single word carries multiple related meanings, is a fundamental aspect of semantics that plays a crucial role in language interpretation. In song lyrics, polysemy allows for layered meanings, enriching the emotional depth and artistic expression of music. This study examines the presence of polysemy in Ed Sheeran’s album Divide, analysing how words with multiple meanings contribute to the lyrical depth of his songs. The album features numerous instances of logical polysemy, where words retain different but interconnected meanings, enhancing the storytelling and emotional impact of the lyrics. By analysing various songs from Divide, this study aims to highlight Sheeran’s use of polysemy as a stylistic and poetic device. Recognizing polysemy in music not only aids in accurate interpretation but also deepens the emotional connection between the artist and the audience.
