Abstract

Spoken communication demands the students' intelligible pronunciation of English speech sounds since unintelligible pronunciation hampers successful communication. However, the pronunciation of English speech sounds is problematic for many EFL learners even after years of learning English. The pronunciation problem is more complex when the speech sounds occur in a text. This is because, in an English class, the focus of pronunciation practice is usually on isolated words, phrases and sentences. Thus, they find difficulties when they apply the words, phrases, and sentences in a text. This study focused on teaching English diphthongs using the text-based approach. It investigated how text-based teaching can enhance the EFL students’ mastery to pronounce English diphthongs in a text. This study is an experimental design, comparing two groups of students’ pronunciation competence taught with genre/text-based approach and conventional approach. The research results revealed the effectiveness of text-based teaching since there was a significant difference in the students' competence taught with text-based teaching compared to those taught with the conventional method. Drilling techniques which were also applied played a vital role in the pronunciation practice. Based on the conclusion above, it is recommended that English teachers apply the text-based approach and drilling techniques as an alternative strategy to teach English diphthongs.

Abstract

The current study examined the use of Code-Switching in WhatsApp Group (WAG) to find out what codes were used and switched among users of WA and in particular to identify the rationales for such a discursive practice in their communication amid Covid-19 Pandemic. Data for this study were screenshots of linguistic exchanges in WAG over a period of two days (weekend). Theoretical  framework  for  the  use  of Code- Switching was highlighted as the basis of data analysis. Findings reveal  that most members of WAG employ intrasentential code-switching.  Regarding the rationales of code-switching, most members used code- switching to talk about particular topics and to show emphaty. The study concludes that code switching is a social reality in a multilingual and multicultural society of diverse educational background. It is highly recommended that similar studies be conducted in some wider and more diverse strata of people in the use of CS to support a newly coined term ‘Permanent Code Switching’ (PCS).

Abstract

Abstract Background: To live in this communicative era, people need to have communicative competence. The main aim of ELT is to enable the students to communicate or to produce a text. Thus, EFL teaching needs to facilitate them to achieve communicative competence so that they can participate actively in their communities. EFL teachers can utilize text-based teaching to realize this. Text-based teaching involves the use of texts, which are context bases for achieving communicative competence. This paper is a reflection, describing the teachers' common problems in implementing text-based teaching, especially under the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: This study is qualitative survey research to gain in-depth information about the topic of the study. The goal of this study is to describe the teachers' perception of Text-Based Approach in ELT and to describe their challenges to implement text-based online teaching. Open-ended survey questions were delivered to 15 research participants. To get a comprehensive understanding of the research participants' opinions, the researchers followed up their answers with an interview via a telephone call. Findings: The questionnaire, interview, and teachers’ self-written reflection revealed the teachers’ common problems in implementing text-based teaching, i.e. in selecting texts, in adapting or in modifying texts, in designing tasks, in overcoming students’ boredom, besides the problems of online teaching. Conclusion: The main root of the problems is the teachers' lack of knowledge of text-based approach. Thus, updating the teachers' knowledge can be one of the solutions to the problems.

Abstract

Sex-based discrimination includes gender discrimination. The fundamental cause of gender discrimination against women is that patriarchal ideology shapes society’s attitudes and behaviors. This study examines how women are treated differently because of their gender in the novel Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982. This study aims to find out the types and impacts of gender discrimination against women in the novel. This study is categorized as qualitative research and uses a feminism approach. The feminism theory presented in Simone de Beauvoir’s book The Second Sex (1949) is used by the researcher to analyze the novel. The researcher discovered two types of gender discrimination in Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982; gender discrimination in domestic spaces and gender discrimination in public spaces. The five different forms of gender discrimination in domestic spaces are; (1) the expectation that women should have male offspring, (2) the favoritism toward sons over daughters, (3) the idea that sons are the ones who ensure the success of the family, (4) woman as a reproducer, and (5) woman as a housewife. The novel also shows three forms of gender discrimination in public spaces; (1) discrimination toward women in school, (2) discrimination toward women in the workplace, and (3) sexual harassment of women. Furthermore, the main character, Kim Ji-Young, experiences gender discrimination against women, and the impacts of the gender discrimination on Kim Ji-Young are feeling inferior and experiencing mental changes. Abstract

