Abstract

Established in September 2023, the Lentera Cita Karya Foundation aims to address the educational and therapeutic needs in an inclusive community for children with special needs by providing holistic services through the Special Harmony School in North Jakarta. The school offers tailored education for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and intellectual disabilities (including Down syndrome), incorporating therapeutic support such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, sensory integration, and parent-teacher skill development programs. Despite these efforts, the implementation of therapeutic communication remains a challenge for facilitators, including teachers and therapists. Issues include limited understanding of effective verbal and non-verbal communication strategies, emotional expression, and appropriate interaction in both medical and non-medical settings. To address these challenges, a community engagement program was conducted involving 12 participants, consisting of inclusive education teachers, therapists, and parents. The program utilized a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method, followed by expert-led sessions conducted by university lecturers. Over three separate sessions, participants engaged in thematic discussions on therapeutic communication, followed by structured presentations designed to enhance their conceptual and practical understanding. The initiative identified three major challenges: communication between therapists and children with special needs, the childrens communication with their environment, and persistent societal stigma. The program succeeded in improving participants awareness, emotional sensitivity, and basic therapeutic communication strategies applicable in inclusive educational settings.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the patterns of interpersonal communication in phonics learning for early childhood at Bright Cubs Learning Center. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, using in-depth interviews with three phonics teachers and two parents. This research applies Social Learning Theory and Symbolic Interactionism to explain how communication between teachers and students shapes learning experiences and children’s perceptions of letters and sounds. The findings reveal that warm, responsive, and interactive communication patterns play a crucial role in building children's self-confidence and facilitating their understanding of phonics. Symbolic communication expressed through facial expressions, body movements, and vocal intonation provides meaningful learning cues for children in learning to read. The interaction fosters not only early literacy skills but also the broader development of children's interpersonal communication. These findings highlight the importance of the quality of interpersonal relationships in early childhood education, particularly in the phonics learning context.

Abstract

The high incidence of fires in Jakarta demands the Fire and Rescue Department of DKI Jakarta to maintain effective internal communication strategies. This study aims to examine how these strategies impact the department’s emergency fire response. The research employed a qualitative approach using a case study method, with data collected through in-depth interviews with six department personnel and three fire-affected residents, field observations, and documentation. Analysis was based on Karl Weick’s Organizational Information Theory, focusing on the processes of enactment, selection, and retention. The findings reveal that internal communication strategies include rapid reporting via 112 and nearby posts, information validation via telephone, use of color codes and operational terms such as “76” and “86,” and coordination through handy talkies across teams and command levels. A tiered command structure is applied based on the first responder, followed by a unified command system at the fire scene. Communication barriers identified include differences in perception, time pressure, signal disruption in areas like high-rise buildings or basements (blind spots), and environmental constraints such as traffic congestion or narrow alleyways. Nevertheless, the structured and adaptive communication strategy effectively reduces equivocality and accelerates decision-making during emergencies. This study contributes to organizational communication literature in the context of emergency response and offers insights into the importance of internal communication in managing critical information within public service organizations.

Abstract

Online dating apps such as Bumble are becoming increasingly popular among gay individuals looking for partners. However, the process of self-disclosure in the digital space remains a challenge in a society rife with stigma such as Indonesia. This study aims to understand the self-disclosure strategies of gay individuals on Bumble and the challenges they face. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this study will explore the subjects' experiences in depth. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with four active informants on Bumble and one gender studies academic. Non-participatory observation and documentation were also used to supplement the data, providing a broader contextual understanding. The analysis uses the theories of Computer-Mediated Communication and Social Penetration. The results show that self-disclosure is done gradually and cautiously, starting with basic information on public profiles, then continuing to more personal conversations on other platforms such as WhatsApp. Although Bumble offers inclusive features such as profile flexibility and gender identity options, users are still hampered by social norms and concerns about discrimination. The study also found that physical beauty standards, masculinity stereotypes, and discrimination against feminine expressions are barriers to openness. Feedback from potential partners also influences the extent to which a person is open. Feedback from potential partners also influences the extent to which a person is open. In addition, this application is not only used to find partners, but also as a space for exploration and validation of identity. This study emphasizes the importance of a safe, inclusive, and empathetic platform design to support the experience of LGBTQ+ users in communicating more freely and reflectively.

Abstract

Sudirman Street in Bandung has become a unique phenomenon in the urban landscape of Indonesia. As a popular culinary district, it draws attention due to the presence of non-halal food amidst a predominantly Muslim population. This condition raises questions about how cultural tolerance, religious identity, and economic dynamics interact in public spaces. This study employs the social-identity theory and the concept of a gastronomic city, using direct observation and literature review methods to analyze the cultural negotiation processes that occur. Observation was conducted to understand the social dynamics of the area, while the literature review was used to strengthen the theoretical analysis. The findings reveal that tolerance in this area is pragmatic, managed through space segmentation between halal and non-halal dining areas, as well as social norms emphasizing respect for individual beliefs. Furthermore, this area functions as a representation of a gastronomic city, where cross-cultural experiences are presented through culinary exploration. This study contributes to academic discourse on the formation of tolerance spaces in urban contexts, particularly in areas with cultural and religious pluralism. Thus, Sudirman Street is not merely a culinary hub but also a social negotiation space that reflects the flexibility of identity and urban societal harmony
