Abstract

This study aims to investigate the profile of the Indonesian language learning strategies that elementary school students use in terms of types, intercorrelations, and effects on learning outcomes. This was a correlational study. The data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics to obtain the means representing the learning strategies and the inferential statistics consisting of the correlation to find out the intercorrelations of learning strategy categories and the linear regression to find out contributions of learning strategies to learning outcomes. The results show that: (1) the six learning strategies are frequently used with a mean of 3.69, (2) they are significantly interrelated, and (3) they give significant contributions to the language mastery attainment with F 4.552 (p .000).

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the use of children’s stories as media to improve Indonesian language skills of Year 5 elementary school students. This study was an action research study employing the qualitative approach. The design was based on the procedure proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart (1988), consisting of plan, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects comprised teachers and students of SDN Gadang I Malang. The results showed that the learning model using children’s stories in the Indonesian language learning was capable of improving Indonesian language skills of Year 5 elementary school students. This was shown by both their spoken and written performances.

Abstract

This study aims to describe characteristics of child speakers’ communication strategies in their interaction with a variety of interlocutors in a diglossic society. This study was a longitudinal study involving subjects aged 2 – 5 years. The data were collected through observations, recording with an electronic recorder, and field note cards. The data were analyzed using the performance analysis technique. The findings show that characteristics of child speakers’ communication strategies in their interaction with a variety of interlocutors in a diglossic society appear in the types and type variations, causes, and functions of the use in the process of naturallyacquiring the pragmatic competence.
