Abstract

Until now, there is still no specific treatment that has proven effective for COVID-19, so prevention of the disease is the best way to break the chain of its transmission. This prevention effort requires participation from the entire community. However, it is not easy for people to participate due to a lack of understanding about the disease and awareness of clean-living behavior to prevent infection. Yayasan Rumah Ibu Indonesia (Rumaisa) is a foundation that focuses on increasing family resilience. One of the targets for clean and healthy living behavior (PHBS) is household/family; therefore, PHBS education and training in homes during the pandemic, especially for mothers, is a strategic way to mobilize and empower family members to practice clean and healthy behavior. This study aims to determine the effect of education and training of PHBS within families during the pandemic on mothers’’ knowledge in Yayasan Rumaisa. Participants’ level of knowledge is measured using a questionnaire given before and after the education and training, in the form of pre-test and post-test. From the results, it can be seen that the post-test scores were increased compared to the pre-test scores. An increase in participants’ knowledge of PHBS within families during the pandemic is expected to increase community participation in preventing disease transmission, especially COVID-19.

Abstract

Dentists are typically at high risk of developing low back pain (LBP) due to their working position. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the role of ergonomic interventions in preventing LBP. The study procedures were carried out using a scoping review method with Boolean search based on PCC (Population, Concept, and Context) on PubMed, Wiley, and Google Scholar. Article management and selection process was then conducted using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) as a guide. Inclusion criteria were experimental articles from 2011 to 2021, while exclusion criteria included scoping, rapid, and systematic reviews, gray literature, or papers that were not fully accessible. A total of 1775 articles were obtained and only 12 were selected with a total of 557 participants. The selected articles consisted of 2, 1, and 7 in the work environment, organizational, and individual domains, respectively, while 2 articles had more than 1 ergonomic intervention in different domains. The results showed that ergonomic interventions could prevent LBP among dentists. The clinical significance reported across all included articles showed that participants experienced positive changes in posture, decreased pain levels, and improved work quality after receiving the treatment across all domains.

Abstract

Introduction: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a common condition among dentists due to awkward hand positions, repetitive hand movements, mechanical pressure on the palms, strong grips, and vibration of tools involved in their work. Non-surgical therapy is recommended for mild to moderate levels of CTS, while surgical treatment may be considered for severe cases. Aim: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of various non-surgical therapy for CTS. Method: The literature search used Boolean language in PCC format on PubMed and Google Scholar databases. The literature search was according to PRISMA-ScR flow chart guidelines and 6,641 articles were obtained. 16 articles met the inclusion criteria, consisting of: splinting (n=2), local steroid injection (n=2), median nerve neuromobilisation (n=2), and journals that tested and compared a combination of non-surgical therapies or more than one non-surgical therapy (n=10). Result: This review shows that non-surgical therapies are effective for CTS patients. Conclusion: Various non-surgical treatment for CTS is effective in reducing pain and improving hand functional ability. These therapies can be an optional therapy for dentists with high CTS risk factors.

Abstract

Highlights Dentists are at a higher risk of experiencing symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) compared to non-dental healthcare workers. This is due to repetitive movements, the use of vibrating tools, and prolonged exposure to unergonomic postures. Ergonomic interventions are a key method for preventing CTS in dentists, aiming to reduce the risk of repetitive injuries that can lead to long-term disability.   Abstract Background: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a peripheral mononeuropathy caused by compression of the median nerve. Dentists are susceptible to CTS due to awkward static body postures and ergonomic issues with the wrist, including the use of vibrating instruments, repetitive movements, large muscle forces, and awkward postures such as flexion, extension, and ulnar and radial deviation. Objective: This study aimed to review various studies on ergonomic interventions to prevent CTS in dentists. Material and Method: This research followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines and used PCC framework (Population, Concept, and Context) for article selection process. Inclusion criteria consisted of articles with an experimental research design published between 2011 and 2021. Exclusion criteria included scoping reviews, rapid reviews, systematic reviews, gray literature, and articles that were not fully accessible. All keywords were taken from MeSH terms, and literature searches were conducted using Boolean searches on the PubMed, Wiley, and Google Scholar databases on August 17, 2021. Result: There were limited experimental research articles on CTS in dentists. Out of 887 articles obtained, only five were selected, with a total of 357 participants. The research subjects included general dentists, specialist dentists, and dental hygienists, both with and without CTS. Conclusion: Ergonomic interventions play a crucial role in preventing CTS in dentists. Clinically, these interventions are associated with improved hand function, reduced pain in the wrist/hand, and increased pinch and grip strength.

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are pathological conditions that affect various structures of the musculoskeletal system, including nerves, tendons, muscles, joints, ligaments, and bones. MSDs are common among dentists, with the highest complaints at the neck, shoulders, back, and hands. Musculoskeletal disorders can be caused by a variety of risk factors, and posture while performing dental care procedures is one of them. The prolonged awkward posture performed by the dentist may increase the risk of MSDs. Neck pain, lower back pain (LBP), and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are the most common types of MSDs suffered by dentists. A study revealed that dentists are experiencing lost productivity due to MSDs, caused by musculoskeletal complaints, poor sleep quality, and high stress levels. Therefore, the understanding and implementation of ergonomic principles in dentistry is important for the prevention of MSDs. The use of dental loupes, stretching, and regular exercise can also help maintain the productivity of dentists.
