Abstract

This study aims to develop speaking media in teaching descriptive text through Scratch Program for seventh grade students at SMPN 27 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development model (R&D) by Borg and Gall (2003) which is simplified into six stages or procedures by Puslitjaknov (2008). The procedures are gathering data and information, analyzing the data, designing media, validating by expert, revising media and final product. The subject of the study was seventh grade students at SMPN 27 Medan. Meanwhile, the study was conducted in class VII-1 that consist of 32 students. The data were collected through a questionnaire. The purpose of using a questionnaire is to extract data from respondents. The developed speaking media was assessed and judged by two experts. The experts are an English lecturer from Universitas Negeri Medan and an English teacher from SMPN 27 Medan. The result data of experts’ validation of speaking media in teaching descriptive text through Scratch Program, the average score of media validation is 95,19%. From the validation, this media got excellent criteria. The media was appropriate to be used by seventh grade students at SMPN 27 Medan. The media is suitable with their needs to make them more attract in studying descriptive text.Key words: Research and Development (R&D), Speaking Media, Descriptive Text, Scratch Program, Seventh Grade Students.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the use of PORPE strategy in teaching reading descriptive text for the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 PercutSei Tuan in the academic year of 2019/2020. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were collected by using observation and interview to the process of PORPE strategy in teaching reading descriptive text and students’ self-predicted essay questions and answers as supported data. The result of observation, interview, and students’ self-predicted essay questions and answers prove that the use of PORPE strategy in teaching reading descriptive text for the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 PercutSei Tuan was 87%. Based on the result, the use of PORPE strategy which was done by the teacher were well-structured. Thus, the reason why PORPE considered to be applied because PORPE is appropriate in teaching reading descriptive text. The strategy made students more critical towards the questions because in every step they had to think critically and remember all the key points in the passage. The data were analyzed by using Sugiyono (2008) theory. It was supported that the percentage of each steps of PORPE strategy were predict (89%), organize (83%), rehearse (67%), practice (100%), and evaluate (100%). This showed that the students were interested in PORPE strategy and the average of students’ score of self-predicted essay questions and answers was 91. This number is categorized as good according to Nurgiyantoro’s Criterion Referenced Evaluation. Thus, PORPE strategy is effective and appropriate to be used in reading text, particularly descriptive text.Keywords: PORPE strategy, reading, descriptive text.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop the appropriate English reading materials in report text for students of electrical engineering program at SMK Negeri 2 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design. The data were gathered by distributing questionnaires to 35 students of electrical engineering program and administering interview to the teacher. The result of this study was a set of developed teaching reading materials as supplementary entitled “English for Electrical Engineering Students” which covers of three chapters on the topics of (1) things in electrical about hammer drill, (2) natural phenomena about lightning and aurora, (3) social phenomena about short circuit and electric shock. It is also accompanied by documents such as syllabus, lesson plans, reading materials, worksheets, and assessments. Key words:Research and Development (R&D), Reading Materials, Report Text, Vocational School, Electrical Engineering Program.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the types of teacher pedagogical misconduct and the reasons of teacher pedagogical misconduct. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The data were the result of questionnaire and interviewing of English teacher at SMP Swasta Josua Medan. The data were analyzed based on types of teacher pedagogical misconduct by Kearney and reason of teacher pedagogical misconduct by Riley and Lewis. The findings showed that there were three types of teacher pedagogical misconduct. They were indolence, incompetence, and offensiveness. Moreover, the dominant category of indolence is changing assignments every time, while failure to treat student properly is in incompetence and involving sarcasm in offensiveness. The teacher conducted pedagogical misconduct due to treat students differently, teaching in sharp sarcasm technique, restricted, releasing anger and hardly braid good relationship.Keywords: teacher pedagogical misconduct, teaching English

Abstract

This research is to explore the students’ motivation in learning English. Student who has high motivation would do the best in learning even though the materials were felt difficult. The aims of this research is to identify the factor that influence students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and students’ motivation levels in writing analytical exposition text through Scratch Program. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative nature. The researcher presented eight items of interview and twenty items of questionnaire. The participants of the research were fifteen students at eleventh grade administration class in SMK Bina Bersaudara Medan. The data were obtained through interview and questionnaires to the students related to their motivation in learning writing text. The findings of this research were found that ten students have the intrinsic motivation and five students have the extrinsic motivation. To decide students in to intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, there are the factors that determine types of students’ motivation in eleventh grade of SMK Bina Bersaudara. First factor of intrinsic motivation were 1) self-desire, 2) Satisfaction, 3) Challenge/Competition, and 4) Good Habit. Seconds the factors of extrinsic motivation were 1) teacher, Parent, and Environment, 2) Reward, and 3) Punishment. In summary, students in eleventh grade of SMK Bina Bersaudara mostly have the dominant motivation of intrinsic than extrinsic motivation. Then, the result discussed about the level of students’ motivation, it was found that the students’ level of motivation is high (4.4). Therefore, it can be concluded that the students’ motivation in learning English in writing analytical exposition text through Scratch Program were in high category.Keywords: Students’ Motivation; Intrinsic Motivation; Extrinsic Motivation; Level of Motivation; Scratch Program.

Abstract

This research aimed to develop a formative assessment on procedure text through Socrative for tenth grade students at MAN 2 Model Medan. This research was conducted because it was found that the student still use the traditional formative assessment. The research followed the Research and Development (R&D) method, consisting of six stages: gathering information and data, analyzing the data, designing the media, validating by experts, revising, and producing the final product. The subjects of the study included 36 students from class X-N and one of the English teacher. The data were collected by interviewing the English teacher and administering a questionnaire to the students to assess their needs. The results indicated that the students need a developing of formative assessment through Socrative. The product was validated by two experts: an English lecturer and an English teacher. The validation process included evaluating linguistic aspects, the assessment process, the product and content, and the layout of the media. The product received an overall validation score of 93.95%, indicating that the formative assessment developed through Socrative is suitable for use in the classroom. Based on this validation, the formative assessment is considered effective and appropriate for improving the learning experience of tenth grade students at MAN 2 Model Medan, particularly in enhancing their understanding of reading procedure texts.
