Abstract

This article discusses on popularfiction applying Bakhtin’s theory, that is pseudo-objective motivation. Thismotivation is writing composition which author applies and it relates toideology. Here, I found that the charaters of Mercy Street and Cry Mercypractice capitalism ideology. This ideological practices becomes norm in thenovels, because they think wrong if they do not practice it. The norms orvalues are known as work ethics. The norms are individualism, working hard,discipline, frugality, honest, and independent. Pseudo-objective motivation iscategorized into common view, subordinate conjunction and linking words, andcollective voice. Abstract

This article discusses on popular fiction entitled Mercy Street by Mariah Stewart. Itapplies ideology theory by Louise Althusser and capitalism ideology by MaxWeber. Althusser discusses ideology which consists of representation,existence, and practice. Moreover, Weber argues on capitalism ideology which isimplied in daily life. It constructs work ethic. The work ethic derived fromcapitalism ideology are discipline, work hard, frugality, honesty andindividualism. Abstract

Cerpen Interpreter of Maladies karya Jhumpa Lahiri merupakan salah satu bentuk naratif yang merupakan hasil rekaan dari seorang penulis. Cerita rekaan ini berkisah tentang pengalaman seorang interpreter yang juga bekerja sebagai pemandu wisata, bertemu dengan keluarga keturunan India dari Amerika Serikat. Cerita pendek tersebut disoroti pada elemen kejadian-kejadian yang diceritakan di dalamnya. Kejadian-kejadian dalam cerpen disampaikan oleh  tokoh-tokoh protagonis. Dengan menerapkan teori fokalisasi yang digagas oleh Gerard Genette, fokalisasi membedakan antara mood dan voice. Letak fokalisasi berada pada posisi mood karena menggunakan perspektif tokoh yang melihat. Cerpen Interpreter of Maladies menerapkan internal focalization, yang mana para tokohnya yaitu; Tuan Kapasi dan Nyonya Das berperan sebagai focalizer yaitu pihak yang perspektifnya digunakan dalam mengutarakan kejadian-kejadian yang dialami dan dilihatnya. Selain itu, narator berada di luar cerita karena perannya dalam cerpen Interpreter of Maladies hanya menyampaikan kejadian-kejadian saja. Narator tersebut termasuk dalam covert narator karena tidak diketahui identitasnya. Key words: focalization, Gennete, mood, perspektif, Interpreter of Maladies

Abstract

This study explores students understanding on gender. It starts from reading a fairy tale text (prose) entitled Cinderella by Grimm Brothers. From reading the fairy tale, the study goes to the students’ opinion on gender which they found in the text and in society. It also applies feminism ideology to reveal students’ opinion on gender. Gender differ man’s and woman’s values created by patriarchy society. It impacts on woman’s position. Woman becomes less value than man. Fairy tale as one of prose is often used by parents and teachers to teach good values and behavior to conduct live in society. Cinderella as a famous classic fairy tale is used to teach them.     This study took the data from the second semester students of Faculty of Language and Cultural Study Unisbank, academic year 2014/2015. Seventeen (17) students who are five males and twelve females attended the test. The result shows that Cinderella is known since they were children from various media; TV, movie, and book. Parents also have important role to acknowledge the story. It influenced their opinions on gender which tend to patriarchy ideology. They could not have left the dominant ideology, patriarchy. Abstract

This article discusses on gender discourse found in parenting articles of on-line parenting tabloid. The articles tell about how to take care children at below five years old. Articles in parenting tabloid inform to young parents about children’s and mother’s health and growth.  The data are taken from caring children articles of Indonesian parenting tabloids. It focuses on articles on children’s growth and health, which traditionally becomes mother’s responsibility. Nowadays, there is change in caring children also used as slogan for some parenting tabloids and magazines that is parenthood. Caring children is not completely handled by mother, but father also should contribute his role in it. The data used are analyzed the contribution of mother or parents in caring the children as addressed subject in the articles. In fact, today supports parenthood as the ideal way caring children. Caring children based on gender give social impact. It creates defensive masculinity on men, and they defend the domination.   The data found still show motherhood in caring children, although the tabloids claim as parenting tabloids. Mentioning mother as the target to do what they suggest dominates the data. Some data present parents as the addressed in the beginning, but in the next paragraphs they address mother as the target of the articles. This tabloid has not left old paradigm in caring children into parenthood yet.Key words: motherhood, parenting tabloid, caring, nurturing

