Abstract

Dentures are expected to restore masticatory function, which is an indicator of the functional complex of mastication influenced by elevator muscle activation from craniomandibular biomechanics. The level of bite force is important to determine the effec-tiveness of mastication in denture-using patients. This study evaluated the differences in maximal bite force values and mastica-cation ability in metal and acrylic partial denture patients. Subjects were RPD users; 12 metal frame patients and 12 acrylic pa-tients. The bite force values the patients were measured using a byte gauge. Mastication ability was assessed using a mastica-cation ability questionnaire. The age groups of 46-55 years and 56-65 years used the RPD the most. The mean maximal bite force of metal-frame RPD patients was 260.92 N and 90.67 N in acrylic. All of the metal frame users had good mastication ability and only 5% of acrylic RPD users had good ability. Only 66.7% of metal frame RPD patients had a high quality of life and 8.3% of acrylic. It was concluded that the maximal bite force value of metal frame RPD patients was greater than acrylic.

Abstract

Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a slow-growing benign tumour derived from undifferentiated cells of the periodontal ligament. The seg-mental resection surgical procedure involving the maxilla in tumour removal surgery causes oronasal defects in breathing, swal-lowing and phonetics, in addition to the patient's psychological state. Rehabilitation of the defect using an obturator prosthesis allows the patient to regain the affected functions. An obturator prosthesis is a plate that closes an intraoral defect and can be clas-sified into surgical, interim and definitive obturators. This article reported the prosthetic rehabilitation of a post-hemaxillectomy defect in an OF patient in stages. A 19-year-old female was referred to the Prosthodontics Clinic of the Oral Surgery Clinic for the fabrication of a surgical obturator that was placed immediately post-hemaxillectomy. After three months, the patient was rehabilita-ted with an interim obturator. Final rehabilitation was done seven months later with a definitive metal-framed obturator to restore chewing, breathing, phonetic and aesthetic functions which resulted in improved quality of life for the patient post-hemaxillectomy.

Abstract

Socket preservation is a procedure in the tooth socket by inserting graft material so as to reduce bone and soft tissue loss after tooth extraction. Gold sea cucumber (S.hermanii) extract has been widely studied because it contains many bioactive compo-nents that can accelerate the post-extraction ossification process. Gold sea cucumber extract was made into gel preparations with concentrations of 0.8%, 1.6%, and 3.2%. The experimental animals were randomly divided into 4 groups. Immunohistoche-mical observation to see the increase in RANK-L expression after gel administration on day 14 after tooth extraction of guinea pigs. The mean levels of osteoclasts and RANKL were highest in the control group and lowest in the 3.2% group. The results of the one-way Anova test showed that there were significant differences between the four treatment groups (p<0.05). It was con-cluded that the administration of golden sea cucumber gel extract had an effect on the bone socket formation process. The most effective concentration of 3.2% was used in the process of socket bone formation.

Abstract

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a common congenital defect of the craniofacial region. Presurgical nasoalveolar moulding (PNAM), which reshapes the alveolar and nasal segments before surgical repair, is an orthopaedic plate that can passively reposition the alveolar segment and nasal cartilage before surgical repair. PNAM with nasal stent has the advantages of correcting immature nasal cartilages and maintaining a normal position. This article describes the stages and results of pre-surgical treatment of an infant with PNAM with a single nasal stent of a complete unilateral CLP infant sinistra. A 7-day-old male infant with unilateral complete labiognatopalatoschizis sinistra was treated using a PNAM nasal stent design to form nasal cartilage. The premaxilla-ry position was corrected by making periodic adjustments to the anatomical surface of the PNAM. The gap was narrowed so that the premaxillary position was improved, and the nasal morphology was more symmetrical between the cleft and non-cleft sides. It is concluded that pre-surgical treatment with PNAM creation with a single nasal stent in complete unilateral CLP infants can correct the premaxillary position and narrow the gap before labioplasty.