Abstract. This study aimed at finding out the impoliteness strategy produced by the characters in Paranorman movie. Employing a pragmatic analytical framework, this study is qualitative. The data were utterances produced by the characters in Paranorman movie, whereas the contexts were dialogues. The research used Paranorman movie script and movie as sources. The researcher was the primary instrument, with the datasheet as a secondary. The researcher collected data by analyzing documents by note-taking. The data were analyzed using a reference (pragmatic inference). The research findings reveal the following. First, the characters in Paranorman use four kinds of impoliteness strategies. They are bald on record, positive, negative, and sarcastic. Second, each impoliteness strategy has its own representation. Direct, clear, and unambiguous statements are used to express impoliteness. Positive impoliteness occurs as disassociating from others, calling the other names, and using  taboo words. Negative impoliteness occurs as condescending, scorning, or ridiculing the other. Sarcasm or mock politeness is only performed by using insincere politeness. This is the most representation. Third, the movie shows three responses, namely no response, accepting, and countering the face attack. Countering a face attack has two parts, namely offensive and defensive. Keywords: impoliteness strategy, negative impoliteness, positive impolitenessAbstrak. Abstract

This study aims to reveal hybridity and liminality in Jhumpa Lahiri's short story entitled A Temporary Matter. This research is a qualitative research with a postcolonial approach. The theory used in this research is postcolonialism theory by Homi K. Bhabha. The methods applied in this study include data collection methods and data analysis methods. The data obtained were taken from the speech of the characters and the narrator in the short story A Temporary Matter. Bhabha in The Location of Culture (1994) discusses hybridity in society during the post-colonial era and is applied to diaspora literature. Hybridity is related to human culture and identity. Culture and identity are formed dynamically, they experience development, progress, and decline according to conditions and circumstances. Diaspora literature is produced from the writings of people living outside the country and/or writings that contain diaspora experiences. In the process of hybridity, there is a gap between the two cultures. The gap is called liminality in which there is repression of the (colonial) past that is not revealed. One of the writers included into the category of diaspora writers is Jhumpa Lahiri. In A Temporary Matter, she shows the hybridity experienced by the two main characters of Indian descent living in the United States. They were husband and wife; Shukumar and Shoba. They experienced cultural adaptation to cultures outside India. In their lives, cultural mixing occurs. This mixture is seen in the food, clothing, and language they use. Between these mixtures, several gaps fill the transition. This is found in the main character's utterances.

Abstract

This study examines political discrimination against women in the 2015 film entitled Suffragette using Simone De Beauvoir's theory of feminism. The movie tells the story of British women fighting for their rights during the 20th century. The study's methodology, which used qualitative research techniques, was feminism-focused. In the book The Second Sex, the researcher applied Simone De Beauvoir's feminist theory. This study has three goals. The first is to identify the factors that contribute to political discrimination. Secondly, to learn how political prejudice is reflected, and thirdly, to learn how political discrimination is portrayed in suffragette movies. The researcher draws the conclusion that there are three factors contributing to the political discrimination in the movie: societal stigma, the main subject, and government policy. Political discrimination is depicted in the movie in five different contexts: the parliament, the job, the home, the prison, and women's opinions. Both internal and exterior effects of political discrimination are depicted in the movie. Keywords : Political Discrimination, Suffragette, Feminism, Maud Watts

Abstract

This study is more focused on enhancing the accuracy of subject-verb agreement/ conjugation, by employing the mood analysis and self-correction techniques. The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of mood analysis and self-correction practices to enhance EFL students’ conjugation accuracy. This research is an experimental study in a classroom context, which was carried out in the English Department of Stikubank University (UNISBANK) Semarang. Fifteen students played a role in an experimental group while fifteen others played a role in a control group. During the treatment, the experimental group did mood analysis and self-correction while the control group did not. The t-test calculation shows that there is a significant difference between the conjugation accuracy of the text written by the experimental group and that written by the control group. The experimental group outperformed the control group. The research findings indicate that mood analysis and self-correction practices are effective to enhance EFL students’ conjugation accuracy. Thus, it is recommended that practices of mood analysis and self-correction be applied in a teaching grammar lesson.

Abstract

This study aims to portray how students reflect their learning process in a creative writing course through their poems. Forty-seven students of an English Literature Department in a private university in Semarang participated in this study. The course mainly covered the short story and poetry writing. Poetry writing was started in the second half of the semester. In this study, the students were required to write a learning reflection to look back at the process they had been through. Employing Hanauer’s meaningful literacy concept (2012), the researchers analyzed how students reflected their learning process in their poems. It is argued that language learning should enable students to use language in a way that is more meaningful and relevant to their personal experiences. In terms of reflection, it is believed that by deliberately looking back at their learning process students can objectively evaluate, understand and make sense of their journey. This study found four major themes in the students’ reflective poems namely altered perspective, students’ struggle, increased self-assurance, and students’ future expectations. In conclusion, language learning should embrace meaningful literacy in which students should be allowed to deliver their personal and meaningful expressions, in this case by writing poetry.
