Abstract

This study investigates the pedagogical effectiveness of the Make-a-Match cooperative learning technique in enhancing English speaking proficiency among tenth-grade students at SMK Negeri 7 Watampone, Indonesia. The research addresses persistent instructional challenges in EFL classrooms, such as speaking anxiety, limited vocabulary, and low student confidence. Employing a one-group pretest-posttest pre-experimental design, the study measures improvements in accuracy, fluency, and comprehensibility using CEFR-aligned performance-based assessments. Findings reveal statistically significant gains in all speaking components, with the greatest improvement in comprehensibility. These outcomes validate Make-a-Match as a student-centered, interactive pedagogical approach that fosters active engagement, peer collaboration, and contextual language use. Moreover, the study underscores the alignment of this technique with Kurikulum Merdeka and 21st-century educational goals, reinforcing its value in vocational education where communicative competence is vital for employability. It also contributes to the broader discourse on innovative learning strategies by highlighting Make-a-Match as a sustainable instructional model that enhances not only language proficiency but also students' psychological readiness and social interaction skills. The findings offer practical insights for educators, curriculum designers, and policy stakeholders aiming to improve the quality and inclusivity of language education.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between extroversion and speaking proficiency among 27 pre-service English teachers at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong. Using a correlational research design, data were collected through the Revised-Short Form Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQR-S) and a speaking skills test using a rubric by O'Malley (1996). The data were analysed using SPSS version 27 and Pearson product-moment correlation techniques. The results reveal an insignificant negative correlation (r = -0.108, p > 0.05) between extroversion and speaking skills, indicating no substantial link between these variables. Most students displayed moderate extroversion, but their speaking scores predominantly fell into the "enough" and "poor" categories. Highly extroverted students could have consistently achieved better speaking proficiency. Personalized teaching strategies are recommended to address students' diverse needs. Extroverted learners benefit from group discussions and collaborative projects, while introverted students perform better in quieter settings, such as one-on-one discussions or recorded tasks. These tailored approaches can enhance confidence and improve speaking skills across personality types. Further research is needed to explore other factors influencing pre-service teachers’ speaking skills.

Abstract

Post-harvest corn residues in rural areas are often underutilized, creating environmental burdens while leaving economic potential untapped. This community service program aimed to strengthen the technical, managerial, and marketing capacities of the Pationgi Village community through a desapreneur model based on corn-waste valorization under the zero-waste principle. Key problems faced by partners included low utilization of corn residues, limited access to appropriate technology, and weak skills in processing and marketing value-added products. The program was implemented from September to November 2025 through socialization, intensive training, tool demonstrations, and structured mentoring for two partner groups: the Madeceng Farmers Group and the Makkiade Youth Organization. Three appropriate technologies were introduced and applied, namely PIPILLER, EXTRAFEED, and PIROLIN. The results showed that shelling capacity increased from 80–120 kg/day to 350–480 kg/day, while kernel damage decreased from 15–20% to <5%, accompanied by a reported 12–15% increase in selling value. Partners were also able to produce 150 kg of fermented feed per production session (monthly output ≥150 kg) and generate 10–15 kg of biochar and 3–5 liters of liquid smoke per ±3-hour pyrolysis cycle. Product diversification by the youth group resulted in 10 boxes of corn-silk tea, 20 corn-husk flower crafts, and 5 village-based handicrafts. Evaluation indicated highly positive responses, with all indicators falling within the “agree–strongly agree” categories, although improvement is still needed in tool-component literacy and product packaging. Overall, the program demonstrates that integrating appropriate technology with participatory mentoring can transform corn waste into value-added products and support sustainable rural economic opportunities

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the language attitudes of Muhammadiyah Bone University students towards the use of English in the campus environment. With a quantitative approach through distributing questionnaires, data was collected from students of the English Language Education Department. The research results show that the majority of students have a positive attitude towards English, which is reflected in the cognitive, affective and conative components. This finding is in line with previous research conducted at various universities, such as Diponegoro University, Muhammadiyah University Gresik, and Manado State University, which also confirmed that a positive attitude plays an important role in supporting English language mastery. The implications of this research can be the basis for developing bilingual policies on campus as well as improving supporting facilities such as language laboratories.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of code-switching in English language learning in the English Language Education Department of Muhammadiyah University of Bone. Code-switching occurs naturally in interactions between lecturers and students in a multilingual context using English, Indonesian, and Buginese. This phenomenon is understood as a communication strategy that plays an important role in supporting material understanding and a smooth learning process. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques in the form of classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The results show that the dominant forms of code-switching are intrasentential and intersentential switching. Code-switching functions pedagogically to explain complex concepts and reduce language anxiety, and socially to build familiarity and affirm cultural identity, thus contributing positively to the English language learning process.