Abstract

Rehabilitation of patients with eyeball loss requires an eye prosthesis. Currently, a variation of the non-fabricated eye prosthe-sis, the light-weight prosthesis, has been developed. This article describes the technique of making a light-weight eye prosthe-thesis for a patient who lost his right eyeball due to trauma. A 28-year-old man came to Hasannudin University Dental and Oral Hospital complaining of losing his right eye due to trauma from a work accident. The patient was fitted with an eye prosthesis and used up to 9 months post-operatively. The patient felt uncomfortable because his prosthetic eye looked unnatural and looked smaller. The patient wanted a new prosthesis that was more comfortable to restore his confidence. The conjunctiva of the orbita was healthy and there was no infection. The patient was fitted with a non-fabricated light-weight eye prosthesis made from acry-lic resin. The artificial eye was fabricated with a precise impression method which gave an advantage in terms of retention. It was concluded that a light-weight eye prosthesis can be selected as a rehabilitative treatment for patients with eyeball loss that res-tores the patient's appearance and improves self-confidence.

Abstract

Tooth loss and the use of ill-fitting dentures can cause alveolar bone resorption especially in the mandible. This condition compli-cates the fabrication of a removable denture. Suction denture (SD) is an alternative to improve retention and stable support so that the denture can be used for chewing and swallowing. This article discusses the management of flat ridge condition using SD. A 70-year-old woman came to RSGM Hasanuddin University Makassar complaining of difficulty chewing due to the loss of all her teeth. The treatment chosen was SD with neutral zone impression on the lower jaw. It was concluded that SD can cli-nically improve retention and satisfaction, especially in patients with large alveolar bone resorption.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the caries risk profile using the caries risk assessment (CRA) method in children aged 6-8 years in Gowa district with a lower middle economic background. A total of 67 children participated in this study, with a distribution bet-ween male gender 24 people and female gender 43 people. CRA showed that 13.43% of children were in the low risk category, 29.85% moderate risk, and 56.72% high risk. The main risk factors that contribute to increased caries risk include frequency of consumption of sweet foods, lack of fluoride use, poor oral hygiene, and low socioeconomic status. Caries prevalence showed a positive relationship with risk category, where in the high-risk group, 70% of children had at least one tooth with active caries. These results emphasize the importance of risk-based interventions through dental health education programs, increasing access to fluoride, and other caries prevention strategies, especially in groups of children with low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Abstract

Introduction: Denture users with smoking habit often complain about colour changes in their dentures, especially on the base part. Polyamide microcrystalline is a thermoplastic denture base material and does not undergo many colour changes. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of filter cigarettes smoke exposure on the colour of polyamide microcrystalline materials. Methods: This study used posttest only control group design — Plate-Shaped sample with a size of 2 x 2 x 0.5 cm3. Nine samples as controls were immersed without exposure to the cigarette smoke, and 9 samples were immersed in artificial saliva with exposure to the filter cigarette smoke by six cycles, where one cycle was in the form of smoke exposure from one cigarette at 30-minute intervals. Cigarette exposure lasts for 21 days using a smoking simulation tool. Every seven days of exposure, colours were evaluated using a DSLR camera. The photos were then analysed with Adobe™ Photoshop in the CIELab colour space. The results were analysed afterwards by a one-way ANOVA variant test, and advance difference tests were analysed using a Post-Hoc test. Results: There was a significant colour change after exposure (p < 0.05), but the control group did not experience discolouration. The highest rate of colour change occurred in the second week, while in the third week the colour changes still occurred but tend to be stable. Conclusion: Exposure to the filter cigarette smoke changes the colour of polyamide microcrystalline denture base. Keywords: Polyamide microcrystalline, filter cigarette smoke, discolouration, denture base

Abstract

Severe alveolar bone resorption is a challenge in the fabrication of complete dentures. Loss of all teeth often leads to impaired masticatory function, which can affect the digestive system and nutritional intake. The close mouth moulding technique is sug-gested to overcome the limitations of conventional techniques in flat ridge cases, in order to obtain a denture that is firm and comfortable to use, especially when chewing. This article describes the treatment of a flat ridge case in a patient with digestive and nutritional disorders, using the close mouth moulding technique. A 65-year-old woman came to RSGMP Unhas with com-plaints of loose dentures making it difficult to chew, and even had to undergo hospitalisation due to complaints of heartburn so that it was recommended to use a denture by an internal medicine doctor. The patient wanted to make a denture that was firm, comfortable, and improved his appearance. The patient was made an acrylic CD with a close mouth moulding technique. It was concluded that the close mouth moulding technique was effective in producing CDs that were firm, stable, and could restore masticatory function in patients with flat ridge.
