Abstract

Maritime English is a “scourge” for maritime science students at universities engaged in maritime science. English is a foreign language in Indonesia may cause the students cannot understand Maritime English well. A phenomenon occurs that Maritime English teachers do not have basic knowledge about the maritime sciences. This has an impact on the teaching and learning process of Maritime English. This study seeks to reveal whether Maritime English is English teaching intended for maritime science or Maritime English is actually maritime science materials taught using English. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive method by using a learning module adopted from the IMO Model Course 3.17 to conduct research. The results of the study found that the teachers never obtained many materials related to the maritime world. However, there are also materials that these teachers obtained during their undergraduate and master’s degree courses, such as grammar, reading comprehension, and listening comprehension. This means that Maritime English is indeed English intended for maritime science students (English for Special Purposes) and maritime sciences delivered using English.

Abstract

Movies or stories with superheroes theme always give color to the hearts of the audience. GoGo Dino film, which is an animated cartoon series from South Korea, also provides an excellent color to the audience. This study aims to analyze the Appraisal System used in the opening song lyrics of the Indonesian version of the GoGo Dino cartoon series. The research data obtained were then analyzed using Martin and White’s Appraisal System theory. Researchers used qualitative descriptive methods in explaining the results of the study. It can be seen that in the lyrics of the song, the author of the lyrics implements less use of affect and uses more judgment. The Judgment implementation shows that a person, or in this case, a superhero, is valued by his behavior parameters. From the behavior parameters, it can bring up the effect of affect which is a person’s reaction to the behavior.

Abstract

English, which is still considered a foreign language in Indonesia, has an impact on the teaching and learning process that is not optimal. This refers to the low proficiency in English, especially those of the Akademi Maritim Nusantara (AMN) Cilacap students. Good reading skills are one of the skills that AMN Cilacap students must possess. This is in line with the mission of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia which makes reading and writing literacy the first position of the 6 (six) literacy abilities that must be possessed. The measurement of reading ability can be done in various ways. This study aims to see what methods are used by English language lecturers in assessing the reading ability of AMN Cilacap students. Also, the researcher wanted to see what methods the lecturer used most often. Researchers conducted a small survey of 2 (two) lecturers who taught English courses from 2 (two) different study programs, namely Marine Engineering and Port Management. Researchers distributed 2 (two) kinds of questionnaires which were then supported by interviews with each lecturer. The results show that there are 6 (six) methods used by the two lecturers in assessing reading skills. The Perceptive Task method is the method most often used. Even so, in choosing the right assessment method, the lecturer must also understand the conditions and level of understanding possessed by students.

Abstract

English is still considered as a difficult thing to learn, both for students and teachers. That is because English is still regarded as a foreign language and is rarely used in daily conversation. The difficulty in mastering English is found not only in the speaking aspect but also in the writing element. In examining student writing (error analysis), lecturers at the Akademi Maritim Nusantara Cilacap used a program called Grammarly. This study aims to see the implementation of Grammarly in helping lecturers make Error Analysis. Researchers found that Grammarly was enough to help lecturers in conducting error analysis. Researchers then classify the types of errors found in student writing using Grammarly. From 7 (seven) student writings that were used as data sources in this study, there were 9 (nine) types of errors that were made in the writing of the seven students. The most common errors were errors with spelling (39%) and punctuation (40.3%). Although Grammarly is proven to help the work of lecturers in conducting Error Analysis, Grammarly still cannot find sentences that have errors semantically quickly.

Abstract

This research is a forensic linguistic study that concentrates on the analysis of speech acts spoken by a companion from one of the representative offices of a ministry in Cilacap during an investigative interview between an investigator and a child victim of a sexual violence crime. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the speech of a child victim and a companion during an investigative interview that occurred at a police station in Cilacap. This investigation is qualitative in nature and is structured as a case study. Speech data were collected during the investigative interview using listening and note-taking techniques. The data were subsequently analyzed in accordance with Weigand’s (2010) dialogic speech act theory. Additionally, the function and authority of a companion in the investigative interview process are clarified by the Regulation of the Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia (Permen PPPA) No. 2 of 2022. The analysis results indicate that the code of ethics outlined in Permen PPPA No. 2 of 2022 is contravened by the companion’s dominance of the explorative speech act and the presence of the directive speech act. This implies that the companion must be re-informed about the code of ethics outlined in the Women Empowerment and Child Protection Regulation No. 2 of 2022. The findings of this research have the potential to assist the relevant ministries in enhancing the efficacy and authority of an assistant in the interview process related to the investigation of sexual violence crimes.

