Abstract

The K-pop industry utilizes music videos (MVs) not only as promotional media but also as multimodal communication platforms that integrate lyrics, visuals, and music to construct narratives and emotional engagement with global audiences. Blue Hour by TXT (Tomorrow X Together) stands out for its use of the blue hour phenomenon as a conceptual foundation that represents a liminal, magical, and temporary experience of transition. This study aims to analyze how meaning is constructed through multimodal interaction in the Blue Hour MV, and how such meaning is organized through representational, interactive, and compositional meanings. This research employs a qualitative interpretative approach with multimodal analysis as its main framework. The findings show that meaning emerges through the integration of modes. Lyrics provide semantic direction, visuals expand it through color, space, and symbols, while music regulates rhythm and emotional intensity. This study confirms that the Blue Hour MV is a complex multimodal construction and demonstrates the potential of natural phenomena as visual concepts in designing coherent, emotional, and meaningful storytelling within digital visual culture.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: In the digital learning era, user interface (UI) design plays an important role in shaping how children engage with educational applications, particularly in early language learning contexts. however, many applications are not fully aligned with children’s cognitive, emotional, and developmental needs. Objective: This study aims to examine how UI design in child-centered language learning applications can be optimized to support children’s cognitive and emotional needs while enhancing learning outcomes. Method: This study adopts a qualitative comparative approach, integrating a literature review, visual analysis of two English-language learning applications (Duolingo ABC and BOOKR Class), semi-structured interviews with three design experts, and focus group discussions with six children aged 5–8. Data were collected through observation, expert validation, and user interaction, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The findings indicate that intuitive, minimal-step navigation reduces cognitive load and supports task completion; balanced color strategies sustain attention without overstimulation; large sans-serif typography improves reading accuracy; and expressive mascots enhance emotional engagement. However, children’s preferences vary across developmental stages, highlighting the need for adaptive rather than standardized design approaches. Conclusion: UI design functions as a pedagogical mediator that influences comprehension, engagement, and early literacy development. The study proposes a child-centered guideline integrating cognitive simplicity, emotional resonance, and context- ensitive design decisions, contributing to educational technology by demonstrating how developmentally aligned interface design can improve both usability and learning effectiveness.

Abstract

The global development of the comic, game, and animation industries has increased the demand for character designs that are not only visually appealing but also possess strong and communicative cultural identities. The problem identified is that local practices of culture-based character design often remain trapped in superficial aesthetic approaches, where cultural elements are used merely as visual ornaments without deep meaning. This research aims to formulate a culture-based character design strategy as a structured visual communication practice, positioning culture as a meaning system translated into visual decisions. The study employs a qualitative approach through theoretical review and in-depth interviews with three professional creators and two design educators active in the creative industry ecosystem. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to map strategic patterns emerging from character design practices. The results formulate four strategic stages: in-depth cultural research, semiotic translation through a symbol bank, inside-out character construction, and interpretative adaptation to popular media. This research concludes that characters function as communication media bridging local cultural identity with global audiences through consistent sign systems, with the main contribution being a perspective shift from aesthetic activity to cultural interpretation practice. Further research is recommended to test the effectiveness of this strategic framework on audience reception and its broader impact on the creative industry.
