Abstract

In respect of the accuracy, one of the well-known techniques for human detection is the histogram-oriented gradients (HOG) method. Unfortunately, the HOG feature calculation is highly complex and computationally intensive. Thus, in this research, we aim to achieve a resource-efficient and low-power HOG hardware architecture while maintaining its high frame-rate performance for real-time processing. A hardware architecture for human detection in 2D images using simplified HOG algorithm was introduced in this paper. To increase the frame-rate, we simplify the HOG computation while maintaining the detection quality. In the hardware architecture, we design a cell-based processing method instead of a window-based method. Moreover, 64 parallel and pipeline architectures were used to increase the processing speed. Our pipeline architecture can significantly reduce memory bandwidth and avoid any external memory utilization. an altera field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) E2-115 was employed to evaluate the design. The evaluation results show that our design achieves performance up to 86.51 frame rate per second (Fps) with a relatively low operating frequency (27 MHz). It consumes 48,360 logic elements (LEs) and 4,363 registers. The performance test results reveal that the proposed solution exhibits a trade-off between Fps, clock frequency, the use of registers, and Fps-to-clock ratio.

Abstract

This paper presents a webserver for Indonesian fishermen, to support fishing activities. This is one of the sub-systems of e-Nelayan (in English: eFisherman) architecture, which was connected to e-Nelayan Apps; it helps to provide interaction between two users, including the administrators and fishermen. Using hypertext preprocessor (PHP) language, the website was developed to function on an Apache web server, with the adaptation of my structured query language (MySQL) framework for the database. This system was subsequently divided into two parts: (1) the front-end, which is responsible for the accessibility of data collection and (2) the back-end, where administrators update or modify crucial information: price, fishing result, illegal activity report, save our ship! (SOS) potential fish zone, and ship tracking. The administrators are unable to update the real-time weather information for the front-end part. The application was found to record the information obtained from the fishermen through the e-Nelayan apps and meteorology, climatology, and geophysical agency (BMKG in Indonesian). This web system is expected to carry out the following functions: to ensure easier interactions between fishermen and administrators, to enable easy update of information, to promote monitoring and recording of results, and to ensure fishermen’s safety.

Abstract

Analog Front-End (AFE) is a part of physical layer (PHY) at Visible Light Communications (VLC) system which has important things to transmit and receive the data. This research is a preliminary study in designing AFE transceiver which consists of LED driver and Trans-impedance Amplifier (TIA). The results are used as advanced reference design of AFE system and also to determine the modulations range (analog as well as digital). The design verification is based on data transmission which generated by signal generator. Square wave signal is used as digital modulation representative, and sinusoid signal as analog modulation representatitive. The range of VLC channels is about 50 cm with 0o angle. The result shows that digital modulation bandwidth is about 1 KHz to 10 KHz frequency, and analog modulation bandwidth is from 200 KHz to 600 KHz. We also find a significant impact by adding 1 pF capacitor to reduce noise gain. Furthermore, color filter testing is performed to investigate the design performance.

Abstract

Abstract

Small to large-scale companies mostly have warehouses to store their inventories, and to manage them a warehouse management system is required. A low cost, yet powerful solution is using a portable RFID reader. In RFID portable reader system, there are three components which are the most essential, i.e. host and its firmware, RF module, and battery.. In this paper, we propose a custom firmware design, which is compatible with different RFID reader chips or development boards. The custom firmware is designed to work by triggering the execution of Electronic Product Code (EPC) Generation 2 protocol standard command on the reader chip. Hence, the firmware can fully utilize the reader chip’s command. Furthermore, a lightweight battery system is also designed. Targeting for a high mobility use, a very lightweight Li-Pro battery, weighing of only 0.1 kg, is used for the battery system. It is also able to work at long operating hour up to 4 hours.

Abstract

In this paper, the design of AXI4-Stream based modulator IP core for Visible Light Communication is reported. The modulator IP core conforms to the AXI4-Stream protocol standard, which is widely used in System-on-Chip (SoC) design. There are three modulation types in this IP core namely, Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK), Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK), and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation-16 (QAM-16). These modulation types are commonly used in the DCO-OFDM system. The modulation types can be selected programmatically from software that runs in the main processor by accessing the control register. The output of the modulator is designed for DCO-OFDM modulation using 64-point IFFT. According to the simulation results, this modulator IP core can achieve a throughput of 95.36 Mb/s, 184.77 Mb/s, and 347.81 Mb/s for BPSK, QPSK, and QAM-16, respectively. This modulator IP core is reusable in the DCO-OFDM system, so it increases productivity in DCO-OFDM system design.

Abstract

Design, implementation, and its evaluation of visible light communication (VLC) using 1-PWM is discussed clearly in this paper. The designed system consists of two main blocks: VLC Coordinator that cover DSP and AFE transmitter whereas the VLC client covers the DSP and AFE receiver. The Microcontroller STM32F4 board is employed as DSP device in this project, both for coordinator- and client-side. The VLC demo shows that real-time texts streaming with 10 kb of packet size can be performed well. Our VLC system can be used optimally in 50 to 70 cm of optical channel distance with 0 degrees. In other hands, the maximum bit-rate of this VLC system is limited to 3.3 kbps.

Abstract

The variation in the k-factor value significantly influences the performance of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air-to-ground point-to-point line of sight (A2G PTP LOS) communications over a Rician channel at 1,800 MHz using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) techniques. The research emphasizes the impact of the k-factor, which quantifies the dominance of the line-of-sight component over multipath scattering. The variation in the k-factor significantly influences UAV A2G PTP LOS communication performance for the empirical model (EM), as it involves precise measurements of the received power level in dBm from UAV to ground control station (GCS) across varying distances and altitudes. We introduce a method to compute the k-factor by assessing the ratio of the line-of-sight signal power to the multipath signal power, thereby enhancing channel modeling accuracy. Empirical analysis shows a strong correlation between bit error rate (BER) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with differing k-factor values; a higher k-factor of 16.3 markedly improves performance, virtually eliminating errors at a 10 dB SNR, while a lower k-factor of 2.39 still shows significant errors at a 30 dB SNR. These results highlight the necessity of optimizing the k-factor in UAV A2G PTP LOS systems to ensure stable and reliable communication under diverse operational conditions.
