Abstract

Online dating apps such as Bumble are becoming increasingly popular among gay individuals looking for partners. However, the process of self-disclosure in the digital space remains a challenge in a society rife with stigma such as Indonesia. This study aims to understand the self-disclosure strategies of gay individuals on Bumble and the challenges they face. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this study will explore the subjects' experiences in depth. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with four active informants on Bumble and one gender studies academic. Non-participatory observation and documentation were also used to supplement the data, providing a broader contextual understanding. The analysis uses the theories of Computer-Mediated Communication and Social Penetration. The results show that self-disclosure is done gradually and cautiously, starting with basic information on public profiles, then continuing to more personal conversations on other platforms such as WhatsApp. Although Bumble offers inclusive features such as profile flexibility and gender identity options, users are still hampered by social norms and concerns about discrimination. The study also found that physical beauty standards, masculinity stereotypes, and discrimination against feminine expressions are barriers to openness. Feedback from potential partners also influences the extent to which a person is open. Feedback from potential partners also influences the extent to which a person is open. In addition, this application is not only used to find partners, but also as a space for exploration and validation of identity. This study emphasizes the importance of a safe, inclusive, and empathetic platform design to support the experience of LGBTQ+ users in communicating more freely and reflectively.

Abstract

Sudirman Street in Bandung has become a unique phenomenon in the urban landscape of Indonesia. As a popular culinary district, it draws attention due to the presence of non-halal food amidst a predominantly Muslim population. This condition raises questions about how cultural tolerance, religious identity, and economic dynamics interact in public spaces. This study employs the social-identity theory and the concept of a gastronomic city, using direct observation and literature review methods to analyze the cultural negotiation processes that occur. Observation was conducted to understand the social dynamics of the area, while the literature review was used to strengthen the theoretical analysis. The findings reveal that tolerance in this area is pragmatic, managed through space segmentation between halal and non-halal dining areas, as well as social norms emphasizing respect for individual beliefs. Furthermore, this area functions as a representation of a gastronomic city, where cross-cultural experiences are presented through culinary exploration. This study contributes to academic discourse on the formation of tolerance spaces in urban contexts, particularly in areas with cultural and religious pluralism. Thus, Sudirman Street is not merely a culinary hub but also a social negotiation space that reflects the flexibility of identity and urban societal harmony

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of destination image and social media promotion on tourists visit intention to Soedirman Street, Bandung. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected through an online survey administered to 200 respondents, comprising 100 local residents from Bandung and 100 visitors from outside the city. Employing comparative analysis, this research examines how these variables affect visit intention differently between local and non-local tourists. The results reveal that destination image significantly impacts visit intention across both groups, with a stronger effect observed among local residents. Social media promotion significantly influences non-local tourists visit intention but shows no significant effect on locals. These findings suggest that tailored marketing strategies are necessary: social media campaigns should primarily target non-local visitors, while efforts to enhance destination image and community engagement are essential to encourage local visitation. The study contributes valuable insights into urban tourism behaviour and supports sustainable tourism development in culturally diverse settings.

Abstract

This research examines the dynamics of cultural interaction between tourists and local communities in the culinary public space of Sudirman Street, Bandung, within the framework of intercultural communication. Sudirman Street has emerged as a new cultural space and serves as a symbol of a “melting pot,” where diverse cultural and religious backgrounds converge amidst the dominance of religious values in Bandung society. The aim of this research is to understand how social symbols construct meaning and relationships among individuals through public interactions. A qualitative approach grounded in the sociocultural tradition is employed, utilizing field observations, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that, despite religious norms concerning halal and non-halal practices, social behavior at Sudirman Street reveals a flexible negotiation of meaning among individuals, informed by personal understanding (mind) and self-identity (self), as conceptualized in George Herbert Mead’s theory of symbolic interactionism. The study reveals that tolerance, cultural compromise, and symbolic adaptation are essential for fostering social harmony within this public space. These findings suggest that culinary tourism is not merely an economic activity but also a site for cultural dialogue that reflects the level of tolerance within a city. Through Sudirman Street, Bandung demonstrates its potential to serve as a model of inclusive public space that accommodates cultural and religious diversity.

Abstract

Inclusive education for children with special needs (CSN) in Indonesia remains hindered by limited professional resources, inadequate inclusive infrastructure, and low public acceptance. This community-development based activities aim to address these barriers by implementing a structured therapeutic communication training program to the key stakeholders of Lentera Cita Karya Foundation, an inclusive school in Jakarta. The program targeted teachers, in-house therapists, and parents, through focus group discussions (FGD) designed to explore communication challenges and collaboratively build effective strategies. Over two months, trainings were delivered to 15 CSN, 4 therapists, 4 parents, and 4 teachers. In addition to communication training for adults, children participated in basic public speaking and photography sessions to strengthen their cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills. The program concluded with a public seminar titled “ACT” (Acceptance, Caring, and Tolerance) attended by approximately 80 people, featuring expert speakers and community engagement sessions to promote inclusive dialogue. The seminar also showcased photos taken by the CSN during the training. Results from the intervention highlight that acceptance emerged as the most significant factor influencing CSN development. The findings underscore the importance of integrative, community-based therapeutic communication in supporting inclusive educational environments.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how follower interactions and participation on the Instagram account @teensclub.pigeonteens contribute to the formation of virtual community dynamics among teenage girls. Using a qualitative approach with virtual ethnography methods, this research is analyzed through George Herbert Mead’s Symbolic Interactionism Theory, focusing on the concepts of mind, self, and society. The findings show that @teensclub.pigeonteens functions not only as a promotional platform for beauty products but also as a social space where identity, values, and digital culture are constructed. Interactions through posts, captions, comments, and community-specific terms foster emotional closeness and solidarity among members. Active participation is reflected in engagement with interactive content and community activities conducted through Instagram and WhatsApp. The study concludes that digital communication facilitates meaningful social relationships and supports the development of virtual communities among teenage girls in cyberspace.
