Abstract

Abstract

River water quality is vital to life, but anthropogenic activities have caused significant degradation, threatening aquatic ecosystems and clean water supplies. Although bioindicators have long been used to monitor river health, there has been no bibliometric review to analyze trends and research gaps in this field. Previous studies have mostly focused on specific species or physical-chemical parameters, but have not yet fully integrated an ecosystem indicator approach. Therefore, this study aims to address this gap by conducting a bibliometric analysis of publications on animals as bioindicators of river water quality. The method used is a bibliometric review using data from the Scopus database (2020–2024), analyzed using VOSviewer to visualize the co-occurrence of keywords, as well as a descriptive analysis of publication trends, journals, and fields of study. The results show a significant increase in publications since 2020, with Ecological Indicators and Science of the Total Environment as the leading journals, and Environmental Science as the dominant field of study. Co-occurrence analysis identified three main research clusters: ecology and communities, physiological responses to pollutants, and heavy metal contamination. These findings indicate that global research focus is concentrated on the impact of heavy metal pollutants, while the issues of microplastics and climate change on bioindicators are relatively less explored. This clustering pattern also emphasizes the importance of combining ecological, physiological, and pollution-related approaches, reflecting interdisciplinary advances in this area. In conclusion, the use of animals as bioindicators has a strong theoretical basis and offers an integrated approach to water management such as river. Future studies focusing on developing more sensitive bioassay methods and conducting long-term toxicity analyses are important, but they must also incorporate molecular tools such as eDNA and metabolomics to strengthen biomonitoring systems. In addition, decision makers are encouraged to implement bioindicators that use animals in water quality monitoring systems in order to improve early detection capabilities for river ecosystem degradation.

Abstract

Traditional food processing practices often contain implicit scientific knowledge that can be systematically analyzed and explained using modern science. This study examines the scientific knowledge embedded in the traditional preparation of Wadi, a fermented fish product of the Dayak and Banjar communities. The research aims to identify and describe forms of scientific knowledge represented in each stage of the Wadi-making process. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using documentation analysis. Data were collected from selected written and visual sources that clearly describe the stages of Wadi production. The data were analyzed by mapping traditional practices to scientific concepts in food science. The results indicate that the preparation of Wadi embodies multiple forms of scientific knowledge, including osmosis in the salting process, salt-based preservation through microbial inhibition, lactic acid fermentation, moisture control, and biochemical transformations such as protein hydrolysis. These findings demonstrate that traditional culinary practices are not merely cultural activities but also reflect systematic scientific knowledge consistent with principles of microbiology, biochemistry, and food preservation. In conclusion, the scientific knowledge identified in the making of Wadi has strong potential to support contextual and culturally relevant science learning by connecting everyday practices with formal scientific concepts.

Abstract

Abstract. Scientific literacy plays a crucial role in enabling students to understand, evaluate, and respond to scientific issues that affect society. However, findings from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) indicate that the scientific literacy level of Indonesian students remains relatively low. This study aimed to investigate the improvement of students’ scientific literacy through the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) oriented toward Socioscientific Issues (SSI) in the topic of Environmental Change. This research employed a descriptive quantitative method with a pre-experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. A MANOVA test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating that the SSI-based PBL model significantly enhanced students’ scientific literacy. These findings demonstrate that SSI-oriented PBL is effective in improving scientific literacy while fostering students’ awareness of the importance of protecting the environment from the negative impacts of environmental change.

Abstract

Environmental challenges such as ecosystem degradation, biodiversity loss, and pollution have become major threats to sustainability worldwide. Despite the growing importance of environmental literacy for achieving sustainability goals, limited studies have examined the environmental literacy of prospective biology teachers, particularly within wetland ecosystem contexts. This study aimed to assess the environmental literacy of biology education students and explore its contribution to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through sustainability oriented education. This research employed a convergent mixed methods approach involving 58 biology education students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews and analyzed through descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings revealed high levels of environmental knowledge, awareness, and conservation attitudes among students, whereas pro-environmental behavior remained at a moderate level, indicating a gap between environmental understanding and actual practice. Students also demonstrated strong awareness of the importance of conserving wetland ecosystems and recognized the role of education in promoting sustainability. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening environmental literacy among prospective biology teachers to support SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land) through sustainability oriented education.
