Abstract

The objective of this study is to ascertain the efficacy of printed media, specifically posters, in enhancing farmers' understanding of pest and disease control in paddy rice plants. The study population consisted of all rice farmers in Lambudoni Village, Andowia Subdistrict, with a total of 187 farmers comprising nine farmer groups. The number of research samples was determined using the Slovin formula with a degree of error set at 15% (0.15), resulting in a sample size of 36 respondents. The research sample was selected through the use of the simple random sampling method. The data collection techniques involved the distribution of posters regarding the control of pests and diseases of paddy rice plants, accompanied by a list of questions in the form of a questionnaire. The data were subjected to descriptive and quantitative analysis. This research was designed as a true experimental design with a pre-test post-test control group. Subsequently, the efficacy of the media can be evaluated through the implementation of a media effectiveness test. The results demonstrated that the utilization of printed media in the form of posters in agricultural extension activities, with a composition of 60:40 (picture: writing), has been proven to be an effective approach in enhancing the knowledge of wetland rice farmers in controlling pests and diseases in Lambudoni Village, Andowia District, North Konawe Regency. The composition of a poster is an important factor in conveying messages and extension information to farmers. The use of images on a poster can help farmers to focus more on the information presented and to understand the content more easily.

Abstract

This study examines the role of social capital in enhancing yellow corn farmer groups in Wakadia Village, Watopute Subdistrict, Muna Regency. Despite abundant natural resources, Indonesia's agricultural sector faces challenges like import dependency, underscoring the need for robust farmer group development to boost productivity and food security. Social capital, encompassing trust, participation, and networks, is pivotal in fostering collaboration and resource access among farmers. The research, involved 66 yellow corn farmers selected via purposive sampling from seven farmer groups in Wakadia, a key corn production hub. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, documentation, and literature reviews, with questionnaires as the primary tool. The study employed class interval analysis to assess social capital and farmer group development, and Spearman rank correlation to evaluate their relationship. Findings indicate strong social capital (87.87%) and well-developed farmer groups (95.45%), driven by active participation, trust in group leadership, and robust networks facilitating access to technology and markets. A significant positive correlation (0.770, p=0.00) exists between social capital and group development, suggesting that higher social capital enhances group progress. Challenges include limited marketing networks, which hinder income optimization. Strengthening social capital through training, expanded partnerships, and improved facilities is recommended to sustain agricultural development.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the influence of social capital on the performance of rice farming in Punggaluku Village, Laeya District, South Konawe Regency. The research population consists of all rice farmers in Punggaluku Village, with a total of 140 individuals. The determination of the sample size for this study was made using the Slovin formula, with a margin of error set at 10%. Therefore, the sample size was determined to be 58 respondents. The sampling method employed was a simple random sampling technique. The data presented herein was collected through a variety of research techniques, including in-depth interviews, meticulous documentation analysis, a thorough review of existing literature, and the administration of surveys. The research variables consisted of exogenous variables (social capital) and endogenous variables (farming performance). The collected data underwent a dual analytical process, comprising a preliminary descriptive statistical evaluation, followed by an inferential statistical examination. The results of the study indicate that social capital, particularly social norms and networks, is well established among the community involved in rice farming. Most farmers actively practice social norms and networks, such as attending farmer group meetings and complying with cultivation rules, as well as building strong networks through easy access to information, both from fellow farmers and external institutions. Meanwhile, the aspect of trust is considered adequate, indicating room for improvement in mutual trust among group members and extension workers. The performance of rice farming, as measured by the quantity and quality of farmers' work, has been carried out well, while timeliness remains in the adequate category. Social capital has a positive and significant impact on farming performance, as indicated by the simple linear regression coefficient (β = 1.049). Social capital, as a non-material resource comprising norms, networks, and trust, has a tangible impact on the productivity and effectiveness of farming.

The research population consists of all women fishermen who are members of women fishermen groups in Lapulu Village, with a total sample size of 30 individuals. The sample was determined using a census method. The data were collected through a variety of methods, including in-depth interviews, documentation analysis, a review of existing literature, and the administration of surveys. The variables in this study were social capital, defined as a multifaceted concept encompassing trust, social norms, and networks. The collected data were then subjected to a quantitative statistical analysis, employing descriptive statistical analysis methods. The results of the study indicate that the application of social capital among women fishermen in Lapulu Village is in the good category, with a dominance in the dimension of trust (83%), followed by social norms (70%), and social networks (43%). The elevated level of trust fosters cooperation, information disclosure, and solidarity among members. The concept of social norms is exemplified by the adherence to group rules and cultural practices, such as the act of praying prior to engaging in business activities. Concurrently, constrained access to technology and inadequate educational attainment contribute to suboptimal utilization of social networks. The elements of social capital are effectively implemented by combining the local wisdom of the fishing community with digital literacy, which can serve as a key to enhancing the sustainable empowerment of female fishermen.
