Abstract

Tropical forests play an important role as carbon sinks and biomass stores, including through the litter produced by vegetation. Litter contributes to nutrient cycling, maintains soil fertility, and is an important component of ecosystem carbon reserves. This study aims to estimate the biomass and carbon content of litter in the Jaboi Hot Spring Flow Area, Sukajaya District, Sabang City. The study was conducted in June 2025 using a 100 m long line transect method with four transects, each consisting of 18 1 x 1 m plots. Leaf litter samples were collected, their wet weight was measured, dried in an oven for 48 hours, and their carbon content was calculated based on the percentage of organic carbon of 0.47. The results showed a total litter biomass of 8,106 kg/m² with an average of 2,027 kg/m², and a total litter carbon of 3,809 kg/m² with an average of 0,952 kg/m². The highest values were found at Station 3 (2,354 kg/m² and 1,106 kg/m²) and the lowest at Station 1 (1,691 kg/m² and 0,795 kg/m²). Variations in values are influenced by soil physical-chemical factors, vegetation density, and climatic conditions, which influence production and decomposition rates. These results emphasize the importance of monitoring biomass and litter carbon to support forest management and conservation.

Abstract

Biodiversity is essentially a reflection of the number of species and individuals inhabiting a community, as seen in the Pteridophyta group. These plants, which have evolved to have differentiated roots, stems, and leaves, play an important role in forest systems, primarily as protectors of the soil surface from the effects of erosion, in addition to contributing to the decomposition of organic matter that produces nutrients, and being a major part of the producer chain in the trophic structure. The Jaboi hot spring area, located in the Sukajaya District of Sabang City, exhibits unique ecological characteristics, influenced by the presence of the Jaboi volcano, which gives rise to geothermal phenomena such as fumarole activity, hot steam emissions, and the emergence of high-temperature water flows. This geothermal dynamic directly causes alterations in the physical and chemical conditions of the local soil, thereby shaping habitat characteristics and influencing the existence of vegetation, including ferns. To date, there is little scientific information available on the diversity of ferns in this area. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine and measure the diversity of ferns in the Jaboi hot spring area. The study was conducted in October 2025 using an exploratory survey approach to determine plots and purposive sampling techniques for field data collection. Diversity analysis was based on the Shannon-Wiener index (Ĥ) formula. Based on the identification results, 15 species of ferns from a total of 6 families and 433 individuals were found. The diversity index obtained (Ĥ=2.490171) indicates a moderate level.

Abstract

Financial management plays an important role in supporting the sustainability and development of Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes). However, many BUMDes still face problems related to manual financial recording, limited accounting knowledge, and low utilization of information technology. This Community Service Program (Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat/PKM) aims to optimize BUMDes financial management through the implementation of a digital-based financial information system. The methods used in this program include counseling, training, simulation, and direct assistance for BUMDes administrators. The results of the activity indicate an improvement in participants’ understanding of basic accounting concepts and the use of financial information systems for recording transactions and preparing financial reports. The implementation of the financial information system has proven to improve efficiency, accuracy, transparency, and accountability in BUMDes financial management. Therefore, the digitalization of financial systems can serve as a strategic solution to strengthen financial governance and support sustainable village economic development.

Abstract

This study uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive evaluative type to assess the effectiveness of the School Literacy Movement Program (GLS) in elementary schools in Gunung Kidul Regency, Yogyakarta. In this Context, reading literacy challenges are still evident in the uneven interest in reading, limited and diverse reading materials, variations in the readiness of school facilities/infrastructure, and parental involvement and consistency in implementing literacy activities. The study evaluated GLS using the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) model based on the perceptions of program implementers (principals and teachers). Data were collected through questionnaires from 9 principals and 54 teachers in 9 elementary schools and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 29 (mean and standard deviation). The results show Context = 3.55 (very good), Input = 3.35 (very good), Process = 3.10 (good), and Product = 3.50 (perfect). These findings confirm that GLS has a strong policy foundation and adequate resource support, followed by generally exemplary implementation, and contribute to improving students' reading literacy. The implementation of GLS at Gunung Kidul Elementary School is effective. However, it needs to be strengthened in terms of process, especially consistency of implementation, active student participation, diversification of reading materials, support from parents/community, and ensuring the sustainability of resources so that the program's impact is more equitable and sustainable.

Abstract

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a highly perishable climacteric fruit with limited shelf life at room temperature due to rapid respiration and transpiration. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of Aloe vera gel edible coating on weight loss, color change, and fruit firmness of California variety papaya during room temperature storage. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatment levels was applied: K0 = 0% (control), K1 = 60%, K2 = 80%, and K3 = 100% Aloe vera gel concentration, each replicated four times. Papaya fruits were coated by immersion for 5 minutes and stored at room temperature (±25–28°C) for 8 days. Parameters measured included weight loss (%), fruit color (L*, a*, b* values using a colorimeter), and fruit firmness (Newton, using a penetrometer). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA at a 5% significance level, followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Results showed that Aloe vera gel edible coating significantly affected all quality parameters during storage. Treatment K2 (80% concentration) consistently demonstrated the best performance, exhibiting the lowest weight loss (1.0775%), most effective inhibition of color changes (highest b* value of 56.400 on day 6; lowest a* value of 2.450 on day 8), and highest fruit firmness (2.800 ± 0.356 N) compared to other treatments. The semi-permeable layer formed at this optimal concentration effectively reduced transpiration and respiration rates without triggering anaerobic fermentation. It is concluded that Aloe vera gel edible coating at 80% concentration is the most effective treatment for maintaining papaya fruit quality during room temperature storage.
