Abstract

In the field of restorative dentistry, dental implants are very popular. There are two options for implant permanent crown restora-tion, screwed or cemented. Bone loss around the implant that occurs after one year of prostheses placement is one of the indica-tors for assessing treatment success. This article examines the marginal bone loss rates of both types of implant-supported pros-theses by collecting several internet-based literatures using the keywords marginal bone loss of implant screwed and implant ce-mented. The rate of bone loss is one of the assessments of the success of edentulous treatment using implants. There are seve-ral factors that impact bone loss around the implant. In screw implant prostheses marginal bone loss can be greater due to greater non-axial transfer of occlusal load and can be exacerbated if the implant is placed in an area that received a bone graft. It was concluded that greater marginal bone loss occurs with screw implant prostheses, but in terms of strength, screw implant pros-theses are better than cementation implant prostheses.

Abstract

AbstractIntroduction: The maintenance of dentures is an important aspect that varies within communities. According to the 2018 Riskesdas, the prevalence of edentulism in Indonesia shows a rate of 0.9% in urban areas and 1.7% in rural areas. The high rate of edentulism in Polejiwa Village, Malangke Barat District, Luwu Utara, indicates a significant number of complete denture users who often do not receive maintenance instructions from their dentists. This study aims to analyze the maintenance behaviors and cleanliness levels of acrylic dentures among the residents of Village. Methods: TAn analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design was used, involving purposive sampling to select denture users who had their dentures made by a dentist. Data were collected through a questionnaire and cleanliness examinations using the Hoad-Reddick index, which were then analyzed using the Chi-Square test to assess the relationship between maintenance behaviors and cleanliness levels. Results: The study results indicate that 10% of maxillary dentures were classified as clean, while 46.7% were dirty and 43.3% were very dirty. For mandibular dentures, 13.3% were clean, 40% were dirty, and 46.7% were very dirty. The Chi-Square test indicates a significant effect (p-value < 0.05) between maintenance behavior, specifically the frequency of cleaning dentures, and the level of denture cleanliness, with a p-value of 0.001 for the upper jaw and a p-value of 0.000 for the lower jaw. Conclusion:  The cleanliness level of acrylic-based dentures in the community of Polejiwa Village is still classified as poor. A significant association was found between the frequency of denture cleaning and the cleanliness levels of both upper and lower jaw dentures in the community of Polejiwa Village.KEYWORDS: Complete dentures, acrylic, hygiene maintenance behavior, denture cleanliness levelPerilaku tindakan pemeliharaan dan tingkat kebersihan gigi tiruan lengkap basis akrilik pada masyarakat desa: studi observasionalABSTRAKPendahuluan: Pemeliharaan gigi tiruan merupakan aspek penting yang berbeda-beda di setiap masyarakat. Abstract

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) is caused by disc dislocation, trauma, functional overload, and developmental abnormalities. One of the effectively used TMJ-OA treatments is dental stem cell secretome (DSECR); it has shown promising po-tential in cartilage regeneration. This review analyses DSECR as having the potential to halt or suppress the progression of TMJ-OA. It was concluded that treatment using DSECR promoted regeneration and repair of chemically induced TMJ-OA, indicating that DSECR has great potential to be a cell-free therapeutic approach.

Abstract

Dentures are expected to restore masticatory function, which is an indicator of the functional complex of mastication influenced by elevator muscle activation from craniomandibular biomechanics. The level of bite force is important to determine the effec-tiveness of mastication in denture-using patients. This study evaluated the differences in maximal bite force values and mastica-cation ability in metal and acrylic partial denture patients. Subjects were RPD users; 12 metal frame patients and 12 acrylic pa-tients. The bite force values the patients were measured using a byte gauge. Mastication ability was assessed using a mastica-cation ability questionnaire. The age groups of 46-55 years and 56-65 years used the RPD the most. The mean maximal bite force of metal-frame RPD patients was 260.92 N and 90.67 N in acrylic. All of the metal frame users had good mastication ability and only 5% of acrylic RPD users had good ability. Only 66.7% of metal frame RPD patients had a high quality of life and 8.3% of acrylic. It was concluded that the maximal bite force value of metal frame RPD patients was greater than acrylic.