Abstract

This research discussed on point of view applied in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Black Cat. It is a short story that Poe wrote using the first person narrator to tell it. This narrator needs to be explored the position, events of the story, and agenda which he hides. Qualitative research is applied to conduct this research. Edgar V. Roberts’ writing on point of view is the guide in conducting this research. The researchers need to read and identify the point of view, position of the narrator, events, and hidden agenda. It also needs to interpret the data found in The Black Cat text. The data show the first person narrator of The Black Cat put him as the unreliable narrator. It is based on the position in physical, mental, social, and economic circumstances that make the readers, here the researchers disbelieve in his utterances. The short story depicts eighteen events which involve the narrator as the major mover, the subject, and the main character of the story. It can be called that the information is the first hand experience that he wrote in a letter in a cell jail a day before he gets death sentence. This information leads the readers that he needs to get sympathy from his letter’s readers.Keywords: The Black Cat, point of view, first person narrator, unreliable

Abstract

Pendidikan Karakter merupakan tujuan dari diimplementasikannya KBK pada tahun 2006 dan menjadi K13 pada tahun 2013. Pemerintah menekankan tujuan akhir pendidikan mulai dari jenjang PAUD hingga PT yaitu mencetak SDM Indonesia yang berkarakter. Tujuan akhir ini dapat dicapai melalui berbagai macam jenis pembelajaran sehingga semua siswa akan mendapatkan pengalaman belajar sesuai dengan yang telah diajarkan baik di dalam kelas maupun di luar kelas. Berbagai macam metode pembelajaran juga juga penting untuk dilaksanakan, dan salah satu diantaranya adalah mendongeng. Mendongeng merupakan jenis pembelajaran bagi PAUD dari jenjang KB hingga TKB. Mendongeng cerita tentang Pahlawan Nasional Indonesia khusunya kaum perempuan yaitu Raden Ajeng Kartini bukan hal yang mudah namun dengan kreatifitas guru siswa PAUD akan belajar untuk memahaminya. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data melalui pengamatan, wawancara dan semacam mini PTK yang dilakukan melalui perekaman video, pemotretan dan penulisan data. Analisa data dilakukan berdasar teori tentang mendongeng dan PAUD. Hasil penelitian berupa adanya perubahan karakter siswa PAUD walaupun hanya singkat namun dengan proses internalisasi semua siswa akhirnya akan dapat melaksanakan nilai-nilai perjuangan Kartini. Abstract

This study is descriptive qualitative study, the focus of discussion is the archetypes of the characters in the short story “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry 1905. This short story represents a love story of a married couple who life in the low economic condition. The main characters are Jim as the husband and Della as the wife. It focuses on the explanation on the characters they have. There are some types of psichologycal study by Carl Jung (1953) that can be used to analyze, but the researcher only choose archetypes with three kinds: Ego, Soul, and Self. The researcher found the characteristics and the types archetypes they have. The most archetypes found is the Lover, it might happens because they are couple and the story tells about their struggle in doing the life together after married. This is also make the reader realize that love does not only come from something luxury, but also from suffering together. The result in this study is archetypes can be found in everytone. This sudy might give and improve the knowledge about artcehtypes for the researcher and readers.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The study analyze how the political discrimination happen in Royal Family and how the main character response from her action to get the throne. This study used Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement movie as the data. This study used qualitative method. In collecting the data the researcher watched the movie and read the script. The theory used in this study is Kate Millet: Sexual Politics. Millet’s theory provides that sex is politic. It means the relationship of women in society with men is a political relationship, a relationship that is based on the structure of power, namely a group of people which is controlled and dominated by other humans. The findings show that the main character gets political discrimination from The Royal Parliaments and there is an ambition from a third part who wants to overthrow position in the first place in the throne. The researcher has found the action of female characters to gain the throne in this movie. There are some activities that Mia should learn to be a queen. Mia learns to practice all outdoor activities with the traditions of the Genovian Royal Family. Starting from learning archery to prepare for the night of ceremony when she later took the throne, and horse riding as a review Royal Guard. The end of the movie, Mia asking all member of The Royal Parliaments to change that law who purpose a woman to get married first before she gets the throne. Abstract

Abstract The study reveals woman oppression in The Conduct of Life by Maria Irene Fornes. The purpose of this paper is to describe feminist character of Maria Irene Fornes’s The Conduct of Life by analyzing the female character. This study applied qualitative study and applied feminist theory of Kate Millet (1969) in her book entitled Sexual Politics. The data were collected by reading the text of drama comprehensively and taking some notes on important words, sentences, and narration that relate to the topic. After analyzing the data, it can be concluded that the female character in Maria Irene Fornes The Conduct of Life accepted oppression because of the low level of law that imposed in the 19th century, disregarding of society that is known as patriarchy.
