Abstract

This article attempts to historically analyse the emergence of transnational jihadist movements in Indonesia, focusing on Jamaah Islamiyyah (JI), which is allegedly responsible for a number of terror attacks in South East Asia.  The article discusses the historical background of the emergence of Jamaah  Islamiyyah and its current development. It is argued that the Afghan battle-field was an important event and locus for Indonesian jihadits groups to exercise their military capabilities, establish secure bases and subsequently pave the emergence of the transnational jihadist. Through informal networks and joint operations, Jamaah Islamiyyah has become the hub for jihadist movements  in Southeast Asia. It was the political opportunity of the reformation which gave way to the public appearance of Jamaah Islamiyyah as the MMI demonstrated, but it also brought the consequence of a split among JI activists.  The split reappears when the MMI was becoming involved in politics, and the resignation of Ba’asyir from the top position of the MMI in 2008 exemplifies  the turning point to the ideological foundation of JI as the Pedoman Umum Perjuangan Jamaah Islamiyyah (PUPJI) prescribed.

Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the arts of governing Islam in Indonesia, a majority Muslim country, which is neither secular nor Islamic. It tries to explain how the premise of governmentality is modelled into the state structure and politics. Rather than seeing Islamophobia as a cultural practice, the article argues that Islamophobia develops partly because of power relations between the ruler and the ruled, or as I call it “regimented Islamophobia”. It is the fear of “Islamic threats” – whether real or imagined – that is deemed as a potent challenge to regimes’ power and authority. While the notion of majority-minority relation remains essential to analyse the forms of Islamophobia, this article offers a new insight of how political regimes exercise “governmentality practices” or the arts of governing Islam and controlling Muslim aspirations. This practice of governmentality is a key strategy to pacify Islam during the colonial and post-colonial Indonesia. As far as Indonesian political history is concerned, this governmentality practice is old wine in a new bottle; it is the technique Dutch colonial government and the regimes following the Indonesian independence have exercised for subjugating Islam and controlling aspirations of its believers.

Abstract

This article is a result of a massive survey conducted in Tulungagung, a south-eastern Javanese middle town in the early 2022. The survey involves 2569 data collectors that successfully, following a series of data cleansing, reported refined 7140 data survey. The article is a descriptive analytic which shows the views of respondents of the survey. They are leaders in many Javanese villages in the city which include religious leaders (RL), leaders of community (LC), and young leaders (YL). The survey addresses four important issues that have been officially recognised as the official four pillars of religious moderation (moderasi beragama), namely commitment for Indonesian nationalism, tolerance, anti-violence, acceptance to local cultures. The survey finds that there has been no worrying indicator threatening the four pillars of moderasi beragama and argues that a challenge for religious pluralism in contemporary Java lies at the coexistence between groups within the same religion. It also suggests that “moderating the moderate” has been a key challenge for the state’s initiative of moderasi beragama, otherwise the project becomes obsolete.

Abstract

In a competitive business world, price and product quality are two important factors that influence purchasing decisions. This study was conducted to determine the effect of price and product quality on consumer purchasing decisions at CV. Merpati Sejahtera Kediri. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method, where data is obtained by distributing questionnaires to consumers of krecek krupuk CV. Merpati Sejahtera totaling 30 respondents. The analysis technique used is multiple linier regression to test the effect between independent variables (price and product quality) on the dependent variable (purchase decisions). The results of this study indicate that both price and product quality have a positive and significant effect on consumer purchasing decisions, both partially and simultaneously. These findings indicate that competitive pricing strategies and improving product quality can be important factors in driving purchasing decisions.

Abstract

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology, particularly in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), has opened up new opportunities for Islamic da'wah strategies in the contemporary era. This article explores how the utilization of AI can be a tool to deliver da'wah messages in a broader, personalized, and adaptive manner, as well as the challenges that arise. This study uses a qualitative research method with a desk research approach. The findings suggest that contemporary da'wah strategies incorporating AI can accelerate the spread of Islamic information by integrating AI into da'wah practices. This enables a more contextualized and interactive approach. However, proper ethical and regulatory considerations are essential to ensure that AI-assisted da'wah remains aligned with Islamic values. The implementation of AI in da'wah also faces several challenges, including low digital literacy among preachers and the potential spread of unverified Islamic information that lacks scientific authority. This article recommends strengthening digital literacy among preachers and encouraging collaboration between technology experts and clerics to develop a sustainable AI-based preaching ecosystem.