Abstract

Socket preservation is a procedure in the tooth socket by inserting graft material so as to reduce bone and soft tissue loss after tooth extraction. Gold sea cucumber (S.hermanii) extract has been widely studied because it contains many bioactive compo-nents that can accelerate the post-extraction ossification process. Gold sea cucumber extract was made into gel preparations with concentrations of 0.8%, 1.6%, and 3.2%. The experimental animals were randomly divided into 4 groups. Immunohistoche-mical observation to see the increase in RANK-L expression after gel administration on day 14 after tooth extraction of guinea pigs. The mean levels of osteoclasts and RANKL were highest in the control group and lowest in the 3.2% group. The results of the one-way Anova test showed that there were significant differences between the four treatment groups (p<0.05). It was con-cluded that the administration of golden sea cucumber gel extract had an effect on the bone socket formation process. The most effective concentration of 3.2% was used in the process of socket bone formation.

Abstract

Tooth loss and the use of ill-fitting dentures can cause alveolar bone resorption especially in the mandible. This condition compli-cates the fabrication of a removable denture. Suction denture (SD) is an alternative to improve retention and stable support so that the denture can be used for chewing and swallowing. This article discusses the management of flat ridge condition using SD. A 70-year-old woman came to RSGM Hasanuddin University Makassar complaining of difficulty chewing due to the loss of all her teeth. The treatment chosen was SD with neutral zone impression on the lower jaw. It was concluded that SD can cli-nically improve retention and satisfaction, especially in patients with large alveolar bone resorption.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the caries risk profile using the caries risk assessment (CRA) method in children aged 6-8 years in Gowa district with a lower middle economic background. A total of 67 children participated in this study, with a distribution bet-ween male gender 24 people and female gender 43 people. CRA showed that 13.43% of children were in the low risk category, 29.85% moderate risk, and 56.72% high risk. The main risk factors that contribute to increased caries risk include frequency of consumption of sweet foods, lack of fluoride use, poor oral hygiene, and low socioeconomic status. Caries prevalence showed a positive relationship with risk category, where in the high-risk group, 70% of children had at least one tooth with active caries. These results emphasize the importance of risk-based interventions through dental health education programs, increasing access to fluoride, and other caries prevention strategies, especially in groups of children with low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Abstract

Introduction: Denture users with smoking habit often complain about colour changes in their dentures, especially on the base part. Polyamide microcrystalline is a thermoplastic denture base material and does not undergo many colour changes. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of filter cigarettes smoke exposure on the colour of polyamide microcrystalline materials. Methods: This study used posttest only control group design — Plate-Shaped sample with a size of 2 x 2 x 0.5 cm3. Nine samples as controls were immersed without exposure to the cigarette smoke, and 9 samples were immersed in artificial saliva with exposure to the filter cigarette smoke by six cycles, where one cycle was in the form of smoke exposure from one cigarette at 30-minute intervals. Cigarette exposure lasts for 21 days using a smoking simulation tool. Every seven days of exposure, colours were evaluated using a DSLR camera. The photos were then analysed with Adobe™ Photoshop in the CIELab colour space. The results were analysed afterwards by a one-way ANOVA variant test, and advance difference tests were analysed using a Post-Hoc test. Results: There was a significant colour change after exposure (p < 0.05), but the control group did not experience discolouration. The highest rate of colour change occurred in the second week, while in the third week the colour changes still occurred but tend to be stable. Conclusion: Exposure to the filter cigarette smoke changes the colour of polyamide microcrystalline denture base. Keywords: Polyamide microcrystalline, filter cigarette smoke, discolouration, denture base