Abstract

This research seeks to evaluate the powerfulness of the website www.englishspeak.com in enhancing the speaking skills of fourth semester cadets in Marine Mechanical Engineering Technology (TRPK) Batch 59. The research employs an experimental design featuring a pre-test and post-test format implemented for both control and experimental groups. The subjects are fourth semester cadets from the TRPK Department at Politeknik Bumi Akpelni. The sample consists of class TRPK A acting as the experimental group and class TRPK B as the control group, with both classes containing 39 cadets. The process consists of an initial meeting: a pre-test given to both groups, the second and third meetings: the experimental group undergoes treatment using www.englishspeak.com, while the control group learns via conventional methods, and the last meeting: a post-test is executed for both groups. Cadets are required to engage in basic discussions to the topic being explored. The evaluation of their speaking abilities is based on five components: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, content, and fluency. The results of this research indicate the average pre-test scores: experimental group: 44.20; control group: 46.46 and the average post- test scores: experimental group: 61.03; control group: 50.26. The group that was tested demonstrated progress in all five areas of speaking after using www.englishspeak.com. A t-test was performed to evaluate the significance of the outcomes. The t-value was 2.78, surpassing the t-table value of 1.67. This shows a significant difference in the post-test outcomes between the experimental group and the control group. The website www.englishspeak.com greatly enhanced the speaking skills of the cadets regarding pronunciation, sentence formation, vocabulary, substance, and speaking speed. This research shows that using interactive online learning such as www.englishspeak.com can be powerful for teaching speaking.

Abstract

Defamation remains a prevalent occurrence on a global scale. In Indonesia, the fervor surrounding the outcomes of the 2014 presidential election contestation has led to a noticeable escalation in the level of fanaticism among supporters of the respective presidential and vice-presidential candidates. Frequently, the act of posting tweets on the social media platform Twitter can result in the author becoming entangled in a legal dispute pertaining to defamation. The objective of this research is to investigate the potential occurrence of defamation committed by Natalius Pigai, the former National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) member. The analytical framework employed in this study to assess the linguistic techniques employed in the data, with the aim of identifying potential instances of defamation, was Appraisal Theory as proposed by Martin and White (2005). The data was extracted from a Twitter post authored by Natalius Pigai (@NataliusPigai2) on October 1, 2021. The findings indicated that Jokowi and Ganjar were subjected to poor evaluation in relation to their treatment of the Papuan population. The presence of this adverse evaluation also gives rise to the possibility of defamation in accordance with the provisions outlined in the Criminal Code and the ITE Law. The presence of credible factual evidence supports the assertion that Natalius Pigai's tweet can be classified as hate speech, which has the potential to result in defamation. The findings derived from this study could potentially facilitate the application of law enforcement strategies in the Indonesian police investigation, as well as in other nations that are undertaking comparable reforms to those observed in Indonesia.

Abstract

Background: The information supplied by a victim of sexual violence during an investigative interview frequently serves as the sole foundation for investigators in processing a sexual violence case. Nonetheless, the investigative interview process often lacks professionalism due to efforts to impose the investigator’s personal assumptions. Aims: This research is a forensic language analysis intended to uncover the assumptions held by an investigator during an investigative interview with a child victim of sexual violence. Methods: This study utilized qualitative data obtained from the investigative interview between an investigator and a child victim of sexual violence at a police station in Cilacap. Conversation data were collected using listening and note-taking techniques. The statistics were subsequently verified with the investigator to validate their legitimacy. This study employs the dialogic speech act theory technique proposed by Weigand (2010) to elucidate the assumptions held by the researcher. Results: The findings of this study suggested that the investigator attempted to impose her personal assumptions on the victim through numerous exploratory speech acts designed to validate, offer options, and direct the victim’s responses. Implications: The findings of this study may serve as a reference in assessing the specifics of inquiries within the Standard Operational Procedure on Examination and questioning techniques during the investigative interview procedure.

Abstract

An abstract is a brief and all-encompassing synopsis of scientific literature. Abstracts facilitate readers’ comprehension of article contents concisely and expeditiously. Hence, it is imperative to craft the abstract in a captivating manner to pique the reader’s curiosity and encourage them to peruse the complete content. An effective abstract should be precise, objective, logically organised, easily understandable, and concise. Nevertheless, several individuals, namely those studying Nautical Sciences, have encountered difficulty when it comes to writing in English. The task becomes further intricate since it involves meeting all the requirements, such as structuring and presenting coherent concepts to ensure the reader’s understanding of the text. The objective of this study is to identify the flaws present in the final project abstract of the Nautical Sciences Student at Akademi Maritim Nusantara Cilacap. This study employs a qualitative methodology, utilising a descriptive analysis technique. A total of ten samples were deliberately gathered for this investigation in the year 2022. The research findings indicate that there are two major concerns regarding faults in composing the abstract, specifically those pertaining to clarity and grammatical accuracy. Clarity errors encompass issues related to brevity (21) and the utilisation of passive voice (15). In addition, the data contained six grammatical problems, specifically verb errors (21), punctuation errors (10), preposition errors (7), spelling errors (5), conjunction errors (5), and article errors (4).
