Abstract

This study aims to see the framing carried out by the online media Kompas.com and Detik.com against the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia, Yaqut Cholil. This study uses a qualitative research approach. Thus, this study looks at the meaning of individual or group problems in human life. This study uses Robert Entman's analytical model to identify Kompas.com and Detik.com framing. data collection is done by making observations via the internet. The researcher saw news about the Minister of Religion in the period of June and July. After making observations, the researchers collected and documented the data from the observations. The researcher then selected news relevant to the Minister of Religion and the handling of the Covid-19 virus in Indonesia. The next researcher analyzed the relevant news using Robert Entman's framing analysis model. The results of this study indicate that Kompas.com frames the Minister of Religion as a person who has the capacity to invite all religious leaders and major mass organizations to participate in preventing the transmission of COVID-19. The Minister of Religion is also framed as a person who has the power to make relevant regulations to prevent the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, Detik.com frames the Minister of Religion to be more concerned with technical matters, such as meat distribution and slaughtering sacrificial meat. It does not appear that the Minister of Religion has the power to make substantial policies. The power of the Minister of Religion is shown to be limited to technical prohibitions. The analysis of Entman's model is not sufficient to explain the reality of media holistically. Not all news provides moral judgment and problem solving. This limitation makes this study need other analytical tools to explain the phenomenon, although it is not very well established. Further in-depth research with other analytical tools is needed to get a more comprehensive picture of framing.

Abstract

This study aims to look at the framing carried out by the online media CNN Indonesia.com and Detik.com on the corruption case of the Governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe. This study uses a qualitative research. Thus, this study looks at the meaning of individual or group problems in human life. This study uses Robert Entman's analysis model to identify the framing of CNN Indonesia.com and Detik.com. Data collection was carried out by observing through online media. Researchers saw news about Lukas Enembe in the November period. The researcher then selected news that was relevant to the development of the Lukas Enembe corruption case. The results of this study indicate that CNN Indonesia.com framed the chairman of the KPK, Firli Bahuri, for violating law enforcement ethical standards. Firli Bahuri is also framed as a figure who gave privileges for the corruption suspect meanwhile he has never done it before. Meanwhile, Detik.com's framing of Firli Bahuri has violated the ethical standards of law enforcement. The portion of the news about Lukas Enembe and how his status and health condition is less than the circumstance of the meeting with Firli Bahuri. Detik.com also did not show the information provided by the KPK regarding Firli Bahuri's involvement in the meeting. Entman's model analysis is not sufficient to explain media reality comprehensively. Not all news offers moral choices and problem solved. Due to these limitations, this study requires other analytical tools to explain this phenomenon. A more in-depth investigation with other analytical tools is needed to get a more complete picture in terms of framing. Keywords: Framing, Firli Bahuri, KPK, Lukas Enembe.

Abstract

Memes as an entertainment media have become a way to communicate with people of this era as a way to deliver a message or to retell the events of today or the past. The Among Us is one amongst many memes existed on the internet, once starting of as a small community exclusive to enthusiasts to something that ordinary people can enjoy whether it is from things that relate to them as of playing the game or something sensational that spreads into everyday objects, thus created subgenre “Among Us Look Alike”. The method chosen for this research is descriptive qualitative with an addition of parts needed to construct the meme. The researcher uses Roland Barthes’ theory to analyze the data. The researcher also explained the Denotative and Connotative meaning in the Among Us Look Alike meme. The researchers selected two memes for this analysis in Among Us memes based on the appearance of the Among Us character in the image. The result show that the Denotative meaning of the data are what to be expected from the object itself, and Connotative meaning of the data are varied and explained deeper into the context, such as the first data explaining the office culture and speculate on where the image is happening to how the image with the context presented to be in an office culture preceded the Among Us games by few months and the second data explaining the post-apocalyptic event and how the trace of Among Us character survived due to its material and how it shares the same material as the currency of the post-apocalyptic zone of “Fallout” game. The data showed that the images have both Denotative which is the literal description of the object and Connotative which range from just knowing the basic context of the meme, which is to know what parts needed to manifest the figure into deeper subjective meaning of the image.

Abstract

This research explores how the movie Mean Girls (2004) reflects the social structure of post-9/11 America using intertextual irony and stereotypes. Following the 9/11 attacks, American society experienced significant cultural and social shifts that influenced various media, including movies. This study analyzes how the film critiques social hierarchies and collective trauma while examining power dynamics and identity struggles in the context of high school as a microcosm of broader social tensions. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a literary sociology approach. The analysis draws on Julia Kristeva's intertextuality theory and Stuart Hall's stereotype theory to examine the interplay between the film's narrative elements and the sociocultural changes after 9/11. Primary data includes scenes and dialogues from the film, while secondary data comprises academic articles and news reports discussing the societal impacts of the tragedy. The findings reveal that the film employs intertextual irony to critique social exclusivity, power struggles, and the reinforcement of stereotypes. It also highlights the pressures of conformity and the challenges faced by marginalized identities. The study underscores the role of media in reflecting societal tensions and facilitating critical discourse on historical and cultural transformations. This research contributes to the academic understanding of popular culture by demonstrating how films like Mean Girls serve as both entertainment and a medium for social critique, particularly in addressing adolescent behavior and social dynamics within a historical context.

Abstract

The present study examined the use of hyperbolic expressions in a text-based virtual communication context, specifically in an Indonesian newly mothers’ online chat room. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method to analyze 60 utterances containing hyperbolic expressions taken from the Mom Sharing WhatsApp group. Simak and catat methods were implemented to observe and take notes on the hyperbolic expressions used by the mothers identified based on McCarthy & Carter’s (2004) characterization. The collected data were then categorized into 7 forms of hyperbole proposed by Claridge (2010), and the possible functions behind the use of this figurative language were analyzed qualitatively based on the overall contexts. Results reveal that 6 forms of hyperbole were used in the chat room, namely single-word hyperbole, phrasal hyperbole, clausal hyperbole, numerical hyperbole, the role of superlative, and comparison. Furthermore, the expressions were found to serve various functions, namely to express emotions, to concretize the message and evoke imagination, to create humour, and to establish group identity. These findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on the use of hyperbole in everyday communication.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explore how students' psychological needs, namely autonomy, competence, and relatedness, can be met or hindered in using the CANDIL (Maca Dina Digital Library) application, using the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) approach. The method used is qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The results showed that the autonomy aspect tends to be fulfilled even though it is limited by the variety of collections, the competence aspect is still constrained by features that -are confusing for some students who use the CANDIL. It can also be seen that the relatedness aspect is still not maximized due to the lack of interaction space between users. In conclusion, although the CANDIL application has provided easy access and some support for reading interest for students using the CANDIL, the fulfillment of the three psychological needs has not been maximized. This shows that strategies to increase interest in reading in the digital era do not simply rely on adequate technology, but must also consider psychological or motivational factors that can affect the experience and increase interest in reading for users.
