Abstract

One of the prominent issues in pragmatics is politeness. Politeness can manifest in two actions, verbal and non-verbal communication. This study aimed to analyze the lecturer's and the students' non-verbal communication (NVC) in supporting the realization of Brown & Levinson's politeness strategies in English classroom interaction at Universitas Muhammadiyah Purworejo. This study explains the lecturer’s and students’ NVC in supporting the realization of bald on record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, off-record strategy, and don’t do the face-threatening act (FTA) strategy in English classroom interaction. In this study, the researchers applied qualitative research. The subjects were one English lecturer and students. The objects were the lecturer's and the students' utterances during the English learning process. The methods the researchers used to analyze the data were Brown & Levinson's (1987) politeness strategies theory and Novinger's (2001) NVC theory. The findings showed that politeness strategies were used by the lecturer and students with the total frequency of 559 times, namely bald on record, positive politeness (dominantly used), negative politeness, off-record, and don’t do the FTA (the least used). Besides, in supporting the realization of politeness strategy, the dominantly used methods of NVC were chronemics, kinesics, and vocalic. In conclusion, politeness strategies are crucial in maintaining the relationship and creating a comfortable environment in the EFL classroom. NVC can support performance that cannot be expressed in words.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to analyze the adaptation of terminologies, vocabularies and phrases from English to Indonesian. The research was descriptive qualitative research in order to answer the research problem definitely. The data of the study were taken from a biography written by Tracy Wright Webster entitled Reflection on Raden Ajeng Kartini, while the translation is done by the author itself. The total number of data found was 75 Javanese cultural concepts. Then, the data were grouped into several culture categories before presented in the analysis. The result shows that there are three basic aspects that determine the translator in carrying the adaptation strategy with the Javanese culture. Those aspects are cultural factor, linguistic factor and the translator's preference. The aspects influencing the translation strategy that the translator carries is language and Indonesian modern history. In conclusion, the translation strategy of adaptation that is carried by the translator is actually dynamic. It is because in translating the Javanese cultural concepts are alternated or even hybridized, depending upon the translator's intention whether she wants to introduce the cultural concepts to the TL reader or not. However, apart from the limitation of the biography of Reflection on Raden Ajeng Kartini translation, the English version is still important for foreigners to know more about Indonesian history, culture and society.

Abstract

This paper discusses arboreal poetics in two contemporary poems The Thought of Trees by Howard Nemerov, an American poet and Lessons of a Tree by Luis H. Francia, a Filipino one. The objectives of this research are first to identify how Nemerov and Francias vegetal poetics conveys ecological views; second, how their vegetal poetics evokes ones ecological awareness to conserve biodiversity and to consume material goods sufficiently. These behaviors help to reduce the exacerbation of climate change phenomenon. This research used qualitative methods, in which the data were words and taken from the two poems and from several sources on trees, climate change, ecopoetry as a kind of criticism belonging to environmental humanities. The result shows that both poems anthropomorphize trees as indispensably interconnected and coexistent with any life forms and the physical environment. This further impacts on humans growing ecological conscience not to objectify but to conserve vegetation in particular and other natural resources in general through his sufficient consumption of the material goods for ones living necessities.

Abstract

Ecocide has been a classic anthropogenic phenomenon from time to time, It dated from the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century to the present post-industrial era of digital technology. This anthropogenic activity correlates with an overconsumption of material things such as fossil fuels and other earth minerals. Despite the merit, these subterranean minerals in fact contain toxic particles that have detrimental impacts on any life form and the physical environment. This study discusses Allen Ginsberg’s poem “Ballade of Poisons” and Adam Dickinson’s “Agents Orange, Yellow, and Red” as two poetic texts from different periods, the modern and contemporary ones. The purpose of the study is to highlight how these two poems polemicize the anthropogenic overuse of material and chemical products as ecocide that wreaks havoc on any life form. The study uses close reading method by examining ecological aspects in the poems and then contextualize these aspects within ecopoetic perspectives by referring to some notions such as material transcorporeality and its intrusion on human’s body. Poetry as one literary genre becomes an agent of social change and an ecological epiphany in this present posthuman precarity. Ginsberg’s “Ballade of Poisons” and Dickinson’s “Agents Orange, Yellow, and Red” then serve as an agent to actualize epiphany in this present ecological precarity. Their epiphanic poetics evokes one’s instantaneous awareness of the hazards of material overuse and of the insubstantial natures of these things through the human’s material objectification.

