Abstract

This research investigated the forms of gender discrimination experienced by the female character Jo March in the film "Little Women (2019)" and Jo's efforts against the discrimination in her societal life during the post-Civil War era in America. The study is conducted through a contextual approach and utilizes Simone de Beauvoir's feminist study approach. This research identifies the forms of discrimination experienced by the character Jo March in aspects of work, life, and family. Additionally, the research also reveals the forms of resistance carried out by Jo March in confronting gender discrimination including (1) continuing her work; (2) rejecting gender conventions; (3) pursuing independence in education and financial matters; and (4) advocating for women's rights. This research provides insights into the gender inequality faced by women in America at that time. The findings are expected to inspire women to further advocate for their rights and not give up in the face of the discrimination they experience. This study contributes to the field of gender studies by highlighting the pervasive impact of patriarchal norms on gender discrimination, thereby inspiring women to advocate for their rights and fostering a deeper understanding of gender equality. Additionally, it offers valuable insights for future research, encouraging a broader exploration of feminist issues and the diverse cultural contexts affecting women's roles and autonomy.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the portrayal of feminine slavery in "Redeeming Love," focusing on understanding the underlying motivations and social pressures that lead Sarah to prostitution. This study explores the social phenomena of women being enslaved as prostitutes and the motivations behind their choices, using the movie "Redeeming Love." The study follows a descriptive qualitative method to examine Sarah’s depiction as a feminine slave and her motivations by employing a context-oriented approach. The research utilizes Simone de Beauvoir’s theory of feminine slavery and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to analyze the experiences of the main character, Sarah. The research process involved several steps: first, closely observing the movie; second, focusing on Sarah’s dialogue and actions to discern her depiction and motivations; third, selecting and interpreting dialogues that reflect the concept of feminine slavery and her reasons for engaging in prostitution. The findings reveal that Sarah’s experiences as a prostitute include both external and internal struggles, which align with Beauvoir’s theory of women’s objectification and devaluation by a patriarchal society. The external experience is how Sarah experiences feminine slavery from societal views. The internal experience reflects how Sarah experiences feminine slavery from her personal views. Additionally, the study shows that Sarah, as the main female character, experiences some unfulfilled needs that push her into prostitution. Sarah’s unfulfilled needs are physiological, psychological, esteem, and love-belonging needs. Her unfulfilled needs are caused by her illegitimate status as a child, her father’s abandonment, her poverty, and her inability to meet basic needs due to combined unfulfilled needs. These unfulfilled needs caused her to live as a prostitute. In conclusion, this study provides new insights into the factors contributing to female enslavement and the needs of women in a patriarchal society, enhancing our understanding of the intersection between women’s objectification and their basic and psychological needs.

Abstract

The fourth industrial revolution impacts the education system and student learning. Education must be capable of developing and designing 21st-century life skills learning, one of which is critical thinking abilities. The PBL model is used to guide efforts. This research aims to improve student’s critical thinking through Project-Based Learning (PBL). This research used a quantitative method, which is a quasi-experimental research design, by applying a non-equivalent pre-test post-test control group design. The study was carried out at Semarang City High School. This study’s sample size was 200 students from Semarang City High School. The data were obtained through the critical thinking test. This research used a t-test with a significant level of 0.05 to analyze the data. Based on the research analysis, Students in the control group boosted their critical thinking score by 9.58 points, from 65 to 74.58. Meanwhile, the experimental group students’ critical thinking score jumped by 19.99 points, from 60.77 to 80.76. The increase in the critical thinking score is 10.41. The result also showed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000. This number is less than 0.05. It indicated that is accepted. Based on the result of the Sig. (2-tailed) value t-test calculation, it can be concluded that due to the diverse learning methods applied, there are disparities in students’ critical thinking results with the acceptance. Project-based learning improves students’ critical thinking skills. The conclusion is that the PBL paradigm improves students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study explores the ego defense mechanisms exhibited by the main character in Peter Webber’s film Hannibal Rising, particularly in response to trauma and revenge. Rooted in psychoanalytic theory, the analysis focuses on how the protagonist, Hannibal Lecter, employs various defense mechanisms such as repression, denial, and sublimation to cope with the traumatic events of his past. These mechanisms help him channel his psychological distress into acts of revenge. The study delves deeper into the implications of these defense mechanisms on Hannibal's personality development, examining how trauma shapes his moral descent and fuels his violent tendencies. Additionally, the complex interplay between trauma, psychological defenses, and the protagonist’s relentless drive for retribution is explored, offering a nuanced understanding of his transformation into a morally ambiguous figure. The analysis aims to shed light on how trauma influences not only behavior but also deep psychological processes.

Abstract

This study examines Whitney Houston’s song “The Greatest Love of All” through the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) lens, focusing on the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions outlined by M.A.K. Halliday. The analysis, employing a qualitative methodology, reveals how the lyrics articulate self-empowerment, personal growth, and societal responsibility themes. The ideational metafunction emphasizes the representation of encounters, such as the significance of sustaining future eras and grasping self-love and its transformative potential. The interpersonal metafunction highlights the relationship flow between the singer and the gathering of people, utilizing a high disposition of revelation and methodology to motivate certainty and specialization. In the meantime, the printed metafunction ensures topical coherence and consistency through structural harmony. Thus, revealing the etymological processes in the song, this thought demonstrates how music acts as a powerful means of expressing the passionate and ideological messages that resonate within it.
