Abstract

This study examines the importance and value of Islamic Religious Education for university students, with particular attention to the relationship between personal interest and the necessity of spiritual and moral development in higher education. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation involving students from diverse academic backgrounds. The data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to capture students’ lived experiences. The findings indicate that religious education is not merely perceived as a compulsory subject, but is experienced as a meaningful process that contributes to character formation, moral development, and life balance in the context of rapid technological change. Students’ engagement emerges through the interaction between internal factors, such as personal beliefs, and external influences, including institutional environment and pedagogical practices. Importantly, the study reveals that what initially appears as an academic obligation can develop into personally significant engagement. These findings highlight the dynamic relationship between interest and necessity and suggest the need for more responsive and student-centered approaches in religious education.

Abstract

Literacy activities have increasingly been recognized as a strategic approach in strengthening students’ character within educational settings. This study aims to analyze the role of literacy activities in shaping the character of activeness, curiosity, and appreciation of achievement among seventh-grade students at MTsN 1 Kota Sungai Penuh. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, using observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. Data were analyzed using Miles’ interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that consistently implemented literacy activities enhance students’ activeness, including increased confidence in reading aloud, active participation in discussions, and initiative in accessing reading resources. Students’ curiosity develops through the freedom to choose reading materials, the emergence of critical questioning, and independent exploration of information. In addition, appreciation practices such as praise, recognition of students’ work, and the “most active reader” program foster intrinsic motivation, self-confidence, and a culture of appreciation. The novelty of this study lies in its integrated analysis of literacy activities in developing activeness, curiosity, and appreciation of achievement within a madrasah context. However, this study is limited to a single school setting. The implications suggest that literacy activities can serve as an effective strategy for strengthening students’ character through consistent and contextual implementation.

Abstract

Purpose of the Study: This study aims to evaluate the interest of biology students in attending general education courses, specifically religious subjects, while exploring the impact of various factors such as gender, academic background, and extracurricular involvement. By doing so, it seeks to better understand how these factors influence students' engagement in interdisciplinary education. Methodology: The research adopts a mixed-methods approach. It begins with quantitative analysis, employing descriptive statistics to assess general interest levels, followed by qualitative validation through interviews with seven selected informants. The study population consists of 131 active biology students in the 2023/2024 academic year, with a final sample of 100 after data cleaning. The sampling method used was total sampling to ensure broad representation. Principal Findings: The findings reveal a variety of interest levels among biology students in religious subjects, with no significant differences based on gender, academic semester, high school major, or extracurricular involvement in religious activities or organizations. However, the school of origin emerged as a significant factor, indicating that students' previous educational experiences play a crucial role in shaping their engagement with religious subjects. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This research introduces a novel perspective by uncovering the influence of a student’s educational background specifically, their school origin on their interest in interdisciplinary religious education. It offers new insights into how prior schooling experiences contribute to shaping students’ academic and personal interests, particularly within the context of general education courses, thus providing valuable implications for curriculum design in higher education.