Abstract

Conversation Analysis is an issue of Pragmatics. It is a way to analyze a conversation by its elements, such as turn-taking and adjacency pair produced by the speakers. In this present study, we conducted research in the field of conversation analysis. More specifically, we investigated the adjacency pair patterns, the meaning of the patterns, and the implicature of the patterns in the spoken interaction of the Ancora Meet discussion with Nadiem Anwar Makarim, Minister of Education and Culture of Indonesia, the Republic of Indonesia. This research investigates how adjacency pairs patterned in Ancora Meet’s interview with Nadiem Anwar Makarim, how meaning is made through the patterns, and how the implicature resulted from using the patterns. This present study used a qualitative method. We found eight patterns of adjacency pair construct in Ancora Meet, and then three maxims were realized in the discussion. This study also reveals some patterns. Individuals prefer to communicate information implicitly rather than explicitly. Particularised dialogue implicature dominance in the discussion is evidence that speakers are connected to the context to implicate utterances in their current conversation. The particularised conversation implicature’s violation of the maxim is evidence of a significant relationship between context and cooperative principles. Conversation implicatures are almost always connected to the context. Finally, we discovered 42 instances of Minister Nadiem’s implicature, demonstrating that, for the most part, conversational implicature is always connected to context. Meanwhile, in practical contribution, this research can be used as a reference in teaching English, especially speaking.

Abstract

Online English teaching and learning during the pandemic is challenging for teachers and students. One of the problems encountered by teachers is maintaining students’ involvement in class discussions. To maintain students’ involvement, it is important to implement strategies that meet students’ needs. This study aims at describing students’ objective and subjective needs in learning English. This study was descriptive qualitative in nature. It was conducted at SD Daniel Creative School, Semarang. 184 students and 6 English teachers were involved in this study. This study used a questionnaire, classroom observation sheet, and interview as the instruments. The result revealed that for objective needs, many students still needed help in mastering some areas, such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar. For subjective needs, many students had low self-confidence and self-esteem in learning English. In addition, the students also mentioned their expectations of teachers’ teaching strategies. The observation showed that the strategies implemented by the teachers were effective to fulfill students’ needs and to encourage their involvement in class discussions. Unfortunately, the teachers did not implement all the strategies consistently to fulfill students’ needs. As the result, students’ involvement was still low. Thus, this study implies a suggestion for English teachers of the school and English teachers, in general, to consistently implement teaching strategies that meet students’ needs to encourage students’ involvement.

Here, political situation is used because of the condition of controlled situation must be different. This study aimed to compare the conversational features used by Joe Biden and Donald Trump in the final presidential election debate of America in 2020. This was a qualitative study using the conversational analysis approach proposed by Schegloff (1974). The data were analyzed based on the conversational features used including turn-taking strategies, adjacency pairs, and repairs. The results found there were some similarities and differences of conversational features used by both candidates. The similarities showed both speakers preferred to use most of all turn-taking strategies, types of first and second-pair parts, and repair strategies. Besides, the differences were found in the number of conversational features used. Donald Trump tent to use more features since he used more turn-taking strategy to take the turn during the debate. In sum, in political setting, people tend to take more turn to share their idea and respond the other. It affects the use of another conversational features including the frequency of using them. Furthermore, the result of comparing using three features in a political situation becomes the novelty of this research since this setting is a rare topic in conversation analysis. This result is also contributed on enriching references of future research using conversation analysis specifically in a political setting.

Abstract

Politeness cannot be achieved directly when people are born because of genetic factors or special characteristics given by God. It needs to be learned, and they should consider whom they speak to establish a good relationship between the speaker (S) and hearer (H) in the social interaction. This study aims to explain the similarities and differences between the use of positive politeness strategies by Ellen in her interaction with adult and young guests. The transcript of Ellen’s talk show becomes the primary source of this study where the data were analyzed by using Brown and Levinson’s theory. This study was descriptive qualitative research with a pragmatic approach. Based on the data analysis, Ellen applied noticing, exaggerating, and intensifying interest to H, using in-group identity markers, seeking agreement, asserting common ground, being optimistic, including S and H in the activity, and giving gifts in her communication with adult and young guests. The strategy of using in-group identity markers is frequently used in Ellen’s interaction with a percentage of 27,8%. In addition, in Ellen’s interaction with the young guests, the noticing strategy is the most dominant strategy with a percentage of 25%. The strategies of avoiding disagreement, joking, promising, and giving reasons were only applied in her interaction with the adult guests. Therefore, Ellen’s decision to use these positive politeness strategies can save the hearers’ positive face and maintain the relationship among them. As a result, this study contributes to English language teaching in class interaction, especially in fulfilling the students’ positive face.
